Hey Aja.
Just to let you know, this isn't the forum for this kind of thread. 40k General is.
That out the way:
I'd say orks.

I have both an Ork and 'Nid army, and I must say that I enjoy playing Orks more. It seems to me that they are much more versatile than the 'Nids. That being said, though, if you already have fantasy Orcs, you might want to go with something different.

Orks are cheaper, and still good. Tyranids are pretty fun though, and really unique to play.

Die hard Nid player here, and I have to agree with the majority and go with Orks. Much more forgiving army in the current edition for new players, and also a complete range of minis, where with Nid's you'll have to kitbash most of the useful stuff, or pay out the nose.
Love my lil' guys, but every time a new player pics up a box of gaunts I sigh quietly for them, for it's a long hard road to figuring out how to play em.

Both are great armies, but for the reasons mentioned in the above post (easier to play, no need to convert), I would say a new player is better off with orks.

As another Nid player who will probably never buy any other army, I would say orks are much easier to compete with and can be just as much fun to play.
As for sighing when people buy gaunts, maybe they're just bolstering their stockpile for a tervigon spam list.

They're more fun and more competitive. The new Tyranid codex didn't do Tyranid players much in the way of favors.

Orks, without a doubt. You can start them for wicked cheap with the Black Reach sets (especially getting them on eBay) and it's really hard to screw up with them in-game. Besides, if you like a model from another army, just remember: Orks can loot anything.

A little hypocritical that you complained about people on here saying Orks are a weak book (when they're not), and then turn around and say the exact same thing about Tyranids (when theyre not), dont you think?

No, not really, mainly because he didn't say it was a weak book. He said "The new Tyranid codex didn't do Tyranid players much in the way of favors." which can mean a multitude of different things.

OP - my friend was in the exact same predicament. Orks or Nids as his first returning army? (he played like 4 or 5 years ago, then Fantasy in between). He chose Nids and LOVES IT. He destroys almost anything that gets in his way (the "almost" being when he doesn't, he gets destroyed).
All i can say is don't listen to the elitists who say Nids suck (looking @ dashofpepper ). Just because a new player probably can't win w/ Nids doesn't mean Nids can't win at all.
If anything, I'd say first check around your FLGS. My first army was Necrons b/c I thought I'd add a unique flare or change things up a bit at my 2 FLGS. Little did i know there was already 4 Necron players in the area, so I wasn't as cool as I thought . See what your primary competition is. Which of the 2 do you think would be the most fun or competitive against the area's given competition? Nids can rape hard. Just gotta know how to use them. Orks are definitely easier to play for a new-comer, though, as previously stated.
Or...just get both

It should take a lot less time to get a decently painted 'nid army on the field. You’ll typically have at least as many ork boyz as you would gaunts, and an ork boy has a few more bits and pieces on him. Your light and medium vehicles and walkers will also take a lot of time relative to their cost. If you’re not that interested in painting, you can knock out a decent looking ‘nid army much sooner than an ork one.
Of course, if you love painting, then both can be made to look stunning. If you love converting, then no army compares to orks.
As other posters have said, an ork army is a lot more forgiving – lists tend to be full of redundancy, you should have a range of units capable of addressing different kinds of threats. Tyranid lists are dominated by a handful of extremely good units, some highly specialised units, and a mass of low cost nuisance troops. Both can be very effective when played well, but while a poorly played ork army may still give a decent showing, a poorly played ‘nid army will tend to get thumped a lot.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Ok I like converting, while I'm not a big fan of painting. So I should probably go with orks. Most of the armies I've seen at my FLGS are 'nids, space marines, and imperial guard.

Yes they are. However I specifically mentioned NEW players: aka those grabbing stuff for their first army. It has less to do with them picking up the gaunts and more to do with the learning curve the Nids have.

Ah, see I didn't even read into your post that way. Sorry 'bout that.
Yes, the learning curve for 'Nids is harsh. With the new codex in January, i felt like I was playing with a brand new army for the first time, only now am I really getting the push-and-shove of the new book. I placed 2nd in prelims for 'ard boyz with the bugs, and i'm hoping to give a good showing in the semi's.
All that being said, i am a fan of orks but i do not fear them on the tabletop. IG on the other hand...shudder...

Really? Honestly, I've never had too much trouble with the 'Guard, aside from the rare occasions when one of those pesky Medusa blasts manage to take out huge chunks of my units. The IG are solid and all, but I can usually thwart them with my Tau or Ork armies. That's the cool thing about 40k and other such games: what's tough for one player isn't necessarily so for another... and vice versa.

I play 'nids primarily.
My regular players are MEQs, and a couple ork players.
I see IG mainly at tournaments, which are ingrained with a time limit. Well as you can imagine, turns 1-3 heavily favor most guard players, whose guns have range to touch my army from the get go (whereas most of my stuff must slog across the board before being able to cause any havoc). Also guard turns take far longer than MEQ turns, so in a 2 hour time limit games typically end on turn 3.
Therefore, in tournaments, IG makes me shudder. It just sucks losing to time limits.

Go for Nids, they were my first army, and my best army I might add.. Nids will absolutly destroy everything if you play them right. Get bugs for your first army. In my opinion they are way more fun to play than orks. I love the watching faces on my friends when their vangaured vets are gone in the first turn to genestealers.
