This is still a problem?!?

I was freakin halfway through Dead Space 2 Hard Core (Hardest difficulty, can only save three times) when my Xbox RRoDed! I was hopping to beat it on my 3 day weekend!

This is going to be my fifth freakin Xbox 360..... Does the PS3 have this sort of problem?!?

DAMNIT!

It only happened to one 360 of mine. Maybe you're just unlucky? =P

But yeah, PS3 has similar. Google "Yellow light of death".

Yet the PS3's YLOD only affects 10% of the consoles, where the 360 has about a 60% failure rate for the RROD.

@Slarg232: Yep it is still a problem. They never bothered to fix the issue because people are content with a 3 year warranty that replaces one junk part with a new junk part. The warranty pretty much turns your 360 into a refurbished machine and if suffers from the same problem you are SOL.

This "junk days of technology" is really getting on my nerves. I have had one RROD and a few YRODs. My NES, Sega, Atari, and SNES still work great. My dad's first cell phone (an ancient paragon wyrm nokia) still works, yet I was reading an article the other day that said the iphones are designed to fail after a few years so you will upgrade.

This makes me really love my PC. Take care of it and use good AV software and it'll generally be easier to fix any problems that might come up.

This. I had my previous 360 from the launch date until it finally red ringed around the time Modern Warfare 2 released. Microsoft actually replaced it with the MW2 console, no less.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Grats Slargy! You're 54% of Xbox 360 owners!

Makes me glad I only got a PS3 that I barely ever use because Keyboard+Mouse still wins.

I really want to know what these 54% of Xbox 360 owners are doing to their machines to cause the RRoD.

It's caused by overheating internal components, most notably by just plopping it down anywheres there's not enough ventilation.

My 360 was sat next to... Nothing. It was just out with about 18 inches of free space either side when it was in use.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

How he treats it matters little - the design is the problem, for the exact same reason as cheap-arsed Dell motherboards. I don't work for them any more so I'll say what I damned well want!

If it heats up and cools down enough times under certain conditions, it will fail. Third party cooling solutions actually do very little, and can exacerbate the problem for simply being too efficient! I blame Europe's lead restrictions, but I also don't care 'cos I don't have one.

Here's some related humour to cheer you up.

That's how mine has sat ever since I got it.

Anyway, I guess I am going to have to mail it to Microsoft now..... Wonder if I can get them to upgrade mine to a Elite?

My 360 has NEVER RRoD'd. It sits between my PS2 and my TV and is frequently left on for 12-30 hours at a time.

Just for note, I own the green Halo 3 edition 360.

I had this, it RR'd about a month after Black Ops came out. I just went and bought a new one with the wireless internet.

I have one of the launch consoles and I've never RRoD. I wouldn't be shocked to learn I have one of the last 1st Gen 360's still in operation at this point XD.

Far as I know the problem that commonly caused RRoD was solved with the 3rd generation of 360's which would have been around 2009 (I think not really sure).

From what the press release said back then, the green Halo 3 style was the first 3rd gen released. It's why I splurged for it.

Oddly enough, thats the number I'm on....

Sounds Like I am waiting for after the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out to see if this sort of thing is going to happen down the road with it. If it does, I guess I go from PS2 to Xbox 360 to PS4.....

Though having to replace 3 consoles per household has to have put a dent in M$'s wallet, so hopefully they proof check it better next time.

I bought a 360 when they launched and it was a plague. I had to send it out after a measly 2 months of play. Got the replacement and it RROD against a few months later. I got sick of it and sold it off and stuck with a PS2/xbox for the longest of times. It gave me plenty of time to catch up on older games. I bought a PS3 awhile back, and I play the hell out of it. I too read an article that showed the failure rates of the modern systems. Wii was 1st with like 7% failure, then PS3 with a smidge over 10% and yea, sadly the 360 was in the 50s or 60s. I mean, why the hell do people put up with that? All you 360 owners did was show that no matter how big a pile of gak they make, your just going to throw your money at them.

I have an Atari 2600 that still works, a SNES that in a drunken stupor tossed out of a 2nd story window onto concrete, and it still works. I had an original xbox from launch that lasted up until I sold that a couple years ago. I dont get why current consoles are so damned fragile. But a big help IS keeping them cool. I have a computer fan installed on the side of my entertainment stand where the consoles are and set it to suck out the hot air. Works fantastically, even my PS3 stays nice and cool

I'm on my second 360, the first was covered by the three year extended warranty thing that Microsoft put on all the early consoles to stop people storming their offices with pitch forks and torches.

However my current one seems to have trouble reading recognizing that there is even a disk in the tray... no money to replace it though.

I still have my limited edition GOLD n64 (I have to say it like that every time I mention it lol)
And it still works, other than the classic 'have to flick the off/off switch a couple times before it actually loads the game' glitchy thing, but I'm not sure if thats the game/ n64's fault...

I got RRoD once, and I figured out it may have been because I didn't push the power chuck in ALL the way to the xbox, and if you don't, it gets RRoD until you push it in all the way.
However, I had an Elite so I got it replaced for free. (extended warranty ftw)

Actually, that's not the whole truth.

We each get a free Xbox 360 every time it happens, and if it happens for 50% of us once, that's alot of money M$ just lost replacing Consoles, not selling them. Some of us on our fourth, fifth, or even sixth Xbox 360 have cost them a whole lot more. One can only hope that this has sent a clear messege to M$ that they need to do a better job making it or they are going to lose money from having such a "loyal fanbase"

As for why, it's for two reasons, really:

1) I have alot of games for it, twenty eight to be exact. I don't really want to throw that away.

2) My friends play on it, meaning I have to stay if I don't want to pwn all the noobzorz by myself.

My understanding has always been that there was a hardware flaw in Gen 1 and 2 360's that commonly resulted in RRoD that was solved with the 3rd wave. I don't think that was intended to say RRoD completely disappeared.

I would have believed it if 60% of the consoles still didn't fail. There has been no change in their failure rate since day one. If they solved one problem causing the RRoD then they must have caused it with something else. To me that sounds more like "Crap we have millions of this part that is causing the system to fail. How about instead of fixing the problem, we just use these same parts when we fix it and hope out patch job holds up until are three year warranty is up?"

If anything the first gen consoles had less of a failure rate anyways. Every time I see one of these threads, I see a lot of people saying "I have a first gen 360 and it still works!"

I got a 360 and I like the games on it, but I barely play it because I will not buy another one. I use it for 360 exclusives and everything else I buy on the PS3.

There's many versions of the xbox but yeah the older the much greater chance of RROD. Of the launch ones I'm sure there's like 3 left on the planet that haven't RRODed yet.

Im surprised theres ANY 1st launches left. Mine was a first launch, and that bitch red ringed all the time. I got lucky in the fact that it never was the one that just KOed the system. But having it crash 5 or 6 times a game was incredibly irritating

Mines never RRoD'd. It's because I give it love and respect but occasionally I give it a good beating so that it knows whose boss

Did you find a bit of wood to knock on after typing that? If not you probably just jinxed it and it will RRoD tomorrow.
