I go about 5 times a week and do an hour of cardio and work a different muscle group each time. I still need to lose a significant amount of weight.

Over the summer I was going for 7 hours a week and walked about 2 miles a day. I did 10 minutes of sprinting followed by two hours of lifting and other assorted activities three times a week. I need to settle back into a schedule though, the start of the the schoolyear killed my previous one.

about 5 times a week

That is more often then i do and its my job. One pound of fat is 3500calories, and it probably took a long time to gain on the weight. But 5times a week you should see really fast results. Congrats

@vidicator
You work cleaning a gym? Or as weight room staff?

No i work at an apartment complex that has decided hmmm we are spending too much money so lets cut the cleaning lady and make the GROUNDSKEEPER clean the whole clubhouse which includes a gym with about 20 machines in it. I never realized how dirty gyms can be.

General fitness and it's a very varied routine. I also include core workouts like situps and machine work like rowing when I say lifting. It's less then half freeweights. I'm not too technical in my descriptions since I'm not too familiar with the parlance.

Generally your body can only tolerate being under stress for about an hour until it stops being beneficial. But if you have been doing it for some time it may work for you. Also varying your workout is very harmful to muscle growth. Just fyi

How is varying the workout harmful? Working my legs harms my chest?

It is alright to work different muscles during different work outs. But its not alright if you go in the gym and decide to do arms, and then just work out your arms with random exercises and random sets, reps, order, intensity weights, exercises. Your body takes a few workouts just to get proper motor neurons before growth can really start. Doing the same work out for between 4-6 weeks is the best. Also be consistent in the time of day you work out. You should really only change one variable at a time.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by varied, I meant full body. Variation between groups. It's a somewhat static process, I just try and get a bit of everything. Who knows, I'm probably doing some things wrong but I've seen marked improvements of what I can run, lift, and endure over the last year so I don't think I'm doing everything wrong.

Up till about two months ago, I worked out two hours at home.

I have since toned it down to about half an hour when I'm weightlifting, and between half an hour and an hour for cardio.

It's good for cardio? It allows for full body coverage? It accommodates schedules better then more shorter visits?

Its good for weight loss, because you burn lots of calories. It is not good for endurance, strength or cardio. You should not work out your whole body in one day, unless you are doing a circut because you can only get into the gym less then twice a week and it should be around a 45 minute work out.

Strength is about out putting the most energy is the SHORTEST amount of time.
Endurance is best done under fast high intensity.
Cardio is fastest improved by Interval training of rest and sprints.

(Huge generalization to training goals, but you can see why long training doesnt seem to have a purpose other then to burn lots of calories and wreak havoc on your body.)

The only group of people doing two hour work outs are veterans whose whole day revolves around eating sleeping and training. You should be atleast 5 years into training before it will be beneficial to do more then a hour.

I have a lot of time on my hands and it's a more productive way of spending it then banging my head against a brick wall.
