there are a lot of great things in ffVIII but you love or hate them.

i enjoyed every second(hell,i watched the fight of the gardens countless times) but overall it just didnt do it for me(prob selphies fault XD ).sounds weird i know.

You know the worst part? If you don't enjoy VIII, you have a thousand other JRPG games that play in essentially the same way as the games that you do enjoy, with only minimal changes to keep the games in question interesting. If you honestly appreciate every change that VIII made to the JRPG system, then you're stuck with VIII (as you've been burnt out on the thousands of other similar titles in the genre). Every other game that radically changed the formula did so in an incredibly invasive way, to the point where you're no longer playing a game from the same genre. VIII is the only game to offer a solution to every conceivable complaint in the genre without destroying the basic formula.

It's unfortunate that there weren't more games within the genre that catered to my tastes and general disinterest in the way things tend to work within a JRPG, because then I wouldn't have to defend Final Fantasy VIII so readily.

Pain is an illusion of the senses, Despair an illusion of the mind.

My favorite RPG of all time is Final Fantasy 6 (Released as 3 on the SNES, the version I initially played). Fantastic story, art, combat...the game had it all. I also believe it was one of the earliest "Open-play" games on the market (You could pretty much choose how you wanted to handle World 2).

Final Fantasy Tactics would be very, very close behind it. I agree that it's the best class system ever devised, and the story was top notch (probably better than FF6's, really). My ONLY problem with it was the inability to fast-scroll the text. My god it had the slowest dialogue EVER.

Fallout 3 is currently sucking up my time like nobody's business. I haven't enjoyed a game this much for years and years. I'm glad I picked it up in time to really savor it before New Vegas comes out.

For one that nobod's mentioned/knows about - Talonsoft's Jagged Alliance series. I remember playing the 2nd version until the wee hours of the morning on a dial-up modem with a friend, but they really knocked it out of the park with the 3rd one. Can't remember what the title was exactly, but it was a heck of a military RPG game.

Final Fantasy 8 killed the series for me I'm afraid. The draw system just killed it for me. FF9 almost brought me back into the fold, but then 10 came out and I haven't been able to stomach a FF since, which is a pity considering how much I enjoyed Tactics and 6 (7 too, really, although dropping to 3 characters killed me).

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Its i tie between the Fallout Series and Fable for me.
I like the Mass effect series but at times its a bit repetitive and i hated mining in ME2, but still it was a good game and ive played it through a few times.

Favourite MMO: Guildwars 2 Nightfall
This user friendliness and anti grind gameplay puts this game far above others in my opinion. It was also cool to see your character to have voice acting and actually contribute towards the storyline in cut scenes rather than be a silent, voiceless observer like 99% of games.

Favourite JRPG/Cinematic Style RPG: Final Fantasy VIII
Unlike other JRPGs, the story is actually well written and makes sense. It is everything a story should be, from being dramatic, comedic, addictive and emotive. I’ve always thought an FFVIII movie or novel would do well. The combat system was also decent. It rewarded the player for contributing effort and if a player put in the hard yards, they could get a god like character by the end of the game.

Favourite Western RPG/Old School RPG: Fallout 2
I personally like Fallout 2 because of its tongue in cheek humour and freedom aspect of the game. While I am also a fan of all the Fallout games, Fallout 2 was the most successful in implementing this. Character development was both strategic and entertaining. The only downside to playing Fallout 2 now is the atrocious amount of bugs so anyone wanting to play it now should jump onto no mutants allowed and download some mods.

Favourite Diablo Style RPG: Sacred 2
Up until last year I would have put Diablo 2 here. Sacred 2 essentially provided what Diablo 2 lacked:
• Better Story.
• More challenges.
• Better item crafting system and less punishing drop rate.
• Runs on both PC and console. All versions capable of online multiplayer and the console version capable of 2 player single console co-op.
It was also interesting to see an RPG that didn’t use a mana system and have an in depth skill chaining system.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Ishar and Ishar 2, both classic RPG games on the Amiga. They'd look poor today, but I remember them being enthralling and deep games to play at the time. Both excellent sandbox games long before magazine writers coined the phrase for GTA 3. You could literally do what you wanted, doors permitting and had vast worlds to explore.

Dungeons and Dragons - Warriors of the Eternal Sun on the Megadrive. The first D&D game that actually worked well, I'd had games on the Comm 64 and Amiga that didn't seem that great. But the console element made this a great game to play. Oddly I picked this up for £4 just reccently on ebay, and although it looks ancient, it is still offers a lot of fun.

Warsong on the Megadrive. (Well Genesis officially as it was a US only release I had imported.) The first tactical RPG style game I played. A style of game that has become a fave of mine leading through many games including Shining Force, Vandal Hearts and up until most recently Disgaea.

Secret of Mana on the SNES. Although I also enjoyed a Link to the Past, this game was my fave japanese style RPG for a long time, that was until I played.

Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. One of my fave games of all time for a long time, took up way too much of my time as a young man, probably only now beaten by the ammount of time I've played WoW. Although oddly I've never enjoyed any Final Fantasy game since this one, I do wonder if the style has passed me by. The walking around, suddenly in combat thing annoys me now. I like to see my enemies coming and make the call if I fight or not. The story was epic though.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowwind, and then Oblivion. The last two big RPG's I've played before WoW. Both where excellent games, and I enjoyed them although didn't compleate either. Just due to time restrictions at the time I was playing them, plus taking too much of an advantage of the 'sandbox' worlds they offered. I'd say I liked Morrowwind more out the two mind.

Since I've played WoW, I find I struggle with standard RPG's. Its odd I try them still, but the worlds seem empty, thus I really only try new MMO's now when I'm looking for a new RPG fix. Although as well as getting Warriors of the Eternal Sun, I got the Megadrive 360 title with both Shining Force games on.
So maybe I'm going backwards. I know I'd love to find a decent amiga emulator to run Ishar 2 again and in my dreams I'd have loved to see a remake. Sadly Silmarils are long deceased as a games company.

yea i can agree to that, after playing the likes of Runescape and World of Warcraft single player RPGS do have a sence of lonliness to them. Heck maybe soon somebody will make an Oblivion/Morrowind type game that encorporates multiplayer, would be hard to do but if done well could revolutionise RPGs.

I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy VIII. I thought the characters were awesome. I did as much as I could in that game including sidequests... I even bought a PocketStation for it.

Knights of the Old Republic is up there as another favorite. Its one of the few RPGs that I've bothered to play more than once through.

Also, have I missed it, or has no one mentioned Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars???

Edit: Also, whoever said Red Dead Redeption needs to be tied down to a chair and forced to play FFVI and Chrono Trigger back-to-back in one sitting. And then to spend the next 2 months of their life playing Morrowind non-stop. Because they clearly don't know what an RPG is

It used to be Star Wars Galaxies before it went bottoms up. I had a awesome character that I was really happy with. A Mandalorian Commando with a pet slice hound and a Krayt ship. I've even made an entire narrative around him.

But since Galaxies is now a steaming pile of poop I'm lookinh forward to Star Wars The Old Republic. I'm not sure I'm very excited about the limits in clothing available per caste nor the limit to playable species that look pretty much human with a differant skin color and maybe something differant with their head. Yeah Galaxies was pretty much the same way but at least they had Mon Calamari, Bothans and Wookies to make up for it. Anyway still excited

1: Morrowind- that game still owns some of my soul.
2: oblivion- should have been better in every way to morrowind but missed on a couple of points. Still an amazing game.

Secret of mana was also good.

IMO, FF VIII was way too easy. I lost interest before I beat it.

I don't think Bioware would ever work with Bethesda. Bioware's games are -mostly- free of major bugs (ME2, I'm looking at your game-stopping issues), and their storylines are quite engaging. Meanwhile Bethesda has either never heard of playtesting, or just won't spend the time and money on it. So we get Bethesda games that just -love- to freeze up, crash to desktop, or cause the player to fall through the ground. And the storylines? I've heard Morrowind to be quite good, but Oblivion's storyline was quite clear and obvious in it's direction within the first hour of gameplay. And don't even get me started on Fallout 3's less-than-satisfying plot.

I'd rather Bioware keep their good rep
