Silly Howard, we need to at least attemot to play something to attest our gaming community credentials, otherwise we would just be a group of random people drinking too much beer while talking bollox.
Actually scrub that comment, that sounds like a plan!

I'm fine with either, saves me having to lug a case around, although i'll only be drinking lemonade because my stomach disagrees with any type of alcohol (apart from red wine, but my head disagrees with that instead)

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. The was as MGS said the silver sorcerer at WHW which was also cool but that was a few years ago now. I made it from
Essex and there were quite a few from London as well.
Yup, as notprop says, there have been a few.
Silver Sorcerer probably had the most countrywide attendance, though PD3 had a good northern turnout.
Nottingham is generally considered a good venue for these sorts of things - it's central, and you have both Warhammer World and Wayland Games as larger gaming venues - the upstairs hall at Wayland has loads of tables...

Of course, since it's a UK Dakka meet rather than an England one, the true centre is probably around the Leeds/Manchester line?
There's a venue in Stockport, http://www.northwestgamingcentre.co.uk/ and they do games other than GW, so that side would be covered too.

Howard A Treesong wrote:How about London? I suggest this because I now live here... London would be lovely, since I live here, but it's pretty impossible to find a cheap/free venue. And then, if people stay over for a weekend, it's a hell of a lot more expensive than elsewhere. Hotels/parking etc. With Platinum Devil in Canterbury, Ketara and Reds8n were able to get a lecture theatre with a load of tables out of term time, and we did two summer events and a winter one. However, Ketara is now a bit busy with college work to organise, and Canterbury isn't perfect for everyone. Here's my report from the first one - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/288976.page and Panic's from the second http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/334975.page With Silver Sorcerer, the organisation duties were taken on by Chimera_Calvin. I'm pretty sure we just needed to contact Warhammer World and tell them how many tables we needed. When we did the event we had around 20 players, and reserved 12 tables. They had a (much bigger) Blood Bowl tournament on the same weekend, which meant that there was plenty of scenery available. We played tournament games in the daytimes, and then played for fun on the weird tables in the evenings (while consuming most of Bugman's Bar). When we were organising it, there was talk that in future they would be taking a deposit for large groups, but either they hadn't introduced it yet or we weren't a big enough group to count. The secret is to get in contact with Warhammer World itself, not Games Workshop. They have their own website with a calendar which lets you when is best to book tables. Doesn't seem like I have a report - here's Panic's - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/313437.page I've played one tournament in Maelstrom, which is also a lovely venue. not as spacious as Warhammer World, and in Matlock rather than Nottingham proper, but still a good venue. I don't know anything about the booking procedure/costs though. I'd certainly be up for being involved in organising a second Silver Sorcerer, be it writing rules packs, playing, keeping scores or booking the bloody thing. Maybe the few Dakkites who don't play 40k would be up for being involved as scorekeepers and the like? We had a few people local to Nottingham pop down just to say hello last time.

I'd be very happy to travel to an event at Maelstrom. The only downside with Maelstrom is the low quality coffee (£1 for instant Nescafe -- yuck) but the beer is good...
For London, best bet is probably to piggyback on a larger event, like Dragonmeet or Salute. Meet up in a pub the night before, maybe for boardgames rather than minis games, and get your 40K and Infinity fix on the day of the con. I usually go to Dragonmeet most years anyway, despite living in north Wales, and I hope to get to Salute one year.

I'd be up for Nottingham, still waiting for replies on costs though. UK tends to shut down over the christmas period, so will probably get a response after New Year.
Game wise, 40K is fine, but I could probably only stretch to a 1000pts (although an SC or two might take me further for minimum cost / effort)

I'm not just saying it coz I live here, but Northampton is the centre of the universe in the UK.
An hour from Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Cambridge, London, Oxford etc. etc.
I could possibly sort a convention space too, about 30yards from the LGS and Games Workshop
EDIT - and by convention space, I mean the backroom of the pub where one of the gaming clubs meet, there's also a subway next door and a Scream pub 30 yards away too.

I'm going up to Maelstrom either next week or the week after, so I'll find out what needs to be done to book an event there, and if it will cost anything.
As ArbitorIan suggested, if the event does go WH40K for any reason, I don't mind being a score-keeper / dogs body

For those who are at a loose end in terms of gaming, maybe this would be an opportunity (depending on venue) to demo some of the games that are out there.
I can run semi confident demo's of Firestorm Armada, MERCS and possibly Malifaux (Although with Malifaux I would be clinging to the rulebook for dear life!)
I can pony up at least two factions for the above games, and about 6 factiosn for Infinity, although I'm not confident enough to run the Infinity game but I could support with painted miniatures!

I could potentially have a crack at demoing KoW, though i've never played it before but the rules seem pretty straightforward (or they did in the last incarnation I checked).
Only downside is that I only have Elves... lots of Elves... So unless you're fine with proxying elves as dwarves, or if people can donate a few WHFB dwarf/empire/orc models, then it'd be Elves vs Elves and not very interesting

I'd also suggest you don't try to make less popular games a central event and do let the warhammer games, warmahordes and perhaps malifaux or flames of war have central stage, more people will have more of them.
You can allocate 'open gaming time' for the other games, but, if you want folks to have an interactive event, you'll need to go for the big games imo.

I can't really argue that GW and Privateer Press hold the top slot in terms of gamers playing their games. I would argue that Infinity has a larger following than Malifaux however.

Not in Bristol Vanguard, when I left, lots playing Malifaux (including several ladies, the aesthetic seems to be attractive to lady-nerds) but the infinity still all sat on the shelves unopened. But might well be different where you are.
I'd suggest getting space marines then aiming for a high elite style, perhaps death company heavy or descent of angels or grey knights. Using codex marine minis and 'counts as' should be your cheapest option. (assault on black reach terminators etc).
