I was thinking the other night about a Dakka convention-members of Dakka coming together and meeting up.
it would be interesting to see the variation.
of course this is just a thought but it could become reality....

We have Dakkacon on the East Coast in the US. Next one is at Showcase Comics in Philly for the weekend of 28th January.
There were several UK meet and games previously (silver sorcerer?) but I don't know if they did any for this year.
Mebbe start whipping up some interest for 2012?

It would be pretty sweet to have a UK and Europe Dakkameet. As much as I would love to pop over the pond, my finances won't stretch too that!
Btw, how many Dakkacons do you guys have in the States every year MGS? Any idea?

We are holding 2 per year at Showcase.

One at the end of January, one in July/August.
I think Reds8n and Legoburner were fairly involved in running the UK ones?

Platinum Devils were the UK meet ups organised by Ketara. I very nearly made the last one, but had a stag do the weekend before and couldn't justify to Mrs Flashman (and Flashman Jnr) disappearing two weekends in a row.
Unfortunately, I believe that was the last one Ketara was doing because it was his final year at Uni which is where the meet up was based. I should organise something myself but Southampton is not exactly the centre of the UK... it would be just me and Phototoxin

If you wanted to sort one for the UK, decide on a central city (Birmingham seems ideal) and talk to the largest flgs there about hosting you're group.

I jest. Although I rarely travel north of the M4, it's an intriguing idea...

I find it kinda funny that people in the UK think that going 100 miles for something is a long way. I go 86 miles to my dads house every weekend to play music.
There is a saying I once heard: " In Europe, 100 miles is a long way, in the United States 100 years is a long time".
Hell going to Vegas is 300 miles and we do that all the time.

Birmingham is central-ish, although Nottingham has WHW and is probably a bit closer to the true centre if you go from the border with Scotland down to around Portsmouth.
|
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Yeah there were three platinum devil tournaments by Ketara in Canterbury all well attended and a great laugh as well. Not being central didn't seem to do any harm. Six inches of snow on the satuday morning helped to make it a bonding experience at PD2 as well!
The was as MGS said the silver sorcerer at WHW which was also cool but that was a few years ago now. I made it from
Essex and there were quite a few from London as well.
As to the yanks that wonder about the short distances you have never met the British obsession With contra flow systems, average speed checks or £1.30 a litre fuel!
I would happily come to another Dakka meet in a snap (hint hint Ketara!!!) as I don't really have time to commit to a club,l and am not too keen on serious touries.
I thought that Maybe in the future I might organise something if Wayland ever get their games area up and running but with notprop jr #2 on the way that's a pipe dream!

Yup, as notprop says, there have been a few.
Silver Sorcerer probably had the most countrywide attendance, though PD3 had a good northern turnout.
Nottingham is generally considered a good venue for these sorts of things - it's central, and you have both Warhammer World and Wayland Games as larger gaming venues - the upstairs hall at Wayland has loads of tables... Of course, since it's a UK Dakka meet rather than an England one, the true centre is probably around the Leeds/Manchester line?

Yes this, and train fares aren't much better either.
Anyway, how much does it cost to rent out Warhammer World? Or do you just rent a group of tables or something? I've only been there once and spent most of my time looking at the minis.
EDIT - I've emailed them to ask (though I might be on their ignore list due to a range of sarcastic emails I've sent their way this year )

I'm sure it was not that much especially once it was split 20 odd ways. I don't remember paying more than a tense for a two day competition.
I think you can just turn Up there and play for free most days so it won't be that much.

If people are serious about this, is there any chance of making it a sticky? Im really up for a UK Dakka meet and would hate to see the thread disappear!
Edit: I, like Flashman, have also emailed GDub. However, this being the first email I've ever sent them then I reckon there is more of a chance of me not being on thier ignore list!

What about Maelstrom Games as a venue....it rivals Warhammer World in gaming space, and pretty decent on site parking, and they won't restrict the types of games being played.
While I'd be interested in a Dakka-con, I nolonger play WH40K, so a place like WHW would be out of the question (for me), but I'm sure I'm not the only Dakkite to play Infinity or MERCS, perhaps even Malifaux!!

The way we're organising the US one is with Warmahordes on the first day, 40k on the second and WHFB on the third, to give people choice. That also means two/three slots (evenings vs days) for open gaming/smaller systems.
And yes, Warhammer World would be entirely restrictive on who got to play what.
I'll also put out a recommendation for Cut and Thrust in Bristol for gaming space, good tables and a great host (dakkanaut Alex Kolodotschko ) but that's a little South for many I would think.
(here's RandyMcStab contemplating his next move whilst I drink tea and look dead sexy)

Too many security issues
On a serious note, if people look into venues and report back on costs and any gaming restrictions, we would have a better idea of potential locations (I've emailed a few now and am bemused as to why this info isn't just on their websites - mind you, I'm supposed to manage our web pages at work, but never get around to it).

The NWGC about 10mins away from me is decent. It's quite spacious, but lacks a bit terrain-wise (although as it hosts more tournies, it gets more revenue and is starting to get more terrain appearing) and the short table edges are all 4f, so there's not much variation.
I can probably get a few pics in of it in its current incarnation, as the website isn't very up to date... like, at all...
Outside of that, I dunno where else to think about, the only places around me that I know of are all GWs.

I guess one of the first questions is whether people are willing to pay to attend an event like this. If so, theres a broad range of potential venues.....but then someone would have to step up and play organiser, for things like gaming tables, terrain, etc etc.
If people arn't willing to pay, then you would need to source a "casual" venue, which brings me back to either Maelstrom or Warhammer World.
If an event were going to happen, I guess I could "borrow" an army and play WH40K if Warhammer World proved to be a more desirable venue for everyone else.......
.....Don't make me revist the dark side.
