Well met!

It would be interested to see what everyone else thinks

Now in my opinion the first five outshine the rest so far(though the others are still fantastic!)

Possibly because they progress nicely through the story line from a central point of view and the others have been more about events happening around the same time which of course tie in but don't progress in time much

As I said this is just my thoughts and I am interested to hear others

Thanks all

I stopped reading after Mechanicum, though I've heard good things about the 1000sons books. I liked the first book the best. Hours rising is just well written fantasy book.

Horus Rising is the best for me since it basically starts off the whole chain of events that led to the heresy. Thousand Sons also is an interesting read.

A Thousand Sons was easily the best I have read (I have also read Horus Rising, Fulgrim, Descent of Angels, Mechanicum, and Fallen Angels).

It made the Thousand Sons my favorite traitor Legion, and both Ahriman and Magnus became two of my favorite characters within the entire setting.

Magnus' crushing fall, the invalidation of everything he thought he knew, and his eventual betrayal of not only the Imperium, but his Sons, however well-meaning it may of been.

I've heard First Heretic is very good (haven't read it yet), but as of now my favorite is a dead tie between Legion and False Gods. False Gods did a really nice job of showing the emotions running throughout the Luna Wolves and Horus' Crusade Fleet as he slowly died from a poisoned wound, how they decided to use nontraditional methods to try and bring him back from the dead, and how he saw a future that he would help create by trying to prevent it. I felt it was a very tragic book showing how Horus turned against the Emperor.

I think I enjoyed Legion just because it actually depicted the story from the view of regular (and decidedly irregular) human beings, instead of just Space Marines. It actually had a few human main characters, like the individuals in the Imperial Army, and John Grammaticus. It was also really interesting to see that not all of the Legions that fell from the Emperor's grace did so for the sake of going against him - Alpha Legion did so to wipe out (or at least severely weaken) the greater threat of the Chaos gods.

All really good points!

Thousand sons also became my favourite traitor legion after reading the book
Although I love the idea that the alpha legion is actually loyal!

Though mechanicus was a great book I found it a little hard to get unto( a little like nemesis)

And as for the first heretic I'm about to start it, though I have to say I found the word bearers an extremely bland legion :-/ don't know why either just cannot relate to them.

I have only read Horus Rising, Legion, Prospero Burns and Thousand Sons, of which I thought Thousand Sons was by far the best. I've found the Dan Abnett Horus Heresy books to be rather bland, although his other 40k books are among my favourite (Ghosts and Eisenhorn books are fantastic). I guess I don't like the way he writes Space Marines.

I think if you read Horus Rising you should read false god and galexy in flames as it nicely concludes the story of Garviel Loken

well worth it.

I wouldn't call any of them fantastic.

I did like the Gavriel Loken books, although mainly for that character and no other reason.

Other books I enjoyed: A Thousand Sons, Flight of the Eisenstein, First Heretic, Legion and Descent of Angels.

Fallen Angels was terribly written, and I pretty much skipped/skimmed the stuff happening at the Forge World, but I'm very interested to read the next part of the story whenever they get around to it.

Fluff for the Fluff God!

I enjoy them very much and do think most of them are fantastic however I do agree that fallen angels was not as well written as it could have been be, its a shame because it could have been brilliant

I might have to get them as I really wanted to see what happened to him.

you really should! they are great!

if its the character side of things you enjoy as I know you start routing for loken during the first books, then you should try flight of the Eisenstien(4th book) as its the story of Nethanial Garro(Death Guard Captain) who is quite possibly my favourite character from the series.
oh and he is also the main character for a couple of new audio books.

I really liked Legion most, though I haven't read Mechanicum and the following ones yet. Battle for the Abyss stopped me enjoying the series pretty much. Someday I'll get back around to it, though.

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)

And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions.

I'll echo the sentiment that the more involving books are those chronicling Horus' fall and the events leading to Istvaan V (i.e. the first five books plus False Gods). The remainder are, to an extent sideshows, some of them interesting (Mechanicum, A Thousand Sons, Prospero Burns) others less so (Descent of Angels, Nemesis, Battle For the Abyss).

Though I've enjoyed the continuation of Garro's storyline, the audios have been for me rather underwhelming, principally because, good as Toby Longworth's reading and the sound design are, Black Library should be able to afford to do the kind of full-cast dramatisations that would really do the stories justice. As it is, they compare rather less than favourably with the Big Finish Doctor Who audios.

I think i have decided that fulgrim is my favourite.

I'm reading Nemesis just now and its pretty good but I'm probably bias due to the inclusion of Rogal Dorn

I like Kell... good character.

I agree on this!
It is starting to get tedious! even though fulgrim was a slight cross over in timeline I believe it was important enough and that well written it deserves a place in the list with the first 4 books!

KilroyKiljoy wrote:I thought The First Heretic was good, but I'm a Word Bearer fanboy at heart.

Haha! The fanboy always follows... Thats not a bad thing as I have heard the book is a rather good read even from the perspective of someone who does not either favour the legion or dislike it.

Though I must admit I find the Word Bearers rather boring, I hope this book changes my perspective on them as at the moment they are the only legion that bores me. However that is probably due to a lack of publication on their behalf before now.

I never cared much for the Word Bearers either, until after reading First Heretic. I still probably don't really feel drawn to the legion, but I think that Lorgar is one of the most interesting primarchs now.

Horus Rising and False Gods are the best as they're the first.
Fulgrim is pretty good, especially the meeting with young Eldrad - it's predictable that Fulgrim won't believe the Eldar but this was a tense moment. And I like the end, when Fulgrim was consumed by the daemonic entity - it shows that Daemon Prince Fulgrim is no longer the same Fulgrim who lead the Emperor's Children into the Great Crusade, but completely another essence living in his body.
And Legion was interesting to read but there weren't any usual for HH series journalists and remembrancers - it would be very interesting to read about their investigation of the Alpha Legion mysteries. And the final is still open...

They have a three part novel series, a novella, and a Horus Heresy book. They have more than any other Chaos force.

Then it's your personal preference rather than a lack of material. No problem with that, but they certainly have a heap of information if you ever wanted to find out more.
