If you're after the cheapest, get a cardboard box and put some foam in there. Or bubble wrap. Whatever floats your boat. I had (and still have) a toolbox that I lined in bubble wrap, then glued pluck foam to the sides and its my ork vehicle carrier.
If you're trying to protect your models well, then pick up a customized battlefoam case.

Someone (reecius?) just put up a thread about their battlefoam bag, and realized that the foams fit "perfectly" into a "legal box", which just appears to be a carboard box you could pick up from office depot or the like. I am thinking of looking into this solution a lot more closely when I get home.

This is an excellent idea. This way you can buy the foam and have your mini's protected and save up to get the actual battlefoam case later if you choose. Be aware though that battlefoam foam isn't exactly cheap. To fit 2k of troops you will easily spend $100 on the foam from them.
If you are looking for dirt cheap, grab an old tool box and get cheap some sheets. The protection is so so, but it will only cost you about $30-$40.

Cheapest way would be to buy a toolbox or similar case, and some foam seperately, provided you can fix the foam firmly to the walls of the case, no problem!
I use kaiser rushforth - basically you can buy card or aluminium boxes filled with trays of various depths (pick and pluck or 40 troop compartments etc) the idea being you can take trays out and put them in the hard case for transport, while the card boxes stay in your closet. Or just lug stuff around in the card cases, which should be fine if you don't knock them around too much. Not really that cheap, but significantly better than GW's cases. I hear a lot of stuff about this battlefoam company, but I get the impression that they sell really expensive but really good cases.

I picked up a dozen or so of each of the two sizes of Mantic cases a week or two back. They're definitely the cheapest & lightest solution. I don't think they offer the kind of protection that GW boxes do, so personally I'd only use them for plastic minis (which tend, I find, to be both more robust & less prone to paint chipping than metal ones). But you can fit like 16 or so space marines in a 25mm case, or a couple of landspeeders in a 50mm case.

The Sabol Trays fit perfectly into a comic book box.

If you want a KR case they are cheaper from retailers rather than KR itself.
I bought one of their metal cases with foam for £32 (I think) from Wayland Games.
Really good case and very secure. Once you have a bag/box sorted then the foam that you put in it doesn't really matter too much. BF/Outrider/Sabol/KR it all behaves the same once its in the box.

The cheapest and largest way to trasport minis?
Gun case.
http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Protector-Double-Gun-Case/dp/B000P431BG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1285349841&sr=1-4
Those things will hold an entire army.
Problem is, they get stolen all the time because someone thinks it has a gun in it.
I love my Battlefoam bags, they are amazing, but not cheap.
Yes, you can fit the trays though in a legal box, which indeed is a cardboard box from officedepot. You can get 10 of them for $16.
Also, you can get a metal tool box, magnetize the models and then stick them in the toolbox. That works really well and is very space efficient. Cheap, too.
Also, check out the thread about battlefoam, Menelker has a link in there on how to make your own foam transports cheap.

Gun cases are not a problem at all, used them for years. Since so few people have guns no-one thinks it's a gun case. Most people assume it's an instrument. I have a rifle case that cost £25 - holds 14 rhino chassis.

Yeah, I see people fit entire armies into rifle cases. They are pretty dang secure, too. Egg crate foam on both sides, hard plastic exterior.

Checkout the sportsman's gun center, they often have good deals. Just remember that they aren't very deep - land raiders, battlewagons, drop pods are a problem.

As other have said, KR are great at £22 per card case including shipping, and you get your choice of foam loadout. They hold an awful lot more than a GW case. Plus, they're based in the UK. I'm not sure if you have as much choice when you order from other retailers, but if you order off the KR site you can pick a custom loadout of foam for only your army. Their site is a bit confusing, but basically, you get 100mm of space in a box, and they do trays in either 25mm, 50mm, 33mm, or 66mm depths. Each tray can be - Pre-cut with 40 Space-Marine sized spaces - Pre-cut with 36 slightly bigger sized spaces - Pick and pluck with 60 smaller infantry spaces (good for metal Guardsmen, Skeletons, etc), but obviously pick and pluck means customisable however you want - Weird railway size slots

More complicated than that! There's also two styles of pick-and-pluck and a big range of pre-cut for a variety of game systems.

lol well of course if you want just eggshell foam. In australia we have a foam and rubber store. If you want you can just buy a container and a lot of that foam. They can cut it to size as well. I was thinking he wanted individual pockets...

yeah, it is rather weird, i am thinking about using the Kaiser case to carry my warmachine product, and since 40 K would have more models i am thinking of buying a large case then fill them with foams, kaiser can go to my backpack and i can just carry the case by my own, is Sabol good?
