I've got a full copy of Warhammer Quest that remains one of my favorite games. I painted all the characters and a few of the monsters when it first came out, but I never got around to finishing them. Looking at the figures last week, I decided to make painting everything I have for the game my long term "in-between projects" project. The figures are pretty diverse and alot of fun to paint, so when I need a break from slogging through a 40k army(at my usual snail's pace), I'll jump back for a few of these guys. Given my typical painting pace, they should be done by 2030.

The first picture(the Wizard) is an example of where the figures stand before the project- very basic paints with little to no highlights, sloppy edges, and no basing.

The next two(the Elf and Bretonnian Questing Knight) are completed and painted to the standard to which I hope to paint every figure in the set.

And finally, a few bases I've done for my next figures to be repainted(the Wizard and Pit Fighter). I'm doing all the bases with scraps of plasticard from other projects. They're painted in a generic stone dungeon tile theme with a few decorative "dungeon detritus" tidbits.

Very nice work.
One minor criticism:
Not sold on the ranger's eyes, he seems to have extremely diluted pupils...

Your bases look excellent btw.

Thank you, I'm very happy with the results. I've tried several methods before to get nice dungeon style bases, but this is the first that's worked well for me(and conveniently, the easiest)

Finished up two more the last few days, the Wizard and Pit Fighter. The Wizard's a vast improvement from before, but I still might go back and touch up the arms- I'm just not completely satisfied with the look of his flesh. Those old plastics tend to be pretty smooth and his arms are featureless- I kinda freehanded the shading of muscles(with a subpar final result). In comparison, though, the Pit Fighter has great looking flesh- much easier to do with a more defined figure.

Next up: The Trollslayer

Trollslayer finished. Didn't have much to do- I was pretty happy with the flesh & hair I'd done before, so he just needed touch ups and a new base to look good.

Finished the Elf Ranger. This was one I was pretty happy with from before, but I've been trying to get each paint job as close as I can to the source art on the character card, so I had to make some changes. I thought they would be minor color tweaks, but it ended up being almost a full repaint.

Also below, a very quick monster job I did. I've had a painted undead spirit host I wanted to split up into individual bases for years but never got around to. I gave each a dungeon base and washed and re-drybrushed two(the red & green ones) to differentiate them.
From my playing experience, I've found it to be very covenient if the monsters of the same type are easily differentiated. So, all my monsters either have different colors, different weapons, or different gear to quickly identify individuals. Play goes much faster when you can say "Move my guy next to the red ghost" or "I'm attacking the skeleton with the axe". The "cow minotaur" has even gained his own notoriety.

But then, he's an elf after all... Back in those days, they still had there "flower & perfume & cutie pointy ears" feel to them, so they must've be high most of the times... Hence the dilated pupils...

Agreed on the bases though!!!

Yes, I hope to. I've got all the availabe character packs(except the mail order only Halfling Thief and Kislevite Shaman- if anyone has them complete, tell me what it'll take to get you to part with them!) and both the Undead and Orc expansions. Also, I've got a bunch of assorted fantasy figures I plan to rebase & touch up for this project.

Here's an explaination of the process I use to make my dungeon tile bases.

1. Cut some pieces of plasticard/sheet styrene to a size that fits your base in a style or pattern you like. I've used .060" thick plasticard here, but any thickness will do. I've found that using card pieces that differ slightly in thickness has a nice effect(say one piece .060 and another .040).
2. Roughly cut along the edge of the tile where the pieces will meet. Notice the angle of the cut.
3. You can see here both pieces cut along their meeting edges.
4. Use the tip of your knife to carve some chips or gashes into the tiles. I've also carved a crack into the stone here.
5. Add any kind of small decorations or debris at this point. I've used super glue gel to apply a bit of fine gravel. Another nice technique I like is glueing a little sand in the crack to simulate thick fungus or moss. You may want to test the position of the figure you plan to use on the base- if you put on too much debris, the fig may not fit nicely.
6. Once it's to your liking, prime the tile black.
7. Drybrush with a dark grey.
8. Drybrush with light grey
9. Finally, add some finishing touches. Paint any debris or decorations you've attached. I've washed my debris with a bit of Devlan Mud, and also put a few dabs of this on a couple small spots (don't go nuts, just a little to add some character). If I had put on some "sand fungus", I'd wash that with green.

Rats! Giant rats- the set came with 12 of them that I never got around to painting until now. I did a simple paint job on them, nothing fancy. I've decided not to do individual tile bases for the figures that came with bases attached(rats, bats, and snotlings). It just seems a bit tedious and I really don't want to risk damaging them cutting them away. They're the ultimate fodder in the game and don't really show up for fights past level 3, but I still wanted them to look good on the table.

In keeping with the scattershot nature of this project, I've jumped over to doing some board pieces.
My plan is to costruct plasticard board sections to duplicate every board section from the core box and two supplements. Each section will have removable 3-D decorations matching the features of the original game pieces. Where tiles were drawn multi-level, my new tiles will be actually multi-level. For some rooms(I'm especially thinking of the Fighting Pit here), this will pose particular difficulties. Hopefully, by starting with simpler rooms, my skills will be adequate for the challenge.
After much consideration, I've decided to paint all the tiles for the set the same grey color scheme. This is for two reasons. First, I think one color will make for a more unified look of the set and add to the feel. Second, by keeping the colors more generic(and having the 3-D features removable), I should be able to utilise these tiles for other games and general RPG use.

Below, you can see my first two finished sections: a corridor and the Monster Lair dungeon room. The bedding is mounted on a thin piece of styrene.
Also, the unpainted first objective room(I think it's called The Tomb). The stone coffin is removable.

Warhammer Quest was a board game based on the Warhammer Fantasy universe originally released in the mid-90's. The game was played on modular card tiles, with a dungeon being built as the characters moved forward(either randomly or in a manner predetermined by a game master). The rules were such that it could be run with or without a game master(or even solo). There were simple one-off game rules and an "adventure book" for long campaigns which included lots of optional rules. The Adventure Book also contained stats for using nearly every monster and evil creature GW made figures for at the time(and a bunch they didn't). GW produced two campaign supplements(Undead & Orcs, both of whicg introduced new floor tiles and monsters) and several character packs.

The game was basically a prettied up version of HeroQuest. Several modern games have borrowed heavily from the HeroQuest/Warhammer Quest template(including Descent, Castle Ravenloft- heck, 4th ed D&D is more like Warhammer Quest than original D&D). Not to say WHQ was the first, or even the best, but the versatility of the game, simplicity of the rules, and overall replayability have caused it to remai popular despite being nearly 15 years out of print.

Oh yea, I'm loving that Objective Room! Any chance for a tutorial or something on how to make that?? We're doing WHQ with standard/custom classes as well, and that would be fantastic, to start converting our rooms like you've done!

For the plasticard tiles, did you use any sort of "patterened" tile? Or just straight flat and scarred/filed it into shape?

For the tiles, I did it the hard way- I cut individual squares from a plasticard sheet and glued them onto the plasticard base. I'm taking pictures of every stage of the section I'm working on now- I'll write it up when I finish painting it(probably early next week).

Thanks for all the compliments- these tiles are the part of the project I've been looking forward to(and dreading) the most.

Finished off my first objective room- The Tomb. Below are some pics, including a side-by-side with the original card tile. I made some changes to encourage playability(and simplicity). The steps here(and in the rest of the dungeon going forward) have been reduced to one large step per square. It would have looked cooler if done more realisticaly, but I'd rather have a space a figure can easily rest upon. As for the coffin; since I didn't have a figure that would work as a nice bas-relief of a warrior for the top, I used a bronzed sword and shield instead. I think it looks nice and conveys the idea of a resting place of a revered warrior very well.

Here's a breakdown of how I've been building my 3-D textured tiles for Warhammer Quest.

1. Measure out a piece of plasticard(I use 0.080" thick) to the size you want the section to be. Also cut the number of squares you want to cover the room. I make these tiles 3 cm squares- this is a good size when using square GW bases for play, as it allows for a little breathing room for your minis. Remember to leave enough of a border to connect the rooms, either with clips or the WHQ doors.

2. I trim the edges of each tile and add a little weathering(carved cracks, scrapes, etc.). I try to keep each one unique and non-uniform.

3. Dry fit all the tiles on the section. I also mark the corners- this helps to line the tiles up evenly.

4. I like to cut a few of the tiles before glueing them in place to make the floor look more worn & cracked.

5. For this room, I glued a bit of sand into some of the cracks. I'll paint this sand green to simulate mold. I also glued on some small stones to use as mushrooms.

6. Spray prime with flat black.

7. After taping over the black border, I drybrush the entire section- first with dark grey, then with light grey.

8. The fully painted room.
