I just felt that it was particularly interesting that most people are saying 'Morrowind' and not 'Oblivion'. I thought I was one of the only people that felt this way.

And I agree, Bethesda is one of my very favorite development studios. They have the best grasp on what makes a good open-ended game, even if they do get a little repetitive with their own formula.

FF series much?? lol. I know during the FF series the combat is mostly the same turn based fights. I do however like their combat in FFXIII as its a bit different than just wait for 1 bar to fill then attack, you pretty much choose how many bars to use to attack.

The only game i personally have played from the FF series that doesnt use this mechanic is FF7:Crisis Core, very well made game.

I just love the fact that I'm the guild master of both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves' Guild, a vampire, and have a couple thousand gold pieces at about level 6 - and still haven't started the main storyline.

And thats the really big problem I personally have with Oblivion. Yea its a nice polished game, and the combat mechanic really is pretty awesome (FINALLY you can punch things to death how awesome!) but I think the magic was totally hoed in that game for starters. In Morrowind I used to spend hours just thinking up magic spells, doing the intelligence "cheat" and making them happen. I once created my version of the Icarian flight spells, I couldnt jump as far, but I was about halfish way there. And dont get me started on the enchantments for it.

Same with the lvling system. That REALLY bugged me (since I was never a HUGE magical user fan) the best I did was beat the entire game by like lvl8. And that just wouldnt happen. I mean at 8 your BARELY better then a commoner. Not to mention you cant really mix and match armor sets. Bummer on that one.

But other then that I do agree the game is pretty damn cool. I plan on saving up some cash to buy it for the PS3 here some day. I enjoyed it other then those 2 major things.

I never said that Final Fantasy didn't beat it's own formula to death (with a few rare exceptions); I only mentioned that Bethesda are starting to.

I have to respectfully disagree with Crisis Core being a good game. I thought it was awful. Very basic system that never requires you to do more than simply attack and dodge, and everything important was handled with a random slot machine. I also felt that the storyline was awful, and the change in the design of the world was equally bad.

Bethesda also publishes games that aren't developed in-house. The only games that BethSoft have really sunk their teeth into are The Elder Scrolls Series, the new incarnation of the Fallout Series, and Call of Cthulu (which I believe was scrapped). They don't really have time for anything else; their games are massive.

Hehe all this talk of RPG's makes me want to go back to play some of the older ones. Especially Fable:TLC however I heard the Xbox 360 no longer has backwards compatability due to some server issue which doesnt really make sence to me

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I have to make a top5 list... I can't choose.

In order of time burnt:
Baldur's Gate Series
Fallout 1+2
FF:Tactics
Diablo 2
Ultima Series

I easily spent more time re-playing FF:X than on any single Ultima game, but Tactics... I still break it out often.

3. Knights Of The Old Republic 1 (two was good but the rushed development/release of the game was really apparent)
4. Mass Effect 1 (The second felt more like a third person shooter than an RPG)
5. Dragon Age: Origins
6. Fallout 3

I debated putting Borderlands on the list given it's talent system/weapon looting/quests etc.

Bethesda is a great developer, only issue I've had with the games they make is with the animations/appearance of character faces (though F3 improved the appearance of characters significantly).

And that they don't test play their games anymore before they release them. That and the fact that when fan patches fix a lot of issues that Bethesda ignores with their patching, they (Bethesda) take the credit for it.

The 'Guardian Force' system is much like Tactics, but since you haven't played that either, I'll simply have to explain further. Basically, each of your summons has a list of it's own individual abilities that can be transferred to any character that the summon is equipped to. These abilities exist on a separate XP system known as AP (AP is gained in every fight, and once you max out an ability's AP, it becomes useable), and there are a wide assortment of both active and passive abilities which can be equipped to different slots on each character. Basically, what this means is that a character can have as many 'classes' as you wish (depending on how many summons you have equipped to them), and you can pick and choose from the abilities of each 'class' to create your ideal character. If this helps to give you an idea, Materia has nothing on the Guardian Force system.

also you need to know exactly which gf you need to combine to max out your group and not to lower the friendship between the gf and the person its connected to.

The game scales to your character's actual level, but it's on a diminished scale. This means that you can run through the game without grinding whatsoever, but the game does get considerably easier as you level up. If you don't want to spend time leveling, though, you never have to. The magic system was completely reworked in VIII, and it is most people's biggest complaint, but most people don't realize the inherent balance in the system. Instead of having an expendable pool of 'MP' that you can just regenerate with items whenever you need to, Magic is drawn from specific enemies, and used in essentially the same way that items are (you can have a stack of 100 of any magic). However, you can 'junction' magic to any of your character's stats, such as HP, Attack Power, or Defense, and the better the magic is, the more of a bonus it gives to the stat you junction it to. This forces you to really question whether or not you need to use your magic, because when you do, it makes your stats go down, and you may not be able to draw that specific magic again for a while. Absolutely brilliant, in my opinion, and far superior to having a virtually limitless pool of MP (which always caused magic to be overpowered in every single traditional JRPG).

which means that you cant use all the great spells you have because your stats go down.
and having every spell on every char 100 times is not limitless?at least you have to use an item to regain mp in other rpgs.

Instead of having a bunch of disjointed minigames that ultimately serve no purpose in the game, Final Fantasy VIII has a card game that you can play with most NPCs. When you manage to collect rare cards, these can be refined into some of the game's rarest items, which includes items that are necessary for building Ultimate Weapons, for example.

right, its much better to only have 1 game that sucks.
while the game itself isnt too bad and has a wide variety of rules, its just annoying to play it to get the cards you need again and again and again...

I almost forgot to mention that VIII is easily one of the best-looking games on PSone, and it's still easily tolerable in the current generation and the story is mostly focused on war and the complex nature of time paradoxes (VIII requires a lot more thought and speculation to make sense of the storyline than any other Final Fantasy, which I really enjoy).

while i agree on the point that the graphics are great i cant say the same thing about the story.

most characters are boring, you get the standard love story for the main character and the story is kinda easy to see throu and doesnt make sense, even if you know whats going on.

a lot of critique from my side here.
nonetheless i enjoyed ffXIII and its not a bad game at all(you really should get it) but im more a ff1-7 person ^_^

Friendship is only significant if you want to make the most out of actually summoning your Guardian Forces, which is inconsequential when compared to the possibilities of other combinations of abilities. Also, there are items that boost friendship and supercede this for when you really need to use your GFs.

which means that you cant use all the great spells you have because your stats go down.
and having every spell on every char 100 times is not limitless?at least you have to use an item to regain mp in other rpgs.

You just answered your own question. Having 100 copies of a spell is only significant to boosting your stats. Losing stats every time you cast a spell is far more limiting that a virtually endless pool of MP. Also, you forget that it takes effort to find those spells and draw them from enemies and points on the map, and you don't have unlimited access to them.

its not knowledge.you take tests and everytime you pass a test you get more money after a certain amount of steps.
those "test about your knowledge" are 10 y/n questions which obviously can be answered by anyone, even if you never heard of final fantasy

Good luck passing any of the SeeD questions without actually playing the proper game (short of cheating with a strategy guide).

right, its much better to only have 1 game that sucks.
while the game itself isnt too bad and has a wide variety of rules, its just annoying to play it to get the cards you need again and again and again...

It was also annoying to race and breed Chocobos again and again so you could get the Gold Chocobo, but plenty of people did that. At least the card game was far more involving and entertaining.

And yes, it's better to have one game that sucks than a bunch that suck even worse. Even if you hated the card game, you still have to admit that it was worth more than the pointless and trivial minigames in VII, or the horrible game that was Blitzball.

while i agree on the point that the graphics are great i cant say the same thing about the story.

most characters are boring, you get the standard love story for the main character and the story is kinda easy to see throu and doesnt make sense, even if you know whats going on.

I never said the story was great (even though that's my opinion), I just stated that it requires much more thought to make sense of than any other Final Fantasy. It's perfectly possible to make sense of the storyline, you just have to play a little game of 'connect-the-dots' to put the storyline into proper perspective once it's over. There's also a lot that's subjective. I'd say it's closest to the 'Chrono' series without being quite so convoluted.

I felt that the characters were much more relatable and realistic than previous characters in the series, and not quite so two-dimensional or stereotypical. They tried to add this 'personal' weight to the stereotypes in IX, which I thought was kind of cool, and X dealt more with archetypes. XI didn't have characters with personality (aside from your own), XII's characters were fairly inconsequential to the actual plot, and I can't comment on XIII's characters quite yet. While VIII's characters had their flaws (writing wise, not character development wise), they were still far less stagnant and generic than anything the series had previously offered.

Also, even if the love story was fairly standard, at least it wasn't the underdeveloped mess that took place in VII.

you just need to answer the first question with yes and the rest with no.same for the 2nd,3rd...question.depending on each result you know if the first,2nd,3rd...question is right or wrong.

ffXIII can be talked about for hours and i understand why you dont like this or like something else, but its probably the FFgame that splits the ff community the most.

there are a lot of great things in ffXIII but you love or hate them.

i enjoyed every second(hell,i watched the fight of the gardens countless times) but overall it just didnt do it for me(prob selphies fault XD ).sounds weird i know.
