If you really think about it, if STC machines and templates were so essential to the survival of mankind, why didn't they keep backups on Terra or Mars? Were I the Emperor I would have kept such a thing beneath my very throne.

STCs were ancient history by the time the Emperor united Terra and began the crusade.
prior to the IoM, humanity had been a hodge podge group of different political entities.
there were likely hundreds of human empires that rose and fell throughout the Dark Age of technology.
STCs were also machines given to colonists to allow them to survive on any newely settled planets.
after a few hundred years, a colony probably didn't need to print off any new blueprints because they had everything they needed and the STCs would be left to fall into disrepair.
STCs weren't needed on Terra or Mars as they were fully developed planets with pre-existing industry and technical knowhow.
because humanity wasn't all on the same page, there wasn't a central authority to decide 'Hey, we should keep an STC running in case something terrible happens"

Well i think the point was that they were lost before the Emperor came to power, during Old night when warpstorms ravaged and isolated the human colonies and aliens prayed upon humanity in its weakened state. However you're right they should've taken backups but you know how it is, creating a backup disk can be done at any time we can always make one tomorrow.

I don't think even the Inquisition could take anything the Fabricator General didn't want them to have.
the Mechanicus is powerful. they have just as much power as the IoM actually has.

and so is the Ad Mech fleet hovering over Mars proper. even more exotic planet based weaponry to blast battlecruisers out of the sky.

it was there that Arch Magos Land found the designs for the Land Raider and land speeder. he vanished on his last delving into the Noctus.

Land Raiders and Speeders being named after an Arch Magos is quite possibly one of the very worst facepalm moments, even for the generally low standard Space Marines already set.

this was before Space Marines.
the Imperial Army was using Land Raiders when the Emperor united Terra.
the Emperor then declared that all Land Raiders were to be given to the newely created Astartes legions for their exclusive use.

It's more or less SM related fluff at this point (being a footnote in the history of two of their vehicles), and even if it weren't, saying it's bad even by the low standards Space Marine fluff sets wouldn't necessarily require it to be directly related, since it's just using them as a baseline for comparison.

the Land Raider wasn't a space marine vehicle at that point.
the Magos found it and named it after himself. whats so bad about that?
no one's complaining that the Lemun Russ was named after you know who, or that the Malcador heavy tank was named after Malcador?

Considering "Land Speeders" are quite blatantly landspeeders, the whole "named after Magos Land" thing is just a silly footnote... It's not even the funny kind of silly, it's just sort of a moment.

If Sentinels were called AT- STs and said to be named after "Magos At", then yes, I would.
Imagine if Drop Pods were supposed to have been named after "Magos Drop" or power armor named after "Magos Power"...

They probably kept backups on Terra and Mars of all STC ever build. But, taking into consideration all the wars that happened before Emperor united Mankind...
I say that all backups where accentually destroyed by someone, and what's left is taken by the Emperor for safekeeping.

I take it none of you have heard of the "Land Camera" either?
Edwin Land's first commercial camera. He went on to found Polaroid (now Lexmark). The naming convention from 40k came from this.
It's a longer and more deeply placed in-joke, but it is still there. Like the "Commodore 64" in BFG.
