One day I was listening to System of a Down in my car and thought: I need to listen to a different band! So without further ado, any dakkites have some metal bands which I probably didn't hear already to offer?
edited so it makes a bit more sense

You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O
May the the blessings of His Grace the Emperor tumble down upon you like a golden fog. (Only a VERY select few will get this reference. And it's not from 40k. )
I second Iced Earth. Therion is pretty good too, but a lot of their newer stuff is a bit Dandy-esque. The Slayer Albums from the 80s and early 90s are pretty good too. But they get pretty redundant after 2000. That said, their last album 'World Painted Blood' was pretty good. If you like Stoner Doom Metal, Sleep is pretty good. Arch Enemy before Angela Whatsherface became the singer is great. Her stuff is good too, but the early stuff like Burning Bridges is fantastic. 70s 'Metal' or hardrock is good too. Budgie, Diamondhead, etc.
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Slayer, Metallica and Motorhead are some of the more obvious and well known choices.

A lot of good stuff has already been mentioned, I shall add: Pantera, Down & Nevermore
Pantera was one of the finest metal bands of the early 90's and stuck their fingers in the eyes of grunge. I really miss Dime (RIP)
Down is leftovers of Pantera, eyehategod, and Corrosion Of Conformity, they are definitely Stoner Metal as they have a song called "Hail The Leaf". I first got exposed to them when I went to a Metallica concert and they were one of the openers. Their music can range from raging to absolutely chill.
Nevermore is awesome, you will not be disappointed. They're speed + melodic + exotic scales and harmonies. One of the best bands around that NO ONE is talking about.
Catachan LIX "Lords Of Destruction" - Put Away
1943-1944 Era 1250 point Großdeutchland Force - Bolt Action
"The best medicine for Wraithlords? Multilasers. The best way to kill an Avatar? Lasguns."
"Time to pour out some liquor for the pinkmisted Harlequins"
I used to be a big fan of Pantera, but I got sick of groove metal as it seems like a toned down version of thrash metal that focuses on the groove of the instruments rather than the speed.
Hmm,some pretty good bands on the list...I'll add Sepultura,HateBreed and Anthrax...and a few crossover bands as well....D.R.I,Agnostic Front,Cro-Mags,S.O.D and Celtic Frost...
Also, just for SAGs,...W.A.S.P...becuase any band that releases a song titled F*** like a Beast belongs on a "good" Metal Band list...

Yeah that's how I feel as well, but metal or not I have yet to be impressed by them.
...You need more cowbell ?
Can't stand that song ((Don't Fear) the Reaper), it's too slow and soft for me.
It's all in the context in which you listen to it and what you relate it back to....I can't listen to Don't fear the Reaper with out the original Halloween film coming to mind...
In much the same way that "Freebird" is now (for me) permently linked to the final scene in The Devils Rejects...

I enjoy "Freebird" quite a bit actually, haven't really heard enough Lynyrd Skynyrd to form an opinion on them though.

Basically every song they do is about a battle or war. This one is about D-Day, 1942.
After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.
I actually like Lynyrd Skynard quite a bit,saw them live back in the late 80's early 90's and thought they put on a damn good show..very bluesy southern rock...not every ones taste...but not bad at all.

BOC is the original metal band.
....Hmm...Black Sabbath will be surprised to hear that.
