Subject: Anybody else fed up with Vampires? (A Rant)
Is it just me or am I the only person who is really getting off with seeing moody teens/crap actors endlessly portray vampires? Everytime I switch on the TV, pick up a magazine, look at the advert on the side of a bus, all I see is sun dodgers and moody teenagers. Being a teenager used to mean something in this country. You would get tanked up on cheap cider and get yourself kicked out off a pool hall or youth club, or even a local library. Nowadays it's all eternal life and romance. There is only one cure- bring back this man to put the fear of God in them:

Thank you,Flashman, for bringing a modicum of class to this thread. Soladrin, Peter Cushing is one of the greatest chracter actors this island has produced in recent years. The ignorance on this site forever gets me down

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

OT - Yes, Vampires are at saturation point in films and tv, but to be honest, werewolves and zombies aren't far behind. Would dearly love to see something new and inventive. Hoping Inception ticks that box.

FITZZ, well said. Hammer may have churned out a load of guff most films, but in my mind, plague of the zombies, and the devil rides out, are as good as anything on celluloid. Does anybody remember 'Pyschomania' a horror film about a zombie motorbike gang taking over a quaint English village. I'm sure that was a Hammer film.
As for Star Wars - a low point in Cushing's (or anyone else's) film career.
OT- what I'm getting at is the original message of the gothic romance: forbidden love, what it means to human etc

I'm not sure if Pyschomania was a Hammer film, but I do indeed recall it very well,it's one of the first films I remember watching as a child as a matter of fact.
I thought that the gangs "skull helmets" were one of the coolest things I'd ever seen,of course I was 6 at the time.
A clip from the film..

Your probably right, but the idea of a zombie motorbike gang taking over an English village, has got to be one of the greatest, wasted film ideas known to man!!
Mark Hamill - a promising leading man who's career took a beating from the turkey that was Star Wars. Still, I suppose he got the Wing Commander series!
I'm signing off to watch Star Trek V on British tv. I've seen it about a thousand times, but damn it, Jim! It's spock and Mccoy

What? Even Mark Hamill's?
No,his low point would be "Corvette summer"...one of the goofiest movies ever.

You know who's cool? The invisible man. He should be in more movies, especially since you don't even need an actor to play him.
Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Never been a big horror genre fan of any sort, but not agin it either. However was thinking along similar lines to the OP last week in the book stores.
Noticed there is a lotta Twighlightesque stuff on the sellers' shelves.
What I find curious is that erstwhile Vamps were sexy but in a very dangerous way. The seduction was scary. There seems to be a lot of jolly nice sexy vamps around who won't feed on the heroine or try to turn her into Ms Vamp.
As I understand it Vampirism, certainly since Bram Stoker, have been symbolic of sex and synonymous with STD's. Syphillis in the 19th century and AIDS in the 1980's/90's.
If you don't believe that it's all about sex, look at the name of the guy who wrote Dracula.
Any hoo, there is a chaste vamp love/romance thing going on at present, which is odds with the sexual imagery that pervades the genre.
For whatever reason it is popular with teen girls of all ages, and possibly genders. Except for Dakka members, where the T word is Verboten!
The other change is the creature of the night is not only abroad in broad daylight, but sparkles like a glittery My Little Pony for the girls to love. He enhances the light and is super beautiful to behold.
Possibly Lewis Carroll summed it up best:
Twinkle twinkle little bat
How I wonder what your at.
Up above the world so high,
Like a tea tray in the sky.
Hey, has anyone ever thought that Twighlight Vamps are like Blood An......

historicaly, Vampires have always been synonimous with what ever scared society at the time. In the earliest vampire stories, they were diseased corpses, during the black plague or something similar. In what is now seen as the god ol', classic vampire, they were portrayed as vicious, murderous monsters living amongst us. This pattern was popularized aound the time that Jack the Ripper was wandering about. In the 20th century, they were related to STD's. They were sexy, but would kill you.
In the 21st century, they are angsty teens making bad decisions.
Edit: I just had an idea for a movie. A vampire set's out to put the fear back into the word. Cue people getting turned because they thought it would be fun, and the master Vamp saying something like: "Young people. Think they sparkle in the sun, they do."
It's either a really good, or a really bad idea. either way, it could make me a lot of money.

Yep, it was the Black Plague. In Venice, they actually put rocks in the mouths of those who died, because when you die by Plague, blood dribbles from your mouth. Easy to see how they thought up the thing behind Vamps ins't it?

Must admit not heard of the plague connection before, though I admit Vampire lore is not my thing.
But it makes for a powerful and terrifying thought of becoming one of the living dead in the context of religious belief. There would be a fear in all likelihood of not getting proper rites to get sent off to the after life if you see what I mean.
The current versions have no such terrors. For goodness sakes you still get to hang with your pals and go to the mall!

Australia (Recently ravaged by the Hive Fleet Ginger Overlord)
Apparently stakes and garlic have been utterly useless all along. The only thing Vampires truly fear in this day and age is a horde of rabid teenage girls.
