I see alot of massive numbers of points in people's sigs. I had always assumed that these numbers represent painted, finished figs and was quite impressed with some folks apparent accomplishements until I've found out recently that this is not always the case.

So to those with sig-lists how much of your listed armies have you painted?

Related questions:
Do you view sig-lists as a measure of painted figs, assembled figs, or purchased figs?

Are army points lists in a sig a measurment of work put forth or cash invested?

You may notice that there are no army points sizes in my sig. You may take this as a representation of how many of my armies (SoB, IG, SM, Chaos Daemons, Cryx, DW: KoB) are fully painted. Yeah. I'm working on it. But I'm quite distract-- oo, a bee!

For my IG? Almost. I'm short a few tanks but for the most part they're painted up to that point. My Wolves are almost all painted, save a squad or two, but only a handful are based. My Iron Warriors are 3/4 painted, and my Crimson Fists are getting up there - I"m painting 1850 points by March for the Independent Characters' hobby challenge. Finally, my 2000 points of Orks are all painted save 5 stormboyz and a deff dread.

The funniest thing I've seen with this sort of thing is most people who have small armies under 1500 points do have them mostly painted, while people above around the 2000 level seldom have everything painted. Then when you get to the 10,000+ mark, absolutely everything is painted. I guess if you have that much stuff you've gotta be some sort of fanatic

I wouldn't even be completely sure how to tot up the points for my Ork army. I mean I've got a couple of hundred ork boyz, variously equipped nobs, vehicles, bikes, specialist boyz, tonnes of hq models. I can make any number of lists from it, but when I start trying to see how many points it's all "worth" it becomes an exercise in futility because I don't have an overall "build" in mind, so I don't know what upgrades and whatnot are appropriate. Do people just put in the bare bones costs, WYSIWYG stuff?

Anyhow. Over 50% of my orks are painted, 90% of my orcs are done, and 95% of my dwarves and trolls. I'm doing better these days.

+1.

I actually have about 2000+ points of Thousand Sons, about 3000 points of other Chaos, and 3000 points of Empire all painted.

My new army (Fantasy O&G) is only about 10% painted. Which is why they're not listed in my sig.

All the figures in my ork green tide and flesh tearers are all complete. Thats about 300 something models. I dislike using unpainted models when I play, so I devote most of my free time getting those models up to par with the rest of my army.

Yes i only list what i have painted. I don't consider buying a thousand points an accomplishment but having it fully painted and ready for play definitely is!

Interesting responses all around. I guess my initial assumption was fairly far off the mark.

I took a look through my figs recently and realized that while I do have at over 2000 points of each of my two armies painted, I also another 40-70% worth unpainted for each army. I was considering adding my armies to my sig, but (no judgment on those who do it) it would seem wrong to me to include the unpainted stuff.

This is a trend that I've noticed as well. It makes sense though. If you're painting everything as you get it, it's going to be lower. If you are just going to plunk down the $ for an army, there's no reason not just to go for a higher number. And of course, those with really high model counts have likely been at it for a while and put in the effort.

Not a single point painted. :\ I had finally started painting my Space Marines and actually had almost two full squads painted before I gave 40K up.

I intend to paint what I have before I buy anything else, and considering the games I'm playing, that shouldn't be too hard... 6 Cryx models, 7 Cygnar models, and the Dystopian Wars Prussian Naval battlegroup box which is 15 models and ten little resin bases of fighter planes.

Nonetheless, my SM army is 100% painted (not all finished, but it is all painted. Just need to finish highlighting). Same for my Eldar and GK.

My IG is about 50% painted. I won't use it until it is at least 100% base coated (NOT undercoated). Base coats of all the colours.

Given the points costs of those models, doesn't that mean you have ten painted models?

This is my feeling. I don't mind if other people do it but I don't add grey to my points or put it on the table.

Each and every single model in my sig is painted, by me, and in fact, includes a link to my army profiles page showing them. See for yourself - I have spreadsheets accounting for every point of visible wargear, but that much detail into games mechanics violates Dakka Dakka's rules so you'll have to do the math yourself. Only visible equipment is counted - a marine doesn't get 5 points for a meltabomb unless he's modelled wearing one.

The only anomaly is that there is a "complete army" pic at the top of the page showing them all together in the same picture, those sometimes are out of date. For example, I just painted up 12 scouts and added them to the page, but did not empty the marine army case to assemble and pose every space marine model for school picture day yet. I do it once in a while when they have enough stuff to warrant setting it up, and even then, the only complete army picture that is out of date is, I think, my Space Marines - pretty sure everything else is up to date. That being said, every single point in my signature is on those pages if not in that one large pic - the scouts referenced are accounted for in the troop section - and in fact I do not add points to my signature until that is done.

As a side note, since I have painted every single mini in those pictures, and they now span a length of time from literally the first miniature I painted in 2008 to the ones I finished this weekend, the differences in the paint jobs are jarring in some examples as I've gotten somewhat better with practice. I don't believe in stripped my minis just to improve them, though, as for one I like seeing how far I've gone, and also because, as on The Wire TV show, we don't take black numbers and turn them red. If I finished them, they're done.

Everything I own is not in my signature. I have an enormous deal of unbuilt and half-build stuff that hasn't yet made it, like a Storm Raven, a pair of Dreadnoughts, a Stompa, etc etc etc. I am on hiatus for buying stuff until either that pile is significantly smaller, or Necrons release, whichever comes first (it's gonna be the latter, I think).

These small heads down there represent armies and almost all of them are painted, except maybe a few models WIP.
Some of them are based on pre-5th ed lists and thus wouldn't be used 'as is', so the chance of painted models not being used surpasses the chance of unpainted models significantly
