A member of our Club (Jon) has a wonderful other half, and she has taken to forming a "Wargaming Widows" Club. She gets other females together and they have coffee mornings and stuff. It's all got a bit Crazy because they have discovered those T-shirts that say "My husband spends more on little metal space men than me". I was wondering if any other Gaming Groups had a "Female Support Group" in their midst because personally I could do without it, as i get my ear bent by the wife enough. Now I have a gaggle of women doing it too....
In my defence, i don't follow cricket, football or have a season ticket to Ice Hockey or whatever (okay I am a Patron of the Welsh National Opera and pretty much got to everything they put on!). But otherwise i feel relatively healthy and every man needs a vice?

One of my aunts really can't understand why a grown (married) man plays with little toy soldiers, but thankfully I have not got to cope with anything like a wargaming widows group

Is she a spinister type aunt, you know the ones who were left on the shelf and sought social acceptance by collecting Cats?

I tried to get the wife to hook up with a buddy's wife for a day out shopping while we did the 40k thing, but both ladies expressed social wariness towards one another and it never got off the ground. I'd be happy for her to get together with like-minded young ladies to gossip about their toy soldier playing husbands/boyfriends.
Lady Thorne was very excited about the activities for gamer's other halves available at Gencon, but honestly, so was I. It would have been hard to decide between learning how to blow glass and perusing the vendor hall had we gone last year.

I go to parties and BBQs and other things where the men always end up watching football or drinking on the porch and the women sit elsewhere and have a good time talking. I don't see why wargaming should be any different. Sounds like a great idea!
I think the issue is how many of the people playing wargames acutally have wives or GFs to pair up.

Thats quite odd, because women who have sons usually get used to all the wierd hobbies boys have.

I have a mate who has a shirt with "scrapbooking widower" on it (yes, he's a gamer - his wife co-opted his 'games room' for her 'scrapbooking room' - so he built a gaming shed (it's also the general purpose outdoor entertaining area with pool table and bbq area - but enclosed).
My wife has other things to entertain herself when I'm off gaming - and she SENDS me out to 'go play with your little spacemen".

That's all I'm asking for.

I knew a couple of "computer gaming widows" but never anyone who complained about wargaming. Granted I do it on and off a lot but still it is an amusing idea. I suggest you get your gaming buddies to form a different widows club to let them know you appreciate the joke, and remember to make time where tea and wargaming shall mix.
Except where bad placement of tea shall damage models. That would be bad mmmkay

Haha that's pretty funny. I read once about a 'Warcraft widows' website and forum, although I think that was somewhat serious - women who thought their marriages were on the rocks and desperate for any kind of advice that could prise their husbands away from such an addictive game.
As mwnciboo mentioned though I think there are much worse vices! I'm not saying the different pastimes are exclusive, but meeting up to play with toy soldiers would probably be viewed as preferable to having to drag someone in through the door and take their shoes off after they have come through the pub, or continuously catching them at the computer watching dodgy websites!

One of my gaming buddies and I are prone to overwork, stress and not taking enough time out. Our wives practically order us to game.
That said, Mrs Ludo thought my scratch built stompas were the silliest things she'd seen. She was right, of course.

My wife has gone with me to play Warhammer 40k or stuck around several times I've had gaming nights. She typically rolls my dice and drinks wine.
I forgot to mention, she has the best luck out of anyone at rolling dice. Always 5s and 6s....
When we played Dreadfleet, she beat me 4 out of the 5 scenarios we played through rolls.

Missus monkeyh is definitely a warhammer widow - she just doesn't get what I like about it, and is always bemoaning the fact that I'm either painting or on Dakka instead of spending quality time with her watching pointless drivel on tv. Having said that, she doesn't mind me doing the hobby too much (and has bought me loads of GW related stuff for Xmas/birthdays etc), and as I point out to her "It's perfectly harmless love, at least it's not dangerous or illegal". She hasn't formed a WW club although I have actually tried to encourage this. Usually she just goes to her mother's when I battle. Perhaps I'm getting the wargaming/social life balance thing wrong?

Be very glad she has this group. You may get your ear bent, but now the ladies have an outlet for their feelings and a chance to socialize while you are gaming (aren't you gaming while they meet, you should be...). Without the club, you'd probably hear about it even more.

It always surprises me from mates and anyone else when I hear their wife/girlfriend/significant other is giving them a hard time about Warhammer. It is one of the most productive and harmless hobbies, in terms of the trouble you can get into.

Im a lucky guy! recently my girlfreind expressed her anger at me not including her in any aspects of my 40k building and gaming, I humored her at first assuming she was...wel humoring me, but long story short, she now has a 600pt and growing ork army, aswell as destroying my pals sapce marines in her first game!! I cannot expres the swell of pride I felt in that moment. She regularly comes to me with origonal ideas, wich we sketch out together. ( she grins like the cheshire cat when I tell I can build them)
We now spend our evenings together biulding orks, designing battle waggons anD descussing the best way to crush our enemys, JOY!!
She`s also shown interest in the dakka forum so dont be surprised if she shows up here slagging me off and telling you all to treat your women better!
One draw back is she now expects 2 gifts for birthdays, x mas, ect, a nice expensive girly gift and a nice expensive warhammer model!

My wife loves my LEGO hobby and bass playing, but her opinion of wargaming never recovered from the time she accompanied me on a shopping run to the Chicago Battle Bunker.
Her comment afterwards was "I don't like associating my husband with those people". Not an entirely fair statment, but considering some of the mutants that happened to be present that evening, I can't really blame her.
She still doesn't like wargaming, but she has said she likes my current group of gaming friends a few of which we have socialized with outside of gaming. Baby steps...

lol It's nice when that happens though. Though has she been into a GW yet with how women are generally... looked at/drooled on/heavy breathed upon . Might want to warn her about them places

I feel for you. One of the GW's I have been in with my other half puts her off ever touching the stuff though she enjoys looking at the results of the painting and modelling aspects and she shows an interest which I think is humouring me . Now perhaps getting her some harlequins and leaving them around primed with paints and brushes to hand may persuade her otherwise...
And perhaps we should start calling our wargaming our "handbag/shoes/shopping/ widows club"?
