Here I just want to talk about people(mostly kids) who treat their models like nothing.

There are way too many people in this hobby who treat their models like a piece of plastic(although they are), they do not care about the essence of this hobby, or clearly don't see it.They don't paint their models(normal for most of us but...), they throw them around, they do all sorts of tortures to them. They spend their parents' money and they are just so freaking spoiled as they have 10k pt of junk.I think most kids does that, and I think mostly because they like the game so much more than the actually hobby(although they have lists that can be classified as garbage, and don't play the right way)

The most unforgetable esperience I had was last week. When this kid in GW just finished a game and was packing up.He had his casualty pile high up the shelves(I don't know why) and he asked me to bring it to him.He was polite enough to make me move, and as a gamer/modeller/painter I was very careful with his stuff the whole way. Then when it got to his hands he JUST DUMPED THE WHOLE PILE INTO A BACKPACK.I was enraged, I don't know why but I was, and turned away from him and pledge I will either table him badly later on to teach him a lesson, or ignore this person.

Anyone has any similar experience?

that's a bit of an overeaction...
when it really comes down it we're playing with plastic army men, we're not artists, we're not generals, we're not tacticians... so you have to realize that people might not take this game as (idk) the serious endevor you see it as. I do understand your point why pay so much for this game if all your going to do is glop on paint and huck them together in a box, but honestly everyone is entiled to play the game (keyword: GAME) in whatever way they see fit.

You love it you slags!

well, I have been gaming for 17 years. I Do consider them chess pieces. Very complex ones. But I respect the money and work I have invested in them and try to carry them with that in mind. and I certainly dont sling them around.

are you kidding me?!
at my LGS i treat my models like the amount of work I put into them 2-3 hours per pair of models and so I treat them like I would something very treasured of mine keep in mind im only 14
meanwhile some adult (as the stereo type as you say should be very mature about it) is dumping his models into his UPS store box 3-4 plastic to plastic models deep. If this is some kind of argument saying kids are all junk either deal or learn which ones SPECIFICLY do this im tired of hearing adults whine all day about how kids ruin the hobby or mistreat their models whatever learn to deal

im actually with you on this one. One time at the store i work at i saw a kid throwing his models into his cardboard box! He was actually trying to make baskets with his marines! I really dont think he deserves to play because he is so spoiled and his parents buy him all this stuff and he dosnt understand the rules. im getting off topic but i really think if your going to get into the hobby treat you models well.

I am not criticising all kids for this,as I am a kid too(15 yrs old)

But I really think we should treat our money the right way as we,or our parents, worked hard for it.

It's just a game but it is also something spend grands on

I agree that we should treat our belongings well but critcising certainn groups is completely wrong. I've seen adults at the level or worse that some kids that you've described

In my post i didnt mean only kids i mean im only 15 but its MOSTLY younger kids. Most of the adults i know treat there models well because they have been doing it for a long time. That was just my experience

I treat my models as well as I worked on them. My orks look really bad and I don't care if they if I bunch them up or put them in a pile. My orks are plastic and glued with plastic glue, nothing bad will happen to them. My marines on the other hand is when I actually wanted to paint my army very well and did. So Im more careful with them because I took more time and effort to make them look good, unlike my orks which well one day I will referbish them soon.

I think its funny how everyone says "spend our parents money'

When I was a kid (12-18) I paid for everything I wanted. I worked for my money by doing chores....just something I observed, but I think that really goes towards the notion of parents dumping their kids at GW's and whenever they say they "need" something, they let them buy it.

---------------

People treat their models differently, some (and its not mostly kids...though it is at my GW) and its different from person to person. Though I frown upon people who only play the game and don't consider the background and modeling aspects of the hobby, in the end, it is up to them.

I believe it is more a question of respect. We who have worked hard to earn our money tend to respect the things we purchase, if for no other reason than we have to work hard to replace it.

I could rant endlessly on how entitled and privileged many (mostly younger, e.g. less than 30) people are. They are given things, and have no respect for the work required to obtain that item.

All that being said, it's their money, and if they want to throw it away, it is their right, as it is your right to be offended by their disregard.

In defense of some players/collectors... Its not always easy to justify buying a $50-200 case on top of the money just spent on what some Parents class as "Toys".
I admit that I am guilty of using a tacklebox and tote to transport my minis. I do, however take care to try to put some kind of padding in to keep the models from getting too damaged to play.

Being a 'Kid', I'm in the same boat; I have to spend the Money which I earn on Warhammer; I don't stroll around Games Workshop, or browse Wayland Games, and ask if I can have, 'This, This and This'. I ask if I can spend 'This on This, This and This', and there's a big difference there. Regardless, I take care of all of my things with a certain degree of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I go beyond the norm to ensure that they're properly regimented, in straight lines whenever they're sitting around or on Display, and never come into contact with each other or fall over during Transit. I treat all of my possessions like this, and Warhammer is no different; no matter how expensive or inexpensive it is, it is a shame to treat them with anything less than stalwart attention and care.

People can smash their stuff about if they like, just as long as they don't treat my stuff in the same manner. To me they are precious models that I've invested time and money in, to others they are just toys that have a limited lifetime. How many of us had toys that got broken as a kid? Most kids that treat them in the manner of disposable items are probably only passing through the hobby anyway. Wouldn't suprise me if they are the same sort that never really learn the rules and end up dumping the broken remains of their army on eBay.

Someone who mistreats and damages their stuff like that doesn't value it much, they might think others are the same and that would be my primary concern about letting them near my stuff, rather than the damage to their own. Just in case one shoves his unpainted and battered hoard at my stuff and then starts flicking my models over as they are killed in hand to hand. That kind of thoughlessness is why I don't play people I don't know.

I carry my well painted ork mobs in ziplocs as it's easier to get them out and being plastic they don't get damaged.

Some people just have no regard for their own property, let alone other peoples and they are somewhat suprised and mystified when it suddenly breaks and becomes unuseable.

I might be a little less careful with my grunts as they only have generic paint jobs done on them but on the whole I treat all my models with decent care especially the special charactors that I have made an effort to paint to higher standards.

Whats the point in spending lots of money on miniatures if your just going to let them get chipped paintwork or mashed up in the bottom of a bag!?

Runnin up on ya.

Meh. I'm 38, not a kid by any stretch, and they're just pieces of plastic to me. If I break one, I'll buy a new one and have some fun painting it. If paint gets chipped, I'll strip it and repaint it. I paint as a way to relax on a rainy day or while the wife is out shopping or for a sense of completeness with my army. If I get bored, I buy a new army and start over, which is mildly exciting in and of itself.

It's a game to me, not my life, not an addiction, not a means of income, a game. I can respect those that are better at painting the miniatures and playing the game than I am but I simply believe that little plastic army men are not worth putting that much of my essence into something that has so little meaning in my life.

To the self-righteous on both sides of the hobby vs. game debate, I recommend trying to see things from the other person's point of view and just enjoy the game/hobby/whatever that you have in common.

I'm over 50, and I fall into the 'chess pice' category. I do paint them myself (two reasons-1. many tourneys have a must paint your own army to win clause, 2. I'm too cheap to pay for it), but ya know what? They're toy soldiers for use in a game, not display pieces. Got a few of those that I keep in a case, and they don't go on the gaming table. They getr the treatment you seem to want me to give my playing pieces. For the ones I play with (generally IG), I pick up handfuls of minis and set them onto the table in a pile, I pile my casualties on the side, I treat them as what they are, toy soldiers. I do pack them for travel in a case tho. Sure it takes a while to paint them, and yes, every couple of months I have to go through and do some repair work. But so what. They're mine and if I want to disrespect them, I can. I'm not going to do it to yours, they are yours and how you treat them is up to you. Just because I'm into the hobby for the GAME instead of the modelling/painting, well, that's what I enjoy.

This might be just me but... dont we tend to think plastic as a durable material?

Maybe the "kids" you see treated the Warhammer minis roughly due to they assume it can take the punishment.

Dunno im just guessing :'D

Probably work

Really? It's really that big an injustice? The guys I play with keep their dudes in the gw boxes they came in. I'm the only one with enough travel bags to support my army (and transporting 2000+ pts of IG is no minor task). When I'm not transporting for a game, I keep my guys in one of those multi-drawer-slide-out boxes you can get at a hardware store for screws and the like. I store them in there.. .GASP... plastic to plastic! My GK and ICs are in there also, and they're pewter! OH NOES THE HUMANITY! I recently noticed that Creed was chipped up a tiny bit finally after almost a year of being bounced around like he's nothing, and I thought to myself: "He was fun to paint. I bet I can do better on him." I sat down and cleaned him up, and improved upon a few things that I should have done better the first time around, and it was quite enjoyable.

Anyway, the point of my long-winded antecdote is that your hobby isn't my hobby, your hallowed and most sacred creations are my little army men I paint while passing the time, and you like painting them once while I like an excuse to go back on old projects and improve them.

Hope no one falls off their high horse.

It does not matter how a person got their money, well as long as it was legal, if they pay for it they can treat it like they want. I take pretty good care of my painted models. If they are not painted, they get thrown around the box, as it does not matter what happens to them. Once they are painted, I take care of them, mainly for the sole reason of i hate to repaint something.

Now I have seen teenagers a lot younger than me (31) treat their toys a lot better than me. I have also seen older folks do just as the OP described in the first post. it is not a function of age.

I can understand you wanting people to treat your models with respect, but it's really none of your business what they do with theirs.

You can't assume that they are spoilt either. As a kid, I had to scrape and save to get models, but I kept them in cardboard boxes. You have to have enough money to paint and store them properly.
