I do it for the ladies...

Why do you tend to win your games of warhammer 40,000? Is it experience and skill? Do you cheat? Do you slip your opponent $20 and tell them to go down? Is it luck? Is it because you club new players to elevate yourself to god of the gaming store?

I would love to say that it is because I walk into every game with a plan, and know what my army is going to do, and execute it perfectly... but it is because of you.

Yes you dakka, all of you. I have read this site alot, and from it I gained knowledge, between real-life and dakka, aside from daemons, I know what every single unit can do, and how I can stop it. I know their vulnerabilites, I know what to do.

Knowledge.

Thanks by the way.

People generally have a hard time beating my Ork army. They don't usually have the firepower to deal with all my Ork boyz, and once my Nobz hit a unit I've pretty much got the game.

On the other hand, my Guard lose constantly. I play 2v1 games; my Guard and a buddy's Tyranids vs. Deathwing almost every week. It's hard to bring the bigger guns to bear with only 1000 points or so, and I occasionally make a stupid tactical blunder. I'm relatively new to the Guard so I'm still learning a lot.

My Space Wolves are just cursed. For some reason I can't roll to save my life with that army.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

I win for three reasons:

1. My education, background, and knowledge of principles of warfare allow me to exploit the average player on the battlefield.

2. Repetition. I play the same list, from the same army in every game. It scales up for down with points, but never changes - I've gotten very good using the same list.

3. Threat Analysis /SITREP: At the start of every game, I work through my opponents' list asking questions - I want to know where the most threatening things are to me, how many there are, where they are located, etc so that I can plan and respond appropriately. 40k allows for perfect information in every fight, and I make the best of it.

I cheat maliciously and obviously, at every opportunity. even if my opponent catches 99% of my obvious cheating, the 1 that gets through wins me games.

if they call me on it, I tell them I just made an honest mistake.

seriously though, what dash said. analyze the enemy list, find the biggest threat to your strategy, and plan to kill it.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I win mainly because my opponent's stupid mistakes outnumber my own.

Good luck is what's left of good planning when the plan contacts the enemy.

What I try to teach new players is to be proactive. Spend your opponent's turn planning what each of your units is going to do. Analyze its options. Should you step around the corner and shoot? Or are you just going to get your unit killed in return? Is a charge going to pay off, etc?
Do not be a reactive player. Never sit there watching your opponent move and do his thing, then having to react to what he has done. Force your opponent to worry about what you are doing.
That and a decent army list will go a long way toward winning games.

As an aside to Dash; do you really always play the same list? Seems like you would be quite bored. I enjoy trying out new combos and concepts I think up when I have nothing better to do.

Depends on the army. If my Sisters win, it's because I managed the movement phase properly (the most important phase of a Sisters game). For Orks, it's not entirely that different (with the purpose of movement being getting them into an assault). With Guard, it's more the shooting phase.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

And if you can avoid it, don't let other people use them, unless those have a record for not liking you anyway. If it likes you, don't let other people use it. I learned that from D&D, I had a particular D20 that gave me 18-20 85% of the time, but I let my fiance use it and it started giving him 18-20s and giving me 1-2s. Conversely, I let my fiance's little brother use some blue D6s that kept giving me 1s and now they give me 5s and 6s.

This, except if they call me on it, I point out they would win if they would simply practice cheating better. That or punch them in the groin and run away laughing maniacally.

Also, I offer sex for wins. Then I whip out my flailing tentacles. When they recoil in horror, I proclaim victory and promptly devour them. but only when playing my Emperor's Children.

Dumb luck for me most of the time. I'd consider myself an average player with average luck. Some armies I do better with. I'm pretty good with my Imperial Guard, lose most of my games with Space Marines, better than average with Sisters of Battle, Grey Knights I'm terrible with, about like marines. I am undefeated in 10 years of playing Dark Eldar, which makes them utterly boring for me.

Thorian Enclave Inquisitorial Guard - 6000points
Grey Knights - 4000pts
Divine Crusaders - 5000pts

Wife's Deathskulls - 4000pts

I don't. I am usually ecstatic when I manage a draw.

On the rare occasion when I do win, it's usually because my Plague marines decide they don't want to lie down and die today, no matter what hit's them.

Why?

For God and Country! Why else?

How?

I shoot the enemy's troops. I shoot them a lot.

A lot.

Actually, the truth is I don't win more than about 50% of the time, mostly because I'm still relatively new to the tabletop portion of the hobby (six months in at this point) but so are most other people against whom I play. Still experimenting with new armies and learning each one's various nuances as I play or play against them.

Back in 3rd edition, when I would win it came down to my tooled up Archon and his Incubi crashing into the center of the enemy force and utterly destroying it. The rest of my army was a meat shield. The Wyches were occasionlly useful for popping vehicles with Haywire. But really? It all came down to Archon Thranduil and his goons.

Now that I have started up again with Eldar, I haven't won yet lol!

Seems suspect. Objectives tend to be all over the place, so you're at best tying them as they sit on their objectives, and all those special/heavy teams are a huge liability in KP missions.

I win because I usually out play my opponent, in both unit match-ups and positioning. I pay attention to objectives and am always conscious of what game turn it is. I loose when my dice betray me, or if I just get lazy and stop looking ahead to the next turn.

You say that now, but wait until I start popping your Transports. First 3 to 4 turns I drown you in unimaginable amounts of firepower and turns 5 6 (and maybe 7) I run my conscripts to the center objectives. Boo Yeah.

If I win its generally because I have good luck with my Armour Saves, Even moreso with the GKs, bad luck in a single turn can cause a loss so easily with so few models.
