Ok so i'm trying to work out a Grey Knights army for at least 1,000 pts that's solid and since I have only glanced through the codex I thought I should ask others for advice first and then look at the recommended options.
I would like to prioritize the following (in order of importance...most to leasat)
Effectiveness vs Meta - I plan on playing at the LGS tourneys so want something that will be competitive most of all.
WYSIWYG - I suck at painting and converting, so would like to stick to models currently available.
Points Value - Between 1000 to 1500 pts (it's only a starter list so looking to start at low point games)
Cost to Buy in - Let's face it, this is an expensive hobby. I'm thinking of a budget below $400 to start
Help is greatly appreciated, I'm hoping to get some good recommendations quickly while the Black Friday sales are still in effect.

Well start off with deciding what kind of army you wnt. I play a Purifier list which I enjoy and works well:
Crowe
5 Purifiers 1 psycannons halberds daemon hammer. Razorback
5 Purifiers 1 psycannons halberds daemon hammer. Razorback
5 Purifiers 1 psycannons halberds daemon hammer. Razorback
Psyfleman Dread
Psyfleman Dread
Draigowing works well if you want a good army with not a lot of models, and is a tough army to kill.

Not sure what I want, I suppose i'm looking for whatever is among the most competitive Grey Knights builds.
So competitive and something I can build onto later as I grow it into a larger force able to take on all-comers.

Do you want to paint lots of models, or about 20, cause' you can do both. What models do you like, eg. Draigo, GKSS, Paladins etc.
You could buy a Draigowing army in one go containing about 25 models plus a LR/Dreadknight

I don't paint I'm the worst guy for itt, I'm in the hobby for the gameplay (my substitute for chess. I would liike to compare the 2 lists so if you could offer a sample list like that crowe + purifiers list I would be very grateful.
At the moment if just only read like 15 percent of the codex mostly the fluff.
So why is crowe so good? Everyone recommends him but I don't get why. The blade of antwyyr boosts enemies that assault you doesnkt it? Seems like not such a good HQ choice unless I'm missing some crazy easter egg in here

Crowe basically takes down whatever kills him in CC. Eg: "Ha, my 280 point model just killed your leader" "Yeah, now my 150 point model just took him down with him, chew on that!"
One example (Don't know for cetain) of Draigowing is:
Draigo
Libby
5 paladins
5 paladins
vindicare assassin
LR
Don't know how many points that is, don't have codex to hand. You've seen my Purifier list, what do you think?

Basically one of the more competitive builds in a rather "competitive" codex involves Draigo and a bunch of Paladins.
For example
Draigo
Librarian
10 Paladins
5 Paladins
Dreadknight, personal teleporter
Dreadknight, personal teleporter
With wargear and upgrades you can easily make a 2000 point army with 19 models.
In New Zealand money (it'll be cheaper nearly anywhere else)
Draigo $46
Librarian $46
15 Grey Knight Terminators $261
2 Dreadknights $212
That's a total of $565 New Zealand for a 2000 point army. (You'd have to source three more psycannons from ebay because the terminators only come with one (Fail GW) so add that in)
It's probably the cheapest army in the game to play just because the models cost so many points.

In Draigowing (and only in Draigowing) I think that the Dreadknights are better than psyfleman dreadnoughts. They're another 2+/5++ unit in an army brimming with such units which gives your opponent an unenviable range of target options.
On the other hand I think they look daft.
To be honest I'd probably play Crowe based Purifiers before I'd play Draigo. Crowe sucks and Purifiers die as easily as other marines to shooting so it's not such a complete faffing of the game for the other player (no Razorspam of course).
Grey Knights are in many ways the Fantasy Daemons of 40k. You have to concentrate on not being too competitive in order that the other player enjoys their game.

Like the Purifier list, it will serve you well. I would recommend making the Draigowing 1500 points and squeezing in a dreadknight but you have a sturdy list. The only thing I'd say about Draigowing is that if you make a mistake, it can be very unforgiving as you do not have many models, whereas with Purifiers you can afford to lose a few models. Hope you come to a decision soon.

I was expecting to see Scott again.
Anyways i liked the purifier list as well the only problem with that is long range shooting armies are always a problem. So you might want to take a vindicare assain instead of a dreadnought and remove psybolt on 2 razorbacks which will still give you an army of 1000 points. I would suggest get 2 dreadnought with vindicare and you can have a diverse army without paying too much.( Not in the same army list just as an option to choose)

I love a Vindicare.
A super cheap GK army is one that focuses on the insane capacity of the Inquisition to field vehicles.
Coteaz (100)
NadeQuisitor (55)
4 x 1 Acolyte + 3 Melta-Acolytes + Psyback (380)
Coteaz Squad - 3xMM Servitors, 2xJokearo, Chimera (160)
CC Squad - 6xDCA 5xCrusader (150)
Rhino (40)
Vindicare
Stormraven (205)
1250
The CC squad and Nade Inquisitor gets the Stormraven, and the Rhino becomes a hard candy shell for the vindicare.
6 Vehicles, 5 scoring units, and an awesome assault unit to answer a lot of low point questions...

I'm honestly in love with all the suggestions listed here and i'm near a decision on this wanted to get your opinions...
I think I would like my final 2000 pt list to be a combination of Draigo and Crowe. Or is that a terrible idea?
I want to start with Draigo + Paladins as my starter because it's cheaper and just easier to set up and learn to play (i hope...) and then slowly add Purifier list units to it as I start to play higher point games. Ultimately ending with the following list
I think this gives a healthy variety of different units to play so I won't be bored being a 1 trick pony. Or do Draigo and Crowe not work well together?
I'm pretty excited about this 'end game' army so do let me know if there's anything terribly wrong with the list or that could be changed to make it work

If you want to take Purifiers and you're already taking Draigo then use your elite slots to take Purifiers. Unless you're taking more than three units of Purifiers it is never a good idea to take Crowe. He's 150 points of nothingness.

You definitely don't need Crowe w/ Draigo. Draigo has the ability to make units scoring.
Also, Don't list the point costs broken down like that, it's against forum rules.
Furthermore, My 10x Squad is 700 as it doesn't contain an apothecary; I'm not sold on the apothecary in a draigowing.

I included Crowe to make the Purifiers scoring...Draigo doesn't make those scoring. And i'd be stuck with only 2 troop choices of 5-man paladin units.
What would you then recommend for a 2,000 pt list of mixed Draigowing + Purifiers which is what i want to do.
With a starter set of Draigo and 2 5-man units of Paladins.

for scoring unit purposes in 2k points draigo will make the psyrifleman dreadnoughts scoring so that will help, since they have 48" range they can just sit in the back while being effective, unlike paladins

i am talking about multi obj games at least 3, if not more. And they are not supposed to move fast they need to move 6" per turn while blasting light vehicles while your paladins march across in their transports
