blessed rounds kill twlight vampires.... god i hate those type. Vampires do not burn, do not tan, do not sparkle... they EXPLODE in the sun light unless they're a pure blood and even then it still bothers them being out in the day

I'm fed up with people complaining about vampires. They are a creaton of modern monster mythos and are at best only tangentially related to the cross cultural amalgamation of mythos that they come from. The Vampires in Twilight are every bit as legitimate as the ones in underworld and neither one is accurate to the myths they pretend to portray.

I personally am just getting tired with the whole vampire thing. Once again, it's all about the bandwagon. Stephenie Meyer writes her own fantasies down in a book, tween girls lap it up like its the BEST THING EVAA!!!11!one!

People see she's making money. People decide: 'Hey, I want money!' and start crapping out all kinds of similar stories.....It happens all the time.

There used to be a "specialist" SF bookshop in Sydney.
It used to be a regular haunt of mine.

Once upon a time, "supernatural horror" had its own little nook down the end, in the shadows, next to the gaming related stuff. "Supernatural" romance did not exist. Mainstream SF genre stuff (Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5 etc) had the prime spot, two aisles as you walked in.

Now, supernatural romance has taken over those two aisles.
The trek and star wars stuff has been shifted to the back wall, with the regular SF and fantasy stuff sandwiched between.

When I were a lad, you would scarcely see a girl in the SF bookshop. Now, they can't keep them out. Unfortunately, they are the vapid, brainless teen set who think some guy called "edward" will take them away from all of their boring humdrum existence.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Ah yes, little saddens me more than entire sections in bookshops (and now my local library) that are labelled 'Supernatural Romance'.

She Who Must Be Obeyed's theory is that the Twilight nonsense is a modern version of the white knight syndrome. The knight saves the chaste maiden and continues to worship her from afar, without all that needless ing.

of course she also said our marriage was a modern retelling of the droolling caveman dragging off the maiden. hey wait...HEY!!!!

Well I can't say about the latter Frazzled, but my money is on it being so

But I reckon that is a good point about the white knight syndrome.
Which is why I found it paradoxical.
As mentioned above there is an erotic element to the vampire's kiss which defies the chaste relationship.
Maybe it is wish fulfulment of taming the predatory male.
good call imho

Thank you for voicing my sentiments on this matter.

There of course is the other bandwagon, the teenage boys who think they are all cool by hating on Twilight. They're really no better. And of course they will shell out a gakload of money for the new "Twilight Sucks" movie, which looks like it was by the same people who did "Epic Movie" and all that crap.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Its just the latest trend, people got all worked up over Harry Potter but since the last book came out and the films are nearly done people needed something to fill the gap. Vampires were a safe bet, everyone has heard of them and knows a little about them, couple this with the forbidden love angle and you can rope in the girlies as well. There are worse things out there and the simple answer is that if you find it annoying then just ignore it. They are no more than the Mills and Boon novels of the day.
Mrs squilverine loves the damned things and has countless trashy paper backs about moody emo vampires littering the house. This is a woman who has a law degree and has just been promoted to head of English at a new secondary school, she may well be the bad influence who has pushed hordes of angsty, spotty and slightly odd teen girls into buying this tripe.
As I type this she is actualy at the cinema with her mother (also a head of department at a different school) wathcing the latest twighshite film. She asked if I wanted to go and see it to which I responded "no thanks I'd rather cut my cock off with a rusty bread knife".

Twilight just hurts my eyes, hell even Kindred the Embraceds first four episodes are better than that rubbish.

What makes it worse, is that my mother who's a proper hardcore horror novel fan has fallen foul of it, and my middle brother who basically knows no better (never really been into this kinda stuff) loves it as well.

They are mortified that I think its trash, and no matter what they suggest I don't see it as awesome. My brother even has dared say to me the 'sparkle in sunlight' is the best idea for Vampire movies/stories he's ever heard.

I'll admit to being a Buffy/Angel fan. I have yet to read/see any Twilight, but the hatred is easy to buy into. One day, I'll force myself to read the damn thing and see for myself whether it's justified.

Twilight stole it's basic idea from Buffy/Angel but forgot to steal what made the series work. Humour. Buffy never took itself seriously for very long which made all the romance stuff palatable.

I'd disagree with that. I'd bet good money the author never saw those. Its not what the locus of the storyline is about.

Bingo

I think that is a fair assessment.
Personally I ain't that bothered by the Twilight phenomena.
I saw the first film on DVD with my daughter. Her friends had seen it and loved it as expected but given the hype my daughter felt disappointed.
We thought it was okay but nothing more.

That is the missing ingredient for sure Flashman. Twilight (movie not read the book) does take itself too seriously

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I watched Lesbian Vampire Killers the other day on satellite, just to see if it ws as dire as hyped.

Twilight is a paragon of cinematic art in comparison, in fact I think pretty much anything is.

Trust me on this one, dont watch this rubbish. I could only stomach it as background while doing something else. Bersides James Corden and Matyhhew Horne are so irritaingly chavtastic I wouldnt mind if they met a sticky end.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

White Wolf could do Twilight so much good.

'As Edward holds [broad] in his pale and most likely clammy arms, he notices something out of the corner of his eye. A vague shape rushing towards him, something with dark murderous eyes. Before he can turn to confront the rushing menace, he realizes that another is coming from a different direction. As he stands to face the oncoming horrors, he realizes all too late that the Malkavians have grenades in their mouths. Game over....."

I'm not sure why people are espousing white wolf as a superior mythos here. It's not really any better. White wolfs little clan setting isn't any more representative of vampire myths then twilight. It's more violent to be sure, but as soon as the underworld films actually manage to become good that will matter. Is this whole thread just repressed teenagers being annoyed that their favorite rpg book isn't the paramount fiction form for a fake movie monster any more?

Having actually read the books themselves, I'd say that while the books are pieces of crap the hate heaped on them is not completely justified. Yes, the main characters are complete Mary Sue's who exist only for the purpose of wish fulfillment on behalf of the author and certain readers. If you notice, Bella practically IS Stephenie Meyer in both looks and is no doubt her dream personality.

However, I will note that Stephenie Meyer is NOT a complete failure. Yes, she has created horrible main characters, and turned a whole generation of girls into vampire desiring insane people, I will acknowledge that she does have some strengths. If you notice, outside of Bella, and Edward most of the characters have fairly well developed back stories. Hell, I'd actually be interested in reading a book about Jasper's involvement in the vampire wars or Rosalie's roaring rampage of revenge. However, as Twilight is nothing more than Meyer's wish fullfillment fantasy, that's not going to happen. I personally believe that she is good at coming up with characters, she's just not good at maintaining their charactherization or developing a plot that is not completely dependent on half the characters clinging to the idiot ball.
