Serious question, not trying to offend anyone. I have rarely gotten a chuckle from it, though it seems to be worshipped on some level by the internet. I was going to browse for an example of this, but the current strip more than meets my criteria:

Anyone help me out here? It seems most of the strips start off making some angry common-sense observation then one insults the other in a profane way. I've seen a similar comic that follows the angry rant formula...

Edit: Friendly reminder that Dakka doesn't allow pics with "bad words" to be posted, so if you're referencing a strip you might just link instead.

Just because it doesn't make you laugh doesn't mean it's not funny.

I don't read Penny Arcade though, so this is jsut an uninformed opinion.

Penny Arcade and comics like it are funny becuas ethey portray everyday occurances between friends that people can relate to. Everyone has been in this situation where you say something off the wall to a friend and he looks at you like your a rere. Its something you can relate to and by assosication makes you laugh. is what I meant. Didn't come out that way though.

Well that particular comic is stupid, but knowing the characters it's a bit funny. It's not the norm though as I find most that they do to be quite entertaining.

I'll admit I got a snicker from it, but that's mainly because of the comments you made about the comic.

It isn't always good, but when it's good, it's great. The Warhammer 40k one (you all know which one I mean) is amazing.

There's more than a few D&D ones which hit my referential humour buttons as well.

But just because someone else finds it entertaining doesn't justify its existence.

To be fair humour is so subjective to the individual that these kinda threads are kinda pointless.

Even all the Ctrl Alt Del hate is pointless, as he obviously makes enough from those who do find it funny to be quite comfortable.

Like what you like, don't need to hate stuff you don't get. Simples.

Ctrl alt Del can be funny, I do tend to check it every few days. Although I tend to find the sillies are more likely to make you laugh than the actual strip.

Gathering the Informations.

The sillies he does a lot of, because they don't take much time.

The actual comic he does on Mon, Wed, and Friday--since it actually takes a few days to do each one.
Penny Arcade has the same update schedule but no sillies.

That said, I just enjoy the comics for their shenanigans.

I find Penny Arcade funny. Like any professionals they have their good days and bad days but it is quite an achievement to crank out three strips a week like clockwork for 10 years or however long it is.

The particular example of Penny Arcade given only makes sense if you are familiar long term with the characters of the protagonists. Otherwise this example is just a bog standard crappy poo joke.

I don't find CTRL ALT DEL funny, which I think is because I don't relate to the characters as much. To me, the darker haired one is just a bit dull and the lighter haired one is just a jerk.

Out of interest, what are the web comics you find funny, Canerus_The_Unbearable? It would be interesting to find some common ground, such as The Order Of The Stick or Muertitos or something. It might give a clue as to what we are finding humourous in different cartoons.

Funny cartoons (IMO)
Penny Arcade
Muertitos
Gorgeous Princess Creamy Beamy
The Order Of The Stick
Alien Loves Predator
Dilbert
Exterminatus Now
Maxwell The Demon
TSOALR

Those are the ones I read or used to read on a regular basis because they made me laughs.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I'd like to echo Kilkrazy's points.

Usually, their strips tend to comment on video games/video game news. A lot of it (like the one you linked to) tends to be interactions between the two characters Gabe and Tycho, who are effectively personifications of PA's two creators. As Kilkrazy points out, it makes a lot more sense if you're familiar with the quirks of the two characters (and to a certain sense, the artist and writer).

With regard to Ctrl-Alt-Del, I think a lot of the problem people have with it is that it started off pretty much as a clone to Penny Arcade. 2 video-gamers who sit around and play video-games/comment about games/game industry as a whole. I think for that reason, a lot of people just branded it as a copy-cat comic that was riding off of the success of Penny Arcade, back in the day. To a certain extent, I think those were valid points back then. Over the years, though (as I follow both comics), there's been a definite distinction made between the two comics which makes the comments from the "haters" less valid. CAD is now distinctly a plot/character driven comic that follows the lives of the main characters. Penny Arcade (when focusing on the two characters) remains fairly existential, so to speak, in merely providing snapshots into conversations/thoughts of the Gabe and Tycho with no real development of the characters. They are what they are.

I just love Red Meat because it's both funny and disturbing at the same time.

Here's a little story about a dead clown:
