Jason Momoa is looking more and more and more like Conan every shot I see. I can only hope the writing is up to the level of the casting.

Does Conan really need much writing?

Of course it needs writing. Maybe not as much as say AVATAR but it still needs it. I just hope its not the trend of CGI everything, make it flashy and go low on the rest of the movie.

It depends on what Howard books they're using, Cracker. A lot of them could be done without ever having to resort to CGI or even special effects.

Silly boy, this is modern Hollywood. You should be lucky if anyone has read one of the books let alone base a plot around one.

Corrected your typo.

Most fo this stuff has been done to death. We have to remember the original started the whole fantasy leather barbarian thing. To even get close to the original movie it needs:
Teutonic theme
Teutonic music
Real plot
Excellent action scenes
Something new

These pics do not bode well and look more like Xena than James Earl Jones.

I don't want it to be close to the original movie, honestly. The movie was kinda silly.

I want it to be more like Howard's books, starting around "The Frost Giant's Daughter".

The first movie picked up like halfway through the original Howard series, which was a terrible place to start.

So how would that be different than Hercules/Xena? Most of the Conan books are short story type formats with him kicking some butt and thats kinda it.

They may be short story type formats, but they're also(for Howard's at least) pretty linear.

Starting with the massive invasion of the Gundermen's fort along the Cimmerian border, moving onto "The Frost Giant's Daughter"(when Conan first struck out on his own and fought alongside the Aesir/Vanir), etc would make for a good first movie. We'd see Conan going from a headstrong youth in a barbarian horde--to him becoming a hardened fighter when he was with the Aesir/Vanir.

Thats an interesting question now that I think about it. Has any fantasy slash movie since Conan made a profit? How many have there been?

Don't think there've been any movies with quite the same draw as Conan.

Off the top of my head, we've had:

Conan: The Destroyer (a farce)
Red Sonja (also pretty ridiculous though with a cult following)
Beastmaster
Scorpion King (to a lesser extent)
Krull the Conqueror (Good Ole Kevin Sorbo fun)

None of them particularly memorable.

Not only that but they grossed a ton at the box office for a fantasy movie (or any movie for that matter).

I wouldn't exactly categorize Lord of the Rings in the same genre as the aforementioned movies.

Howard is BETTER than Tolkien, but they don't write the same style of fantasy stories.

Hell, Tolkien got some of his ideas from Robert E. Howard.

Dude does look like a pretty solid Conan figure from a visual standpoint. Looks like they got those oh-so-often-mentioned eyes about right, at least.

As for a plot, Conan plots are generally pretty simple:

1. Conan needs cash.
2. Joins group of some kind.
3. Everyone else killed in battle.
4. Encounters something weird.
5. Defeats weird thing.
6. Loots treasure hoard.
7. Booze, bitches, and blow.
8. Go back to Step 1.

I'm saying it doesn't translate as well (and yes I think Tolkein was better at least in comparison to Conan vs. LOTR). There's not enough storyline. In most of his stories, Conan just sort of exists. He's not saving the world or building a longer lasting light bulb.

I did particularly like Conan's journey to a thinly disguised Azteca. That was cool and I liked the "going to get my wife and you're ALL GOING TO DIE" type storyline. very macho. Vision of him in glass chains climbing a pyramid is epic cool.

Howard committed suicide shortly (a year?) after writing his Conan material. The stories, like all art, are the manifestation of their creator in a form of his choice. We get to see a barbarian battling these very real demons and fighting to survive how he wants to in a very savage way, which may well have been what gave Howard the mindset to liberate himself. Either way, to me there's a lot more going on And the old movie wasn't really based off a book, it was a mishmash of random stories and used a Kull villain. I actually have the old serial with Thulsa Doom that I picked up at a convention for 2 bucks. The guy at the stand didn't get why I was so stoked to find it

Jason Momoa is shaping up to be a pretty cool barbarian. He nailed the whole Noble Savage thing in Stargate Atlantis.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
