I'm trying to make my own space marine chapter and I'm working on a name and paint scheme. I have the paint scheme down and I've narrowed to th names down to Stone Sentinels or Iron sentinels, so which sounds better. If you have any other ideas for names or an opinion on the paint scheme, please comment on them.

Iron all the way! are you going to use the army painter wolf grey primer for your base coats? it'll save you hours of tedious undercoating by brush! like the scheme too, it'll look great when you do it, looking forward to seeing some painted models now!

Yeah, Iron sentinels has more life and is more thought-provoking. Stone sentinels just makes me think of statues.

That's what I was thinking as well. They're supposed to be a defense oriented chapter so I thought statues would give them an air of being forever on guard.

Oh yep, that's some nice imagery with the different name as well, forever on guard, I like that as well! dammit!

What immediately comes to mind for me when I think Stone Sentinels, is the Stone Sentinel Maze of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".

But I like Stone over Iron. Iron seems overused as an adjective for SM chapters, Iron Hands and Iron Warriors immediately come to mind, not to mention there are the Iron Lords, Iron Champions, Iron Fists and Iron Knights are also SM chapters.

Stone also lasts much longer than Iron.

I voted stone. Immovable, like a mountain.

Also, you may want to put some shiny, stand-out colour on their aquilas, or details or whatever, otherwise you may just end up with...grey...

The edging and other metal looking parts are painted silver, but you can't see it in the picture.

I initially voted Iron, but if they're supposed to be more defense oriented, then stone.

Iron does rust and it bends. Stone is eternal ( okok, it isn't. But it tends to last longer than iron ), unbending, unyielding, rough and powerful, archaic and strong.

I prefer Iron Sentinels for 2 reasons: 1: fluff wise, they could be an Iron Hand's successor chapter, and could help make the army seem a bit cooler with backgroun and 2: The color scheme seems much more akin to iron. When I think of stone, I think of a very light and very dull gray.

I was thinking an imperial fist succesor, becaue they're defensive as well, but Iron Hands sound like a good idea too.

Why not Stone Wardens?
Sentinels doesn't seem to fit as well with Stone but Wardens has practically the same meaning and even invoke the image of heavy armour.

I watch a show where the college warden is a small, skinny, gay guy, so wardens doesn't invoke any powerful emotions for me.

Stone Sentinels for the alliteration.

for me the alliteration is a no go...i think iron is also overused but currently i can´t think of another adjective ....

Stone Ghosts.

Iron is forged to do it's purpose where as stone can only be blown apart into bits before it can be molded or used or hewn. I say go with iron for it's use in other chapter names (not to mention you pretty much get an easy choise for what chapter they were formed from). I hear Stone Sentinels and think of something dwarven or of a mining company *shrugs* that's just me though.

I dislike the aliteration... makes it sound a bit cheesy...

How about Sentinels of Iron? Or Sentinels of Stone?

Have to agree with purple on the wardens of stone that does have a nice ring to it

There is to much Iron references in 40, so I vote for Stone! Plus with the stone in the name, you can build fluff around your thunderhammers (stonehammers?)

What about Guardians of Stone, Stone Sentinals doesn't sound right.

"Men of Iron" is a silly name for anything except some colloquial term for a robotic servant.
