I don't listen to much of the popular stuff. I listen to alternative rap/old school stuff like Jay Electronica, J. Cole, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, the Roots, Nas, Eminem (just his first 3 albums), Busta Rhymes (his early stuff), Rakim, Naughty by Nature, CL Smooth, The Fugees, etc.

It's hit and miss with me. I like some rap and hip hop.

But I swear to God if I hear one more person mention Nicki fething Minaj, I will sacriface a virgin soul to exact my revenge.

I see people like my last option.

@BB Lucifer, that's pretty funny.

I think everyone can appreciate some of it though. Young Money and Lil'Wayne are by no means representive of the entire genre.

It's kind of like saying Dragonforce represents all of metal.

Man! The hating on Dragonforce! That's twice today, someone on dakka has bashed dragonforce. Yeah, they're suckish, but it's not like they are the worst of the worst.

Tell me Nicki doesn't kill that. She has potential, but she probably will never use it. Not that it matters, outside of Lauryn Hill, female rappers are slept on like pillows.

They're ok. I don't follow hard rock/metal enough to know what's crappy. To me, most of it would fall into the category of decent with a few songs/artists being good.

A lot of the stuff I listen to also is against all the gangsta, mysgonistic BS. But they tend to still follow the clothing styles, though not as extreme.

Which is how I feel about a lot of modern rock. I can appreciate the talent that goes into it even if it's not something I'm going to go out and listen to.

It's an epic idea. And, with the way fake limbs are getting, you could run around calling yourself Edward Elric Might have to grow a ponytail first though.

I will admit listening to one or two songs of Rap, but those are mostly the "joke" music that you don't take seriously anyway. Like

So according to this newly discovered *to me* information. The Gangsta rap is persay a sub genre of rap?

One of the best D&D campaigns I ever played in was based entirely on the music of Dragonforce.

------

I like a lot of old school hip hop, but I think that once MTV popularized rap and started marketing it for a white audience, it ruined the whole rap industry. It basically became about white network execs selling a product of stereotyped black criminality to white suburban kids who want to rebel without rebelling. All pimps up, hos down, and anyone with anything else to offer marginalized to the point of invisibility. Only white rappers (Eminem, Beastie Boys) being allowed to break out of the gangstas and benjamins ghetto.

Here's some of my favorites: Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Del the Funky Homosapien, Kool Keith (especially as Dr. Octagon), The Ultramagnetic MCs, KRS-One/Boogie Down Productions, Afrika Bambata, anything the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA has ever touched.

Yep. Gangsta rap didn't get started until after NWA got big. Tupac and Biggie popularized it. There's alternative, 'conscious', old school (most of which doesn't really fall into a genre), hip-pop (mainstream crap), crunk, hyphy, and others.

Yes, completely.

Gangsta rap really begins with NWA, which is where Flava Flav and Dr. Dre come from, and hence begat Snoop Dogg and that whole line of descent, with other producers rising up to get in on the act. Because gangsta rap appeals most strongly to white suburban kids, the most money is to be made in gangsta rap -- but that by no means discounts the legitimate street cred of gangsta rap. There is a whole subculture, strongly associated with gang culture, of gangsta rap.

But rap in general is a subset of hip-hop -- which includes everything from graffiti tagging styles, to break dancing, to clothing, etc. And hip-hop is way bigger than gangsta rap.

There is a whole lot of rap that is basically very light and funny, with mellow beats and playful rhythms. Sort of the polar opposite of gangsta. Will Smith, the Fresh Prince (and later the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, got his start as a rapper. And he has always been exactly as bubble-gum clean as you would expect from the sort of work he's done professionally. His work is mostly fairly comedic, with lots of songs about failed attempts to hook up with girls, and delusions of being able to fight Mike Tyson:

And then you have politically oriented rap, often from a black power perspective, such as Public Enemy and KRS-1, which often dealt critically with crime and urban life but didn't celebrate it, was antagonistic towards authority -- especially white authority. Try to follow the lyrics in this rant about the brutality and racism of white police:

And then, like any genre, you have the guys who are doing stuff that is just weird, or as its usually called when its music, experimental. One of my favorites from this genre is Keith Thorton, a guy who not only changes his sound every album, he changes his entire identity. This is from 1996's Dr. Octagonecologyst, in which he adopts the identity of Dr. Octogon, a demented alien who has come to Earth to practice bizarre alien experiments on unsuspecting Earthlings:

Damn, that was awesome. At first I was mostly annoyed by the looping choir vocal, which doesn't work with his delivery, but the switch-up around 2:30 caught me off guard, and I really got hooked.

At 6:06 he makes the same point I made about the commercialization of rap.

I dislike it, but only because it doesn't make any sense, as opposed to metal which is mostly just hacks with no talent banging instruments around.

Edit: Whoops, rambled about pop for a moment there.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Listen to the lyrics and most songs make sense. (not saying that all do, but the well written ones are)

I like some rap, not all. I do like oldschool rap and hilltop hoods:

I said a hip hop the hibbe
the hibbe to the hip hip a
hop and ya don't stop
a rock on the baby bubba to
the boogety bang
bang the boogie to the boogie beat. love it.

I don't really care for rap or pop as a genre one way or another. Like most genres it has good and bad aspects (though I would argue bad outwieghs good in some areas). I honestly couldn't name a rap song that I liked until I came across this one, then I figured "Hey, they can't all be bad". Better than metal.

That was a great tune alb, i dont think ive ever laughed so much in my life.

I agree with Bill Cosby, i think rap music is not just awful to listen too but it genuinelly contributes to fething the world up.

I would rather listen to pretty much anything else...

Lets see.. id rather hear Jazz music, Folk, Blues, pop, dance, heavy metal, the sound of my house burning down, my dog yelping as it burned to death....

Yeah pretty much anything.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
