I did it when I was younger. Then I realized I was surrounded by cheap off shore steel that wasn't worth a gak so I got rid of it. A girl gave me this surprisingly sturdy battle axe for my bday one year though, I kept that one. It's not worth much but I've no doubt it could stop a couple robbers before busting.

You probably wouldn't need to even swing the axe just running into the room shouting to give the impression of a blind rage and I think they'd gak themselves and leave without taking anything.

Ha! I wouldn't doubt it. Instead of finding an old lady, people sleeping, or children, the robbers instead meet me in minimal sleep wear brandishing my battle axe screaming "fear me!"

I've got a collection of knives as I always kept ones I got issued, Ive got a commando dagger, a machete I used in Sierra Leone, several K-Bars i swapped with US soldiers and a quality little CRKT pocket knife I got off one of the SEAL's
The only actual sword is a samurai sword I bought when I was in Japan and they shipped it home for me, it was when I was on leave after spending 6 months in cave so I had more money than sense and I think it cost me about $600, but I only bought it on a whim and I keep it behind my bed in case I ever need to decapitate an intruder so I hardly think of myself as a collector.
I'm collecting sexually transmitted diseases though, the pride of my collection is a case of Gonorrhoea i contracted in Thailand that my doctor assured me is so virulent it eats every other STD and makes you immune to everything else.

You're a legend, matty.
I've got a couple of cheap half-tang samurai swords which, while very sharp would probably break if I used them. I've got those packed away somewhere. I also have Glamdring from LOTR. Really nice looking sword, with a nice plaque(?) thing to hang it on. That's on my wall. I'd like to get a proper carbon steel samurai sword, but because of the UK being a nanny state you have to be registered with a club now.

I demand accuracy! Is it a Katana or Wakizashi?
As for me, I got my dad's Boken handed down to me, battle damage and all. Until I'm older, I'll stick to that.

The only REAL sword I have, is a really badass Claymore my brother bought me for my birthday some years ago. The others are not really what I would call swords and such, they are cheap ass/poorly made junk that resembles swords. Ive got an executioners Axe, that was suppose to be of good quality, but it actually broke with me just messing around swinging it, not even hitting anything. So now it looks all hodged podged but its tough as nails now I plan on chopping it up and making it a bit smaller/easier to use, because the current way its built, its VERY unbalanced.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Depends on how one defines 'use', I imagine. At a basic level... well, anyone can manage 'the pointy end goes in the other guy.'
Formal (or even informal) training can make one much more effective in close-quarters combat though. But in the final analysis, the most important fact about fighting with a deadly weapon is don't pick it up unless you are actually willing to kill. Grabbing a sword just to scare someone can get you shot while you are threatening; whereas if you close quickly and strike he won't have time to draw.
Assuming one starts within 10' or so, anyway.

depends on the blade and the person's stride. thats about 3 metres, I can probably do that with a moderate length sword and a lunge. Other trick is also not to show off how long your blade is.

Katanas are probably the most overhyped weapons around, even the hype surrounding modern arms fairs pales in comparison to the legendary +5 razor sword of Japness.
Sure there are some nice ones, but Damascus steel or Toledo steel will match that. The Saxons also made swords in a manner reminiscent to the swordmaking techniques of the Japanese, except they would twist the metal rather than fold it. It led to some very interesting metallurgy.
A true 'ancient' katana, as in per Meiji Restoration century Japanese is likely to be quite fragile, even when new. Yes it tends to self sharpen, yes it has a nice edge but a good field sword from a quality European armourer will put it to shame, the western design is a superior fighting blade in almost every way..
