A lot of these bands are courtesy of Pandora over the years, otherwise I would have no idea they existed .
Ok, this isn't really a band but more of a musical project. Ayreon, by itself, is a huge masterpiece in Metal IMO. It's way too much to explain at once, but it's best to listen to every album that Ayreon has.
Same thing with Star One. It's also a musical project by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. This guy is a musical genius.
I'm surprised not a lot have mentioned
Or
I can't believe I failed to mention: when they're one of my all-time favorites.
I can keep going for a little, but I should stop before I get carried away.
EDIT: Here's modern Megadeth for those that haven't been following them:

People have always said this, yet I have never understood it.
There are clear differences between different sub-genres. It is important to distinguish music from itself for the sake of taste. If I want to find music of a certain variety, the more genres I have to work with, the better.
'Over-complicating' music might be bad from certain perspectives, but homogenizing music is definitely worse. There is absolutely no benefit from doing away with sub-genres. You wouldn't want Metallica to be lumped in with Meshuggah, would you? I didn't think so.
Clear differences? What's the difference aurally between Job For A Cowboy and The Faceless? Nothing.

If you honestly can't tell the difference between The Faceless and Job For a Cowboy, then you really aren't trying hard enough. Let me help you out anyway.
The Faceless often uses odd metre and the occasional polyrythm to defy expectation (By adding a note or series of notes to 'break' 4/4). They are fairly progressive. They make use of Jazz-fusion inspired breakdowns quite often. They have a keyboard player. They sing occasionally. Their production quality is far superior to JFAC (as are the musicians), but that's somewhat irrelevant. This is all very apparent on Planetary Duality.
Job for a Cowboy never strays from basic 4/4 (If it ever sounds like they do, it's still syncopated), and they often make use of basic song structure. They are fairly repetitive, and they have a very limited scope in terms of the scales they use. I hardly ever hear a solo in a JFAC song. Their vocalist makes use of a completely different style of growling/screaming, and they never sing. You really can't call Job for a Cowboy Technical Death Metal in any sense.
If you can't tell the difference between this:
and this:
Then you must be deaf.

And if I cared what time signature they used, I would be a music major, but I'm not.
It's over done either way.

Denominations exist for those of us who do care.
It would be nearly impossible for me to find bands similar to The Faceless if they were carelessly lumped together with bands like Job for a Cowboy. The fact that they fall under a sub-genre of the same type of music doesn't really affect someone who doesn't care, so why does it matter?
Again, sub-genres help to clarify differences for the sake of taste. They don't negatively affect the apathetic in any meaningful way.
