They're really more Prog/hard rock, though. Speaking of the so-bad-its-amusing movie Heavy Metal, it does have a couple of good songs on the soundtrack (VotPW is the best), but also has Journey and hair metal.

...The cartoon band..????
It's kind of absurd how good it is. The cartoon is made by serious metal-lovers, who also play very well and write darn good tunes which just happen to have lyrics which fit into each show.

I'm seriously going to have to watch this show....I've seen it...but never really paid much attention to it..
As for the "Heavy Metal" sound track...with the exception of Black Sabbaths the Mob Rules...I didn't hear any "Heavy Metal" on the whole album ...

Yeah, even for 1981 (thirty years, now!), it's pretty sad. I would also tend to say Nazareth's "Crazy (a suitable case for treatment)", Cheap Trick's "I Must be Dreamin'", and Riggs' "Radar Rider" are at least borderline metal, for the period. But that's still most of the album non-metal. The Soundtrack and the movie are cheesy classics, though.

By today's standards they would be hard rock. Their early work (first 3 albums) is really a mixture of various styles.
A good classic sound that is beloved by most everyone, Iron Maiden. Accept, and an excellent band that did a great cover of a classic Accept song:
I have also enjoyed a bit of Nile. They do an excellent "Mars Bringer of War" renamed as "Ramses Bringer of War" (fitting their egyptian theme).
I am surprised however, to not see Dimmu Borgir in here. As a power metal band, Dream Theater isn't half bad. for a folk type metal sound, there is also Eluveitie.
Since you say you have been listening to System for some time now, you should check out Scars on Broadway. Its formed of some of the former system members (i think its everyone except for serj)

...Yep.I remember when the film came out, thinking how "cool" it looked...but not being able to go see it due to the fact it was R rated and I was 10 or 11 at the time..
I,amusingly enough, received the soundtrack as a gift (because I "Liked Heavy Metal Music") two years before I ever got to see the film...(which I did enjoy very much) ,and ,as you pointed out ,discovered the soundtrack to be more "rock" than Metal....
....Of course at the time,I was not aware that the film (and all the segments within) were based on the content of an already existing magazine...

I got my hands on a few issues of the magazine when I was a teenager. Awesome stuff, some of it. Especially the earlier stuff with more imports. The French original (Metal Hurlant) was pretty groundbreaking. Saw the movie later, and even as a kid saw it as a juvenile knockoff, but it's still fun.

Most definitly...when the film is compared to it's source material it is left "wanting"....but like you, I also found it to be a fun movie....The "trial of Captain Stern" and John Candy as the ..."Needy" robot where two high points for me,as was the B-17 segment.

Back in the days of arena rock BOC had the best light show ever.
Should you be curious about the BOC / is it metal question, look for an album of theirs called ME262. It never got much radio time but its full of awesome.
Here's a list of bands to avoid as they either suck(ed) or posed as metal bands
Poison
Cinderella
Warrant
Winger
Mr.Big (They're still huge in Japan now despite bringing the suck)
Extreme
Kingdom Come (These guys were the ultimate Zeppelin Cover band - they copied Zep to a 'Z')
Nelson
Slaughter
Skid Row
If you wanted to get a girl in the late 80s/early 90s to augment your manly high school 'stache you had to listen to this crap and even go see them live! But, it was totally worth it (Thanks Amanda C! I'm still smiling 20 years later)
From the same era, but actually good
Exodus
Pro-pain
Ratt (well...50/50)
Saxon
Agnostic Front
Nuclear Assault
G//Z/R
DRI
DOA SOD
Life of Agony (one album was good, the others meh)
White Zombie (Sexorcisto and Astro Creep are good, but I stopped paying attention after that)
GWAR! (The greatest live show ever! EVER!)
A good rule of thumb is if you can't actually decipher the name of the band by their logo on the cover as it looks like spider man's web with a bunch of inverted crosses or pentagrams, it is probably really lame. Like Immortal. They're totally lame. If there is a really fat guy in the band, they're probably lame too. Unless the fat guy doesn't care that he is fat (Like Billy Milano of SOD/MOD) Make-up = Lame. KISS is the only exception to this rule. They took off the make-up and became lame, but when they put it back on again, presto, lame.
My Top 5
Black Sabbath (First 6 albums and first 2 Dio Albums are great must haves)
Slayer (Everything up to and including Divine Intervention)
Metallica (First 3 albums must haves, Justice is OK - the tour was wicked ass though)
Rainbow (ducking for cover here - Rainbow is Black Sabbath + Deep Purple = Lame name, great tunes IMHO)
Megadeth (Mustaine's voice is a bit too much at times, but he is a totally awesome guitar player)
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

Ahh...But which list should they be on..."Actually good" or "Sucky/Possers"?
...Agree with most of Khornholio's list...especialy GWAR being the greatest live show ever, but Ratt and Skid Row should be on the opposite list IMO...
And why has no one mentioned Loudness yet?

Lock n' loll clazy night! Roudness. haha. Their bassist died of cancer recently in Osaka.
As for Skid Row, 18 and Life made me, at the age of 18, want to make the song prophetic by changing my name to Ricky and kill Sebastian Bach with my heart of stone. Sorry FITZZ, Skid Row was fat chick metal back in the day. I'll give you RATT. I just have some nostalgic feeling when I hear it every so often. In retrospect, they were lame.
@helgrenze I totally forgot about Stryper. But they opened the doors for a lot of Christian Metal, which about 0.0001% of isn't too bad. I have a CD around here somewhere of some Christian Death Metal. All the understandable screaming/grunting is the same as regular Death Metal, so it gets the nod. I remembered that the heavy weight champ of Metal Poserdom is King Kobra. They were the epitome of lamey Cheesiness. Youtube search Iron Eagle King Kobra. You'll see.
Another rule of thumb is that if a famous actor or wrestler is in the band, it ain't metal it's a hobby cash grab. Specifically Ted of Bill and Ted fame and Chris Jericho.

Yeah,I heard about Loudness bassist,shame...I always thought they were pretty damn good.
I suppose I could chalk Skid Row up to " Nostalgia" as well...saw them live decades ago and had a ...very interesting night.. ...but yeah..hair metal is hair metal,I still like 18 and life though..
100% agree about King Kobra as well as bands featuring actors/wrestlers....I saw the Freebirds " Bad Street" video back in 1982 and just stopped laughing about it last week.

Metallica (old stuff), Slayer (everything before 2000 pretty much), Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Pantera, Sepultura, and Black Sabbath are some of my favorites.
As far as Death Metal (if you're into it)...Death, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Bolt Thrower (40k-inspired Death Metal ), Cannibal Corpse, and Deicide are pretty awesome.
I like Morbid Saint they're a pretty hardcore thrash metal band that is pretty obscure (not easy listening in other words) and had only one album "Spectrum of Death". Also the cover looks ridiculous I think they're trying
to look scary but it just turned out looking like Eddie the Head's grandma.

I really tire of the all the "over labelling" of metal and music in general. I think it's a result of people in the industry trying to over complicate everything. If you can bang your head to it, you're on the right track.

People have always said this, yet I have never understood it.
There are clear differences between different sub-genres. It is important to distinguish music from itself for the sake of taste. If I want to find music of a certain variety, the more genres I have to work with, the better.
'Over-complicating' music might be bad from certain perspectives, but homogenizing music is definitely worse. There is absolutely no benefit from doing away with sub-genres. You wouldn't want Metallica to be lumped in with Meshuggah, would you? I didn't think so.
