Hey everyone.

I know you probably think this is quite a random question but I am curious to see what most people think.

So what do you think is the most likely apocalypse to happen? Nuclear, natural disaster, something from space (asteroid, comet, black hole etc), zombie?
Feel free to be more specific on the ones I listed or put down your own thoughts I haven't listed.

I personally think an asteroid or comet is the most likely thing at the minute, with a nuclear armageddon a close second.

In order of likeliness....

1. Mad Max Apocalypse
-Wars over oil combined with massive global warming in addition to leather and motorcycle surpluses create a Mad Max style Apocalypse. Hail Lord Humungus!

2. Nuclear War Apocalypse
-This one is where a war occurs where, unlike the Mad Max one, where only a few nukes are used, hundreds are used and render the environment almost unlivable. The majority of the population lives underground and there are lots of weird mutants and cool gas masks.

3. Zombie Apocalypse
-Due to a combination of our culture's obsession with zombies as well as mass hysteria people become convinced they are zombies and the people they bite become convinced they are zombies as well. Its lasts until some guy who hasn't seen a zombie movie gets bitten and nothing happens to him. Most of the professional "zombie" killers go to jail.

4. Cthulhu
-Now Cthulhu is destined to conquer the world and destroy a lot of stuff, but he's a late sleeper and most likely by the time he wakes up humanity will already be gone and a new race will have risen up (like the intelligent Apes who herd dumb humans and put them in zoos).

5. Asteroid
-Bruce Willis can't save us this time as a massive asteroid hits Earth. Presumably it'll be like a terrible disaster film where the characters try to outrun the shockwave in a car or plane, except this time it wouldn't work. As a result humanity is destroyed except for a single Astronaut on the moon, until he runs out of air.

resources dwindle infrastructure fails is what I see most likely happening. What do you think would happen if all the first world countries lost power for several months? Food shortages and the like is probably likely as well.

Nuclear. We almost blew ourselves up during the cuban missile crisis. If an event like that happens once every century the eventual outcome will be a nuclear apocalypse, because we can only dodge a near miss so many times.

A giant rock falling from space is not even a close 2nd. How long has it been since the last one hit? Divide that number by 100 and try to honestly tell me we could survive that many repeats of the cuban missile crisis

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

almost true. some of us over at the west will not become fat,but it will be so little that no one knows there are survivors so we are isolated until they come and take us over, but we fight back in a small resistance joining in on WWIII

You're assuming that something close to the Cuban Missile Crisis will occur once every century. So far there's no evidence to support that, since then we haven't had any such close calls (even though Nuclear Weapons are pretty much in range of everything now).

The funny thing is, in the event of a Nuclear War, it will be the modernized countries that are hit the hardest. Who's going to bother launching a nuke at Turkmenistan or Kenya?

Whilst the zombies et al are all fun, if this was a serious question I think the answer is tragically and painfully obvious.

Something to do with Israel.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Well, basically I think that the commies are slowly coming around, years back people always thought WW3 would be East vs West, but the Ruskies and the Chinese are unlikely combatants these days. The cold wars over, the Chinese want to be rich, we arent going to be scrapping with them, each other, Europe etc..

But Israel, fought over endlessly looks the most likely. How many people over there are raised from childhood to hate? Pathologically hate and be willing to sit on a bus with pockets filled with explosives and rat poison and blow random civilians up.

Basically tens of millions of people in the middle east would love to see it wiped out, all its gonna take is a wayward nuke, and then epic shitstorm breaks out.

Add to the fact that the mainstay of the main Religions out there basically say "the party only starts when you die" why not?

My moneys not on North Korea or the commies, its on any one of the numerous nations or organisations that doesn't recognise Israel as a state finally getting some WMDs/Nukes and having the bottle to use them.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Realistically it won't be nukes that wipe us out (at least not any time soon). A few years back some people did an investigation into how many nukes we have and how dangerous they are. The idea that we have enough nukes to destroy the planet is false. A nuclear war would make earth a horrible place to live but it wouldn't be enough to destroy humanity. There would still be large areas that we could live in safely and even in radioactive areas people would continue to survive. Lots of people would die and many countries would be completely destroyed but equally many places would be barely affected.

However aside from the idea that we would all die I completely agree with Matty. Lack of fear of death is the major problem IMO. if you believe killing yourself is a good idea nukes become a lot more of acceptable idea.

Most likely I think will be economic breakdown and overpopulation is the biggest cause. Were slowly changing this world into what will be a dystopian future as things are.

I work for a school system and the building my office is in was built in the late 30s with a full on 3 sub level fallout shelter. There are also two completely enclosed court yards that could be (and are used by bio science classes) to grow crops. Then there is a giant green room on the roof, which can also be used to grow food. The building is solid steel, marble and brick. The only down side is that it is rather huge and would take a team of people to maintain/guard it. Unless you barricaded and blocked off more than 3/4 of the building.

There are 3 exchanges of nuclear weapons I can see happening in the next 20 years.

Best case scenario is after Iran gets the bomb a nuclear exchange is limited to Iran and Israel, and I say best by going off the criteria of the lowest body count while excluding the possibility of no nuclear exchange. I really don't see a peaceful coexistence between those 2 nations once Iran gets the bomb, and it's really hard for me to imagine those 2 countries not wiping each other out of existence.

The other possible exchanges would center around North Korea or Pakistan. North Korea only has the range to hit South Korea, Japan, or if they are feeling particularly spiteful and suicidal China, but I don't see them using the bomb. Yes North Korea is crazy, but they are petty dictatorship type crazy. Petty dictators want to remain petty dictators, and are generally unwilling to start a nuclear exchange that will result in their death. Pakistan on the other hand is all kinds of crazy, and has the real possibility of dragging India into a Iran/Isreal nuclear exchange, or starting a nuclear exchange on it's own.

My estimation of 1 near miss like the Cuban missile crisis was being kind of generous towards mankind. It has not even been 50 years since the Cuban missile crisis, and we are entering the beginning of a new nuclear arms race between nations that are not superpowers. Worse yet all the new nations that are not superpowers that are arming themselves with nukes do not have any 2nd strike capability, which makes a nuclear war between them more likely than it ever was between the USA and USSR.

The militarisation of space. Mark my words. Once a nation (most likely the US or China) gains space-borne weapons capabilities we're all dead. They'll be able to strike anywhere in the world with impunity. Worryingly, the US and Israel have refused to sign any treaties banning this future technological endeavour.
