This covers both single player and MMO's
What is your favourite RPG game and why??
Fable: The Lost Chapters - It basically got me hooked onto RPG's with it great combat system, leveling up system and general story. Have completed it many, many times and still find new stuff.
It is followed very closely by Oblivion with its massive map, combat and story!
Pretty much both the same but Fable:TLC just clinches my fave as it was the 1st RPG type game I really enjoyed.
EDIT: Reason I started this thread is because I am playing Oblivion once again (On Xbox 360)

Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. (I like Mass Effect 2 also, but you can't explore planets anymore and that REALLY SUCKS!)
Also Red Faction: Guerilla if that counts as an RPG (Well, it has some RPG elements anyway.)

The Fallout series (1, 2 and 3) because it's Fallout and has the voice of Ron fethmothering Perlman. Mass Effect so far because it turned out to be something really good and not so bright eyed and happy as I initially thought it to be. I also still enjoy Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, which is buggy and flawed as hell, but still a blast to play.

This is a really difficult question, as I tend to only play games when they have some sort of RPG element to compliment them (I can't play linear games with no sort of character progression or customization; they feel absolutely worthless to me in most cases). The best I can do is give you a list of games.
Favorite Tactical RPG: Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics has an incredible soundtrack, some of the most creative character design and artwork that I've ever seen, one of the most complex and emotional stories ever written, and hands down, the best class system ever made. I'll still be playing this game ten years from now. It's too bad that the Tactics Advanced games were so awful, and have permanently scarred the Tactics name.
Favorite JRPG: Final Fantasy VIII. VIII fixed every single imaginable problem present in the JRPG formula, while still keeping the style of gameplay familiar. Unfortunately, people cried foul without reflecting on how perfect the system was, and Final Fantasy's actual gameplay began to sink from this point onward. The storyline actually required a lot of retrospective thought, which I've always really enjoyed. VIII's soundtrack was also the culmination of seven previous games from Uematsu, and was by far the best in the numbered series.
Favorite Western RPG: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Morrowind was an incredible experience from back to front, in it's own corner of a fantasy world that no one had ever had the chance to experience previously in quite the same way. The leveling system was perfect, the amount of content was ridiculous and painstakingly created, and the freeform nature of the game somehow managed to feel more rewarding than anything else. I really hated the ways in which Oblivion changed the formula and made the world so incredibly bland and generic.
Favorite MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies (Keep in mind that I mean the version before the combat upgrade that unfortunately no longer exists). Galaxies used to be an incredible freeform world, with the best crafting system and economy that any MMO has ever seen, and the ability to build your character to exactly your specifications without being unbalanced. Unlike the stagnant EVE Online, SWG actually felt alive, with real player interaction that actually affected your experience. It felt like a fully realized world. Now, they've completely destroyed the structure of the game and no one plays it anymore. I'm still searching for something to fill the void.
Favorite Action RPG: Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Dissidia is an entirely unique game. I've never played anything remotely like it. People try to describe it as a Fighting Game, but that's an incredibly innacurate description. There is so much content that I'm 300 hours in and still not even close to finished. Everything about the game is unique, from the intricacies of the combat and the system it uses, to the system used to generate and create items, to the character customization, to the setup of the 'story mode'. Even if you don't like Final Fantasy, there's a chance you will ike this game, as even though it seems like a game for fanboys, it doesn't have to be. It's difficult to find a game with this much attention to detail and willingness to try something new, and that's what makes Dissidia awesome. Unfortunately, the Storyline is awful, but this game is all about the gameplay anyway (and I was kind of expecting that with such a mashup, to be honest).
I realize that this probably pegs me as a Final Fantasy Fanboy, but the three games I listed are the only three Final Fantasies that I'll even pick up and play anymore. I've played through most of the games, but by no means am I obsessed with the series.

Quite a good responce. Sadly of the Games uv mentioned iv only played the last one lol. Dissidia was a love it or hate it game for me, if i loved the gameplay it would keep me playing for hours, if i hated it then it would become a dust magnet. The new take onto the gameplay was a real break away from the original FF series which I enjoyed. The fact it also had all the main characters from the series then theres a very good chance ur fav is there (mine being Cecil lol)
There are alot of RPG's that I feel need to be recognised but if i had a wall of text going through every one of them nobody would read it.

Dude, if you haven't played Final Fantasy VIII, you seriously need to. It's only something like 10 or 15 USD on the PlayStation Network, which will allow you to play it on your PSP. Here's why it's more than worth your money:
The 'Guardian Force' system is much like Tactics, but since you haven't played that either, I'll simply have to explain further. Basically, each of your summons has a list of it's own individual abilities that can be transferred to any character that the summon is equipped to. These abilities exist on a separate XP system known as AP ( AP is gained in every fight, and once you max out an ability's AP, it becomes useable), and there are a wide assortment of both active and passive abilities which can be equipped to different slots on each character. Basically, what this means is that a character can have as many 'classes' as you wish (depending on how many summons you have equipped to them), and you can pick and choose from the abilities of each 'class' to create your ideal character. If this helps to give you an idea, Materia has nothing on the Guardian Force system.
The game scales to your character's actual level, but it's on a diminished scale. This means that you can run through the game without grinding whatsoever, but the game does get considerably easier as you level up. If you don't want to spend time leveling, though, you never have to. The magic system was completely reworked in VIII, and it is most people's biggest complaint, but most people don't realize the inherent balance in the system. Instead of having an expendable pool of ' MP' that you can just regenerate with items whenever you need to, Magic is drawn from specific enemies, and used in essentially the same way that items are (you can have a stack of 100 of any magic). However, you can 'junction' magic to any of your character's stats, such as HP, Attack Power, or Defense, and the better the magic is, the more of a bonus it gives to the stat you junction it to. This forces you to really question whether or not you need to use your magic, because when you do, it makes your stats go down, and you may not be able to draw that specific magic again for a while. Absolutely brilliant, in my opinion, and far superior to having a virtually limitless pool of MP (which always caused magic to be overpowered in every single traditional JRPG).
You never have to grind for money. Money is given to you for each in-game step you take, and the amount is based of your knowledge of the game world and system. You also never really have to focus on buying new weapons or armor. Each character has about three different weapons that you can build for them, and they actually have a profound effect on your character's effectiveness (and not simply a raise in attack power). You can also 'junction' elemental and status magic to your attack and defense, so that completely removes having to buy or equip a specific weapon or piece of armor to attack with or defend from a certain element or status effect.
Instead of having a bunch of disjointed minigames that ultimately serve no purpose in the game, Final Fantasy VIII has a card game that you can play with most NPCs. When you manage to collect rare cards, these can be refined into some of the game's rarest items, which includes items that are necessary for building Ultimate Weapons, for example.
Squaresoft really thought of every resounding problem in the genre, and fixed nearly every single one of them. I couldn't hope to touch on every intricate facet of the game. I almost forgot to mention that VIII is easily one of the best-looking games on PSone, and it's still easily tolerable in the current generation (if you're worried about that sort of thing). The music is brilliant, the world is, thematically, the most coherent world to exist in a Final Fantasy game (aside from perhaps X), and the story is mostly focused on war and the complex nature of time paradoxes (VIII requires a lot more thought and speculation to make sense of the storyline than any other Final Fantasy, which I really enjoy). Seriously, you'll be doing yourself a favor by buying it off the PSN.
Red dead is an RPG?? Hmm always thought it was shooter type, still doesnt interest me much tbh
Red Dead Redemption definitely has a few RPG elements in it, but it's not exactly an RPG. It's still one of the greatest games of this generation, and if you don't plan on playing it, you'll be missing out on an incredible experience regardless. Trust me. I hate western movies and the like, and I love Red Dead Redemption.

VII and VIII are so far removed from each other that it's not even funny. That's probably why so many people hated VIII when it first came out, and have grown to respect it more with time. It is more 'science fiction' and 'high technology' oriented, but in a totally different (and more coherent) way. That's about the only thing that they even come close to having in common.
FYI, Final Fantasy VIII is 1800 MB, which is a pretty hefty file. If you don't have the room on your Memory Stick, I recommend using the USB chord to transfer your existing PSP data to your computer to fit Final Fantasy VIII on there, then transfering it back whenever you need to. That's what I have to do; my Memory Stick is only two gigs.
Be sure to let me know what you think of it if you ever do buy it.

Morrowind hands down was mine. I spent practically a year and a half of my life in that game. I still play it from time to time, though its showing its age but it was still a good ass game!
And Fallout/Fallout3. I dunno if youd call Fallout an rpg but its close anyways. Im still blown away at how awesome the original was. Fallout3, seriously this game is just the tits. I cant wait for New Vegas to drop.

Id have to say Kotor 1 and 2 are absolute tops, SWG was yes an excellent MMO, with some features that even modern day MMOs really need, like the economics and crafting, god bless you SWG.
ANYWAY
Fallout 3 was fun as hell, red dead redemption isnt an RPG AT ALL but its an awesome game, I reccomend it and dont fall under the influence that it is the same as GTAIV, GTAIV has nothing on RDR.
Fable TLC i have to agree with, for all the hate its an awesomely cool game.
And, even tho its a shooter, I have to mention tribes: vengeance. Runs on the UT04 engine and is old as hell, but its one of the funnest game mechanics I've played in a long time, and its story is the best, SO MUCH BETRAYAL.
I love betrayal, unless its in the form of kreia...the betrayer...GRRRRRRRRR. (anyone else who craid when they crashed on malachor V thumbs upp....oh wait.)

All time favorite has to be Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I really could never get into Morrowind (I always thought the combat sucked, tbh) but Oblivion I've been having a blast with. I just love the fact that I'm the guild master of both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves' Guild, a vampire, and have a couple thousand gold pieces at about level 6 - and still haven't started the main storyline.

Final Fantasy is the one for me, amazing games. Espically the 3 made for the original Playstation.
In recent years Fable has been a big one, started on Fable 2, & i recently picked up a very good second hand copy of Fable 1 for £2.94, and the Third is getting a release days before my next birthday so will naturally be picking that up.
Fallout 3 was also epic, in scale & detail, You really could believe you were in another world playing that for too many hours in one day. Again the new fallout will be on my shopping list once released.
