I am done with the crap hole of a game shop where I live.

Now I have mentioned before here just how bad this store happens to be. The store is filthy, the customer base is disgusting, and the ownership is happy with it remaining just that way. I had vowed after my last bad experience to never go there again and instead just visit a store an hour and half away on the weekends. However this past week I needed some modeling supplies to finish up a project I wanted done by this weekend so I reluctantly made my way to game store hell.

Same overbearing odor of unwashed bodies, rotten food filled garbage cans, and general funk washed over me as I walked in. Someone hanging out at the store decided to bring in his 1yr old kid. Not like stopping by to say hi with his screaming toddler, but actually had a playpen set-up with his kid crying and crying inside.

So I am just get my crap and get out. One last second thought has me decide to go grab a Tactical Space Marine box and I walk to the shelf to grab it and almost run into a late teen, early twenties gamer kid. Note I said, gamer KID, not gamer GUY. I stress that because the wash of overwhelming body odor that literally made me gag and give me a headache at the same time is what almost all of you would associate with gamer GUY; old, overweight, greasy, etc, etc. However this was a young guy, dressed fairly well, long combed clean hair, clear complexion. but smelling like he hadn't showered in weeks and was wearing a very full adult diaper.

I didn't bother with the purchase of the Tactical SM box. I got what modeling items I needed, and walked out of there still gagging on the taste of body odor. I stand by my comparison between this place and the place I can only go to on the weekends;

As a customer, if I have pride in my game store, I will treat it with respect. I won't spill crap, I won't show up smelling like old cheese, I won't piss all over the toilet seat, I won't bring a screaming toddler to hang out with me, etc, etc, etc. If I was a store owner, I would demand that my customers respect the store as they would their dear old <insert loved relative here> personal home. Why would you let customers treat your place of business, your livelihood, like a porno booth linoleum floor? I can only imagine that if the store is ok for the owner the way it is maintained, just what the condition of his home must be.

Amen, Brother Ramses, preach the gospel!

I drive an hour one way to get to the other game store we have in town because the one that's 15 minutes away has earned my eternal scorn for the attitude and practices of the owners.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Its sad to have to shun a LGS, especially when our community is tiny.

But if there's a better one, spend your money there. Mabe it will make the bad store clean up its act.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

There ARE no LGS in Brisbane. We have two GW, one has one table one has three. They are packed all the time. There are three or four active gaming groups on the other side of the city which is a 40 minute drive in good traffic.

Even if I get there on an event day it's not ensured there are people to play, and forget it if you don't want to play against MEQ. Count yourself lucky if you can rock up for a game, smelly and filthy or otherwise.

Give a thought for those without LGS's such as Ordo Dakka.
I guess you are kind of lucky though, you have two GW's close to you. I have to drive 20 minutes (not an easy thing for a person who can't drive, has tons of homework, matches on Saturdays, school ending at 7pm normally and such and such) to reach ONE small GW. The staff there are nice though, as are the customers. Oh well, since I have to do a hobby for DoE I'll have a very good excuse to go there now

The independent LGS near my parents in Cardiff closed recently. I have to wonder how it lasted so long, the store was always clean but the staff were antisocial. There were often 2-3 of them and I assume they were all staff. They were always playing Magic the Gathering or somesuch on a table in the corner. But the table was backed against the miniature racks where they had all the Ral Partha and others. You were ignored when you went in, and if you said "excuse me" for them to allow you access to the miniatures they would huff and puff making you feel like an inconvenience for even entering the shop. Sometimes they would put the game on hold and go elsewhere in the shop, other times they would move about and inch and let you either squeeze behind or reach over, or simply give up and leave. It was best when there was just one guy in the shop, then you'd actually be able to look at the stock and get served promptly.

Ah, and the lack of a FLGS is why www.vassal40k.info is so awesome! We can play 40k at home.

Vassal isn't 40k Dash. I'm sure it gives some semblance of the tactical side of the game, but it has none of the tactile features of the game.

Not to mention, it's just staring at a screen. Playing with toy soldiers is about playing with toy soldiers and other human beings. There are so many better multi-player computer games, if I'm going to stare at a screen, Vassal isn't even on my radar.

They SHOULD invent some kind of version of Warhammer 40k table top for the computer so it kinda resembles the game...maybe based off of a game scenario..maybe like Dawn of War...Yeah! And when it gets popular, we'll make a Dawn of War 2!

My idea for how DoW should have been was, you an opponents agree on points amount.
You can then spend those points on units like in the actual game.
You then deploy all your units, and play.

That would be awesome. I know every time I lose tactical marines in the tabletop game I just pump more resources gained from holding objectives and I can resurrect the downed models. Oh, wait. Maybe they are kind of very different...

Dawn of War is such a swing and a miss. It is nothing LIKE Warhammer.

I have all the DoW games and each time my single bloodletter squad I teleported in claims the entire map while I stock up on 3-man chaos marine squads I die a little inside.

No, but there are several very good clubs (that meet outside of stores) who have some very nice people in them. I recommend you look up the Blind Pig club (Holland Park, I believe).

I personally gave up playing in a GW or LGS many years ago. There were just other better options around.
I don't have to put up with squealing children or obnoxious smelly gamers.
Club security keeps them out.

(My club meets in the boardroom of a local sports club).

life.

I feel sad you guys actually have some nice people near you. I have to drive an hour and a half to get to any of the game stores nearest to me. Not only that, but the one I went to most because it had the nicest staff/players just closed so now I have to go to a store where (while being on good terms with the owner) the playerbase is rude overopinionated and plays nothing but 40k and lotr (i play fantasy.)

The other store that I have acess to plays both 40k and fantasy, but the playerbase also sucks. To top it off no one in my area plays because the hobby is way too expensive for them.

The only real shining light I have left are the two HMGS-S conventions a year and possibly the necro.

Have you checked out Amorous Armadillo Game Shoppe, Marcus? Its in the same plaza as Rhubarb and run by John Vega (Former Rhubarb manager) and has most of the Rhubarb community there now.

Its where we game most often.

Also, if you end up playing vassal, it can be fun to actually set up a table on your end and proxy your opponent's army, then work the game out. I did it once, and the main problem was me disagreeing about where his models were abouts

I have to drive about an hour to get to any gaming shops at all myself. Part of the reason I don't go as often as I'd like is because I'm waiting for my son to get out of the screaming toddler phase.

Shuuuun!!! I buy almost everything online now due to similar issues...

The issue with the BO and attitudes is only exagerrated because we live in hot, humid (think real tropics) North Queensland, AUS.

I look at it this way;

Poor hygiene is a sign of no self-respect which then leads to of course not respecting the game shop and in turn not respecting other customers to said game shop. The problem with the place I have crossed off my list, is that it appears that the owner is perfectly fine with the conditions of his store and this overall attitude.

Hopefully will be able to stop by my favorite place this weekend, although an hour and half away.

What's will all the people who don't know how to bathe? Every damn gaming store in San Antonio has at least 1-2 people who stink like pigs. Without fail.

And it doesn't help that all of them also sell anime crap and run card game tournaments all the time. Everyweekend some Yu-Gi-Oh punk jacks something from another Yu-Gi-Oh punk.

I am thankful that my gaming stores are not like that I have three GW's all about 30 minutes away and a few other smaller gaming store but all well kept and sorry for your pain. But I would find somewhere else for modeling stuff maybe a craft store.

We have two LGS's here. The one I favor carries mostly GW and is clean with generally friendly staff while the other carries PP and is frequented by prickish, clique-ish people and is run by a guy who seems overly put upon when you go to make a purchase. The 'other' store is one of the reasons I sold all of my warmachine stuff

Judging by your info I could make a few guesses; Hastur games? Endzone? Dragon's Keep?

Priceless.

I believe that what WarOne is getting at is that there's a much better translation of 40k to computer out there than Vassal called Dawn of War.
