I started DE because I wanted something fast, that could have a large range of tactical options and had good fluff.

I started Tau because, I have always wanted them, their firewarriors are awsome and I was tired of fragile units. I also wanted a more defensive play style from DE.

I started tyranids because I loved the models (when they came out in 4th ed) and I wanted to swarm! But now I am repainting because I still like the models, and they provide interesting tactical options (imo) and lots of units for me to try out (unlike tau with a relatively small selection and tactical options (imo))

All in all I start new armies if the fluff is cool, I can think of cool fluff, I can think of a good paint scheme, I like the feel of the army, the way it plays and the models. On that basis I should have eldar too but their rules really put me off so until they get a new codex I am content for now.
(necrons also suit me but the models are bit love/hate ish and i'm hate)

I have 4 armies.

Eldar (started in 1987).
SM (started in 1988) - because I wanted to play against other Eldar players - and SM had more variety with poses.
GK (started when the codex came out in 3rd ed) - the models were cool.
IG - started in 1992, but didn't get around to doing much with them until 2009. Tanks. No other reason.

I'm limited by storage space. I could start another new army, but I have to get rid of one of the armies I have now.

I don't LIKE* enough of the newer models enough to do this.

*This means I have to like them MORE than what I have.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

I started Tau when they first came out (having only one Ethereal as your HQ was so AWSOME! ::sarcasm: because they were shooty but uniform. Then after about ten years of playing that I switched to Guard because of their fluff: ordinary men fighting the galaxies most terrifying enemies. So I spam as many Infantry as I could.

However, Robin Cruddace reared his head and sucked the character out of the Guard, so I switched back to Tau.

Starting DE once I get my car money in the coming week. Going with them because it can field female units unlike any of the other armies.

Though I've been considering going instead with a Ordo Xenos force using lots of xenos mercenaries as counts as henchmen.

As well as Black Templars because they're black g'damned templars.

I'm incredibly indecisive, and cheap, so once I pick one, I won't be going back!

If I didn't have friends to make sure I stay in line with what I'm doing (DE) I would have like six 1000 point armies, I just love alot of the armies.

For me, it's just because of modeling envy. I started out playing Tau because I liked the concept of a high-tech race. Then I started building them, and just hated the lack of ability to model them creatively. I moved on to Space Wolves on a friend's recommendation, and spent a solid year collecting them, and loving putting together Grey Hunters for all the unique arms and heads they've got. I've now moved on to Orks because as I discovered while playing Wolves, I love to convert things - and Orks is the perfect army to do so.

Well, as my sig shows, I've got a few armies and they all play pretty different. Obviously my 1 loss UMs are tops to me, they're extra fluffy and I really dig them. For pure "fun" its always Orks, and the Tau are just for something that is so not SM or Ork. (Space puppies are for cheese)

My first 40k army(my very first army was Lizardmen):
I really wanted to try out 40k after I had played an intro battle with SM(and got my ass whooped by Orks), and it was just around the time Nids were being rumored. So, I started getting interested, and got into 40k and now I play it more than Fantasy.

My Dark Eldar:
I love Nids, don't get me wrong, but painting them was getting dull and they are really only a decent fit for my playstyle. So I started looking into other armies, and eventually settled on Dark Eldar, simply because I love they way they play(this was the old dex). I got the models, had about a 10% win ratio, but absolutely loved the army. Then the new dex and models came out only a few months later and I kicked myself for buying the old crappy ones. But, oh well, it still is my pride and joy even if the models are crap.

Well, I started the hobby a little more than a year or two ago. Time seems to fly by sometimes. Started with AoBR, with the original intention to sell off my Orkz. Painted my marines and enjoyed them a lot. Played a few games against some other Orkz and found them fun, so I started modeling them up. Probably one of the most fun armies to customize, since you can literally use just about anything else to build their stuff with, plus the models they have give you such much to work with. Then Blood Angels came out with new stuff. Saw DC and lot's of JP's and had to start them up, lot's of fun with them. In only a few months they quickly became my largest army. Then I starting catching the Imperial Guard bug, I find the squishy soldiers to be a nice change to power armor and just rushing across the board. Then Dark Eldar came out and everything about them screams, " You have to have this." So I went out and bought up a ton of it. Only got a little put together for now, but working on it. The models are small and tricky to put together quickly, plus lots of finecast stuff to deal with.

Now I've skipped Greyknights and Necrons for now, but did happen to start up a small amount of Black Templars. I love the Templars and find them fun and relaxing to paint, such a simple palette, but so much I can do with them.

I'm trying to stick to these and not add any more for a while, but we'll see how long that lasts.

Procrastinating.

I'll get another army at 1500-2000 or so just 'cause that is the highest points cost in my group.

I started 40k with Orks because two of my DnD friends had bought AoBR for the marines; I then bought a small Tau army off one of them and expanded it heavily because I really liked the high-tech, "we don't automatically kill everyone different" fluff.

I recently moved onto Daemonhunters / Grey knights when GW released the PDF of the old codex; I just really liked the uber-elite style of the army.

I also have a very small Ultramarines force in progress, having decided to keep the marines from my latest AoBR purchase; they're going to be more of a long-term modelling project than an army.

Oh and I have one Valkyrie painted up in old style Fleet Air Arm colours, just because it's cool!

I still love those crazy Orks though...

Just a sidenote but this is a thing that is beyond my understanding. Collecting an army of exactly 2000 points for example and that's it. The army is done and you take a next one. We usually play 1500 point games and my marines (the one I started 40k with) are well over that point cost. Buying new units after that let's me make different kinds of lists with the same army. I may have understood wrong and I mean no offence but I do know people who collect 40k armies like this.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

I've got a strange afflication where, as mcuh as I like to buy shiney new toys, I don't like buying kits I already own and are unpainted.

This means I have (unbuilt) kits from 14 out of 16 40k armies and 9 out of 16 wfb armies... Most aren't even legal unit combos.

This makes it hard to start a 'new' army, I'm more likely just adding units to a current small one.

When I do start my second army it will be due to growing tired of working on Chaos Marines. Will do Tyranids then, should be a nice change of pace from marines I think.

Here comes the list:

I started Tau first because I loved the look of the models, in particular the battlesuits, Piranha and tanks.
I started Black Templars because I saw the campaign in the Dec 2006 issue of WD and thought they looked cool.
I started Blood Angels a while after that because I read more about Space Marines, and decided they were cooler! (Edit: collected before the new necron fist-bumping codex, but they still rock)
I started collecting Chaos because everyone else was collecting Space Marines, and I liked the background (WB in particular) and the models.
I recently started Eldar because I like the background (Path of the Seer's fault), models and want to try something different from all the Marines that I've had.

So basically, if I like the background and models!

Orks started 1998, shelved (and mostly deleted. Won't be using these old minis anymore) 2002. 2000-something pts.

Tau started 2003, shelved 2005. 750pts.

Orks re-started 2009. Two long years, lots of fun and no plans for shelving them. 2450pts.

Necrons 2011/2012? Who knows. I now have some time and money to burn, I like the minis, like the fluff, and i've been considering getting a backup army should my orkses get obsolete.

Tau 20?? I'll be updating them whenever their dex comes out, be it a good codex or printed toliet paper. I just love the looks of them.

I started wargaming with Chaos Marines (3.0). I stopped because I wanted something new.

I started Ultramarines. I stopped after collecting a massive army... and got completely sick of painting blue.

I then began collecting my Orks. There is plenty of green so there is still enough variety to keep me interested.
I just wish I hadn't chosen Speed Freeks because my friend started Blood Angels and I painted them. Soooo much red.
