I've been eying this paintjob for my Guard : http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/thumb/3/34/Cadian39thChinchare.JPG/85px-Cadian39thChinchare.JPG
Some advice I read for how to paint them went like this:
Fatigues
White undercoat.
Basecoat with 2:1 DAG and CB.
Layer of 1:1 DAG and CB, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of DAG on highest points.
Armour
White undercoat.
Basecoat CG.
Layer of 2:1 CG and SW, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of 1:1 CG and SW on edges of armour.
Helmet
Undercoat white.
Basecoat Kommando Khaki.
Layer of 2:1 KK and BB, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of BB on edges of helmet.
Paint Legend
DAG = Dark Angels Green
CB = Chaos Black
CG = Catachan Green
SW = Skull White
KK = Kommando Kahki
BB = Bleached Bone
Would this work? Please post your ideas on how to paint these guys here.

well i cant see the pic (dunno why oh and soz for spelling)
but it sounds good but instead of BB highlights you should use dheneb stone highlights. Automatically Appended Next Post: Wait! now i see the pic my computer bugs a litle sometimes so... yeah
anyways i think you shoud start with a chaos black undercoat and make the DAG and CB from 2:1 to 3:1 then a badab black wash and a DAG and Snot Green (eww...) 2:1 highlight

Chaos Black undercoat as opposed to white? What's your idea behind that? I already have my models ready, but due to the fact that the previous owner has paint caked on I'm stripping everything and starting from scratch.

Oh, another guard player! That wants to do the same obscure paintjob!
I'm not able to paint until Sunday, I've got to strip 50+ infantry models. I don't even know what I'm going to do with the tanks. Automatically Appended Next Post: sluggaslugga wrote:Oh! ok then

Sure, I have pics in my Batreps. I literally have 1 1/2 well painted models, a chimera and half a vendetta. Links to my Batreps: (Hint, my army is the stuff that's pretty much all black)

Nice. I have to paint 50+ guard, 2 russes, 2 hellhounds, 3 chimeras, 10 ratlings, 9 heavy weapon teams, a vendetta, and a manticore.
God the horror. And summer's almost halfway done for me.

This shouldn't be too hard
1.) prime chaos black
2.) paint non-helmet armor olive drab and the helmet the green-tan color
3.) paint second coat of 2.
4.) highlight armor with green-tan color.
5.) pick out details

Because the Fatiques and armour are dark and it'll make much easier to paint and make it look good.

All the colours you plan to use as basecoats cover well on a black undercoat. You might actually find it takes longer to get a nice coat of that colour on the fatigues over a white undercoat.
You might find that adding SW to highlight the armour creates a chalky look. You should try Bleached Bone, a lighter, yellowy green, or SW with a cool (in terms of hue, not a yellow that is awesome) yellow. I would save adding any SW at all except for the very finest highlight honestly.
I'm not up to date on GW paint colours right now otherwise I could be more specific.

Okay, sure. My army has a black basecoat already, but that's on top of easily 2 layers of paint...Stripping time!
I was planning to use Catrol Super clean as a stripper but I heard it kill superglue, so I guess I'll just go the Simple Green Route.

yeah, BECAUSE HALF THE MODEL IS BLACK.
Now, if you were doing a black-and-white model, or black and a bright color, there would be grounds for debate, but as it's black and dark green that's covering a vast majority of this model, priming in white would be just silly.

Just another addendum to my SW suggestion, you might find you don't need to add CB to your fatigues basecoat of DAG if you water it down suitably and it's over a black undercoat.
DAG used to have pretty poor coverage, so it might be worth giving that a test on the first guy just to see if it's dark enough to act as your basecoat in one thing coat.

So would this paintjob work?
Fatigues
Black undercoat.
Basecoat with 2:1 DAG and CB.
Layer of 1:1 DAG and CB, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of DAG on highest points.
Armour
Black undercoat.
Basecoat CG.
Layer of 2:1 CG and SW, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of 1:1 CG and SW on edges of armour.
Helmet
Black undercoat.
Basecoat Kommando Khaki.
Layer of 2:1 KK and BB, leave basecoat in recesses.
Highlight of BB on edges of helmet.
Paint Legend
DAG = Dark Angels Green
CB = Chaos Black
CG = Catachan Green
SW = Skull White
KK = Kommando Kahki
BB = Bleached Bone
The only bad thing I can see in this right off the bat is that the fautiges seem like they won't show too much, with a CB and DAG mix, it would be too dark to tell. Maybe drop the CB on the fatigue mix?

My last two posts have suggestions for the armour and fatigues. Otherwise this should be fine, you'll obviously have to tweak some of the mix ratios as you work.

Ok, sweet. I'll just nab this: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat190010&prodId=prod1200064 Quick question, what about washes for this? Are there any I should use?

I wouldn't necessarily grab the GW spray, it's pricey and I've had equally decent results from $4 cans from Home Depot. There should be a bunch of articles floating around on that topic.
I don't think you _need_ any washes for this. The only thing it would really change is that you could put down a lighter version of your base colours, then wash it, then highlight. Unless you wanted a super quick alternative in which case you could just put down light base coat colours and then go with a couple of stages of washes.
Lot's of people would be fine with those results so it really depends how much time you want to spend per model and how you want them to look at the end.

I want them to look nice. Not amazing, but not ugly to look at. I would be willing to get washes if they made my guys look better, but not if it's a waste of time. I've got weeks of nothing to do, painting will kill time.
You mentioned the wash in your earlier post, would it be black wash? I really have no experience with these.

I think that was someone else.
Because it would be over mostly greens I wouldn't suggest a straight black wash, maybe a dark brown with a bit of green. At most a black/brown.
I'm a little out of the current GW paint loop, so you'd have to get specific names from someone else.
Honestly whether or not washes will make your models look better really depends on how good you are at painting.
If you're just starting out washes are a great way to quickly add effective shading. That's not to say that washes are only for beginners, but usually when they're used for rank and file models you're looking for speed and convenience.

I would do this. The simpler the better in general. The medium green and the spacewolf grey sounds a bit odd to me. Do some test models and see what you think.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
