Queen ROCKS!!! I gave them a second go and I don't regret that decision but I still think "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" are overrated compared to the contents of Sheer Heart Attack, Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation

I feel I must be the lone dissenting voice here. Always hated Queen. I can't deny their musicianship but I can't stand their music. It might be tantamount to heresy for some but I find Freddie Mercury highly irritating.
Ironic really because one of the first albums to be available on CD when the tech first came out was Queen's Greatest Hits (along with Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms). My dad had a very early CD player so the Queen album got listened to ad infinitum.

Top.
@Cheesecat - Yeah, man. For me it's the early stuff like 'Night at The Opera' that nails it. 'Death on Two Legs'! Come on! That song just ROCKS. Full Stop.
The sad thing is, many folks have just listened to the Greatest Hits albums, and don't realise what they are missing from owning the whole catalogue.
Freddie, is probably one of the only musicians who's passed who I'll stop every so often when a Queen song comes on and ponder just what would he have done if he hadn't been taken so early.
Guy would still be making records now.

"That's not an Ork, its a girl.." - Last words of High General Daran Ul'tharem, battle of Ursha VII.

Standouts for me include their Highlander soundtrack work (which blew my mind as a teenager), and some of the classics like Flash, Bohemian Rhapsody (even though I heard it a million times on classic rock radio growing up), and Stone Cold Crazy.

This may be WHY you find them irritating, Filbert. My parents ruined Bruce Springsteen and U2 for me this way. I didn't get over hating U2 for YEARS, and still don't appreciate Bruce the way I probably should.

You should see a doctor as there is obliviously something wrong with your hearing. And aesthetics. That is ok, Top Gear voted it the greatest driving song ever.

And you need a psychiatrist for your delusional paranoia it would seem.
Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:It is but a pop song. Middle of the Road music lite
If you think that is middle of the road music lite you really don't seem to have much of a basis to be making any judgments as you must not have that broad a knowledge of music or music history.
Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:That is okay if your are into that, nothing wrong whatsoever.
I am into good music, thank you for noticing. That is why I support Dresden and Dresden brand perfumes. (Your Welcome Alby)
Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:As pop songs go it is a good one. But it ain't a masterpiece.
I don't believe anyone used the word masterpiece in relationship to the song. If you haven't been paying attention, this is a thread about the band Queen (google them, it'll blow your mind) and the song I posted is one of their most beloved songs. I was shocked, just shocked and dismayed, to see it hadn't been mentioned yet.
Then there is the trouble that you are contradicting yourself. Either it is a middle of the road pop song that is meek and mild or it is a good one.
Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:My bad, if Top Gear voted it the greatest song ever then it MUST be so!
It wasn't mean to be proof of anything, just a bit of trivia about a Queen song and since this is a Queen thread, it seemed appropriate.

Good grief If you wish to believe in Top Gear polls, and use that as an indication of proof of superior musical judgement then you are clearly deluding yourself.
Sorry but your opinion is not absolute. You have no knowlegde of my musical tastes, preferences or listening history.
You think this song is the greatest thing is perfectly fine. Your choice.
But in comparison with much that I have listened to this song is tame. Again because you seem intent on being beligerent and I don't: That does not mean it is not a good piece of popular music. but any claim that it is the greatest ever, is hyperbole.

There is no way anyone could have read what has been written and reasonably come up with the response that you just wrote. It makes no sense in (and very little out of) the context of the discussion and would require deliberately misreading passages or not reading at all. So either you are just purely trolling or you might need a remedial reading course.

Sort of. But then again I loathe Springsteen and U2 as well
What would you classify as "not" middle of the road, if you don't mind my asking?
As to the topic, I must say that I enjoy Queen quite a bit. Not my favorite band, by far, but I'm always happy when they come on the radio.
Mainly due to Mercury's incredible singing voice, of course.
Also, yes to U2 and no to Springsteen. I'm sorry I just don't get it. Also, while we're on the subject of popular bands that one doesn't get the appeal of, Radiohead just does absolutely nothing for me.
