A question I hear sometimes about starting my third army and now I want to hear what other players answer to it.
In my case I have a quite large marine force and a lot of IG and I ended up starting Dark Eldar. I started them because when I went from fantasy to 40k I would have chosen Dark Eldar but the old models... I hated them. They were horrid in my opinnion. Now that they were updated I just had to finally start the army. The models look so good that I could not resist anymore. I have pretty much abandoned my IG and turned my back on my marines as I've been dedicating myself to the Dark Eldar army I finally started.
So why did you start a new army?

I currently have 4 armies... all space marine armies, all from the same Chapter.
1) Blood Angels (8th company)
2) Deathwing (1st company)
3) Marine Bikers(6th company)
4) Codex Marines(5th company)
I start new armies because I get bored with what I have, but not bored enough to switch from marines to something else

In same boat as you Jihadin, going through a MEB and will be medicaly retired, this hobby has been a anxiety relief, and i have started a few armies and extended a few as well, mainly my Tau ( greatly expanded them), just started work on a Ork freebooter force.
I was able to get a Therapy Worksite for the WTU here and we focused on building , gaming and painting, even got award for it, all in all the hobby has been there for me when everything else fell apart.
Starting armies is kinda like begining a mission, you get to see it grow and become something, and is a nice mental exercise.

Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine
|
I had dark eldar (sold old minis)
Marines - salamdners like green and cannot roll to hit so flamers are good
then NEcrons - needed no vehicles (see how that will last!)
Nids - ditto
Then : meched up my marines
did jump blood angels
sold nids to get new dark eldar
So I have :
2nd company salamanders,
4th company blood angels
Necrons in need of an update
and Dark Eldar in need of assembly.
To boot I have a wood elf army (95% done - 3 warhawks some where to paint!)
A 4000++ point lizarman army that lives in Ireland so until I get a house it will stay there
and a 3000+ chaos army I accumulated from 2nd hand battleforces and converted loads of stuff for. It's in the middle of being painted and plogged!

I started with space marines, simply because thats what drew me in (damn you power armor). But after realizing they weren't what I wanted, I went Tau, and I love them. Even their flaws I love. Still have my salamanders, and I play them every once in awhile, but my true allegience is to the greater good.

Was a space wolf player, before they became flavor of the month. Always loved their lore. But its the lore that made me want to change from them, In the lore my 5 grey hunters take a tyrant EVERY TIME. and most of us know how that fight goes on tabletop. so i decided to play something i was relatively unfamiliar with. Dark Eldar came a calling.

I have a bad case of shiny syndrome. The models just look fantastic so I have to buy them, hence why I have Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard and Death Company dreadnought. I do pretty well coping with it, family is really supportive, they get me stick to one army at a time, hence why I've been slowly building up Chaos Space Marines for at least three years.

Using Object Source Lighting
|
1- fluff
2- aesthetics
3- gameplay
For example, what I'm working on now:
-Astral Claws has the first 2 and can be played as marines (of potentially different flavors) or chaos (fulfilling all my power armor wants)
-as does Death Korps (with a very different game style, also could aesthetically play as imperial or traitor easily enough)
-I'll probably eventually be in the market for a numerous alien army (eldar/dark eldar, orks, depending on what grabs my interest when these are far enough along)

Road-Raging Blood Angel Biker

I started with Tyranids. I then came down with what I call, "Tank Envy" and got about 1500pts of Orcs.
That was not the cure for this, and I sold them to start Blood Angels.
I loved my marines, but desired something different to paint.
Went back to my Middle School Love, WFB Dwarves.
Got Battle for Skull Pass, so I also had O&G so I ran with both. Got a 2k force of each, and played 1 game of 8th and hated it enough to jump ship 100% on WFB.
Picked up Tau as they would have been my 1st choice if a fiend didn't already play them.
Like them as painting, but not enough..... and I finally gave in and started Dark Eldar because of all the cool conversion and custom options. (As like 90% of conversions characters are Kalabite warriors from the transport box)
The Local GW closes in January, and I hope to finish my DE,BA, 'Nids and Tau before that Happens. Just need like $300 usd and I can stop giving GW my $$ for a while.

Well I got the DE in the third (I think) starter set. Eventually I just go tired of the weak transports and opted to go for something tad bit...heavier, but I sitll liked the cheaper costs of infantry compared to something like marines. Thus stepped forward the IG and my tank (not leafblower, LRBT) armies. Boy I love the new book. After a while I got tired of being outshot by Tau, and picked them up (if ya can't beat 'em...). Then the buddy I started with sold me his BT for cheap (now he's getting back in . These got half turned into a custom chapter and half stayed BT. As my converting skills increased I liked orks more and more. Now I have a small 1850 army of ork and tau. I looked at my marines and figured...hey why not try chaos in a different way. A charity auction saw me raise enough store credit to get an 1850 army for my extra bits .
Now with me being an electrical engineer, I feel some love for these new 'crons. I'll probably have to sell off my tau to help me get started but meh.

I have stated secondary armies and switched factions because I was bored with building/painting the models or didn't like their rules/way they play. I'm currently starting my 5th army (Orks) because I'm getting tired of building and painting GK, which I still have a lot to do lol. I also like starting armies because due to work I get done late at night and no one is up so I just build and paint to keep sane lol

I started with Necrons back in 2006. After a few years (Before 5th Ed) I wanted a second army that was fast and sleek, so I got Eldar.
I played predominately with the Eldar during 5th, since it wasn't near as fun for my Crons anymore. After awhile, I wanted to have a hordy fun Army, so I got my Tyranids. Built them up so I can do any kind of build I want with them.
I decided this year I wanted to get into WHFB, so I did Tomb Kings, and just acquired a Horde of Dark Elf Models, so I've got two armies set for there.
The Necron release is also making me pretty happy, as I'll get the chance to dust off that army, and make it my main army again.

Well i started with eldar and moved on due to a few things, I got quite a big force that didn't really need any more models. There was a degree of first army syndrome the paint scheme was all over the place between units, plus I struggled in game terms when the original codex got updated I didn't adapt to well. Also I went from education into work and thus had a lot more disposable income.
Started Thousand sons as a result, liked the models and loved the codex had the cash so off i went.
Filled up most force slots twice over, then another edition came around and had to adapt the force as a result not to drastic but I missed the flavour of old codex. Also and this may sound a bit lame but i got a bit bored of painting blue all day.
So started sisters, liked the models and the whole inquisition strikeforce dynamic and the fact they weren't an obvious choice army to start. Also the allies rules meant i could start collecting some of the lovely IG forgeworld tanks as well.

Started Marines because back then it was marines and orks.
Then to Eldar because of the sheer fire that shuriken catapults could throw out.
Then a long lull.
Then Tau because I have always had a thing for battlesuits.
Then Orks because of the comedy and to many deployments to take life to serious anymore.
Now I am playing Dark Eldar because they are wicked looking and because in my mind this is how Eldar should have been from the start.
And now Dang Gamesworkshop, you would have to go and make the Necrons look so dang cool.

My first army was Necrons back in early 4th. Played Necrons all through 4th.
Then a friend was looking into getting Space Marines and selling his Tau. I had learned how to play 40k, prior to buying the Necrons, with small skirmishes with his Tau.
so I bought about 1500 points of Tau at the end of 4th for 100 bucks. some of it was primed, some was painted, most were grey. I stripped the paint off of the Tau, using my friend's Color scheme, Started fresh. Finally getting around to finishing the painting ( only 2 hammerheads to go).
With an end to the painting adventure of my Tau soon being in sight, I was looking into other armies. I wanted a second army, an evil army, An Assault heavy army, but most of all, An army without a 3+ armor save on every Tom Dick and Harry. Chaos Daemons caught my eyes. I bought the Codex, skimmed through it, read up on Daemons in the Dakka Dakka search function and posted a few Test Army lists (something I wish I did with the Tau. Prolly wouldn't have taken me 4 years to finish them if I did.)
Just last week, I made a major purchase from GW. 200 dollars in paints and Daemon Models (and the Book, "How to paint Citidel Miniatures". I think that might help me this time around.) for one conversion project for an HQ.
Which HQ? I'm not telling. You gotta check my blog to find out
Edit: Off topic real quick, For someone with the title of World's Least Interesting man, I sure am long winded. >.>

Started with Necrons, played half a dozen games with them before getting really bored. Got orks, enjoyed them, but got sick of being beat by marines, so I got Dark Angels. Really enjoyed doublewing, but then wanted something different, so daemons. Played them TWICE and realised I hated their deployment stupidity. Got a few boxes of Eldar, didn't amount to much. Done the same with Dark Eldar. Then started my Iron Warriors, who this far, are my longest still-functioning army. Then started on my Flesh Tearers who I've yet to finish. Now working on my Crimson fists, and I've not had so much fun since Doublewing.

I tend to stick to one army because I hate playing with unpainted models, and my painting pace is absolutely glacial. So a new army is a huge undertaking and it takes a long time before I have enough painted stuff that I'm comfortable feilding them.
