No one mentions BOC to begin with, aside from that more cowbell crap they're forgotten.

Not heavy metal? Their symbol is the alchemical symbol for lead, one of the heaviest of metals.

...I'm not sure how far BOC is remembered beyond the "Cowbell Crap" by current standards...but I grew up listening to BOC (on the radio) and never really considered them a Metal band...but rather a "hard rock" band...(now I'm decending into genre hair splitting)....that's not to say their music isn't good...I'm simply implying that BOC is a different genre than "Heavy Metal".

Also how could no one mention the gos of metal DIO

I did mention Black Sabbath...so Dio was mentioned as he was their front man for some time... (attempt to cover)

...Ok...I should have also mentioned RJD as a solo act...IMO the man had one of the most powerful voices in metal and his passing saddened me.

I have to second Hammerfall

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Just skimmed the thread, and no one mentions Megadeth? (especially Rust in Peace and Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?)

Other than that, Alice in chains is fricking awesome, even though its more of a grunge thing, you should still check it out.

I thought everyone had heard of Megadeth? RIP is essential listening.

I've been listening to a bit of Fates Warning "The Spectre Within" which is a pretty cool album.

Alot of these 'sub-sub' genres as you call them have been around for almost twenty years now. You must be truly ancient FITZZ!

I reckon the OP needs to do some Homework and report back so we can refine the search for metal.

Seeing as You's are all obessed with Old school metal/hard rock here's a song that i personally think has all the awesomeness. (written in 2001 lol)

Is sooo rifftacular and has a pretty good anthemic chorus.

I think it doesn't help that early heavy metal was very similar to hard rock in sound and that Wikipedia classifies Blue Oyster Cult as metal band.

The main reason BOC is considered
Heavy Metal....... this song is on the sound track of the movie.... Heavy Metal.
