Subject: The Suffering Servants - custom marine chapter

Hey guys, here's my custom marine chapter "The Suffering Servants" - I know white and gold might be a bit overdone in custom schemes, but I tried to make the white & gold in these look a bit dirtier and more flawed, rather than "perfect" Here are some pics: Group shot: Chapter Master: A Sternguard with some Marines: Another Sternguard: As a bonus, Hector Rex, who I painted in the same style and plan to use as a Captain/other HQ The Contemptor: Dreadnought: The Suffering Servants chapter The Suffering Servants are a fleet based-chapter of unknown founding origin. Though the chapter archives insist that they are descendants of the Dark Angels chapter, the Dark Angels themselves refute any such claims - perhaps not wanting to be identified with this unorthodox chapter, or perhaps a sign of foulplay with Imperial Records. None alive know. The Suffering Servants are afflicted with a peculiar disorder via a flaw within their Gene-seed - their Catalepsean node causes undesired effects on areas of the brain, causing marines of this chapter to have an overwhelming sense of guilt-driven duty. The flaw within the Gene-seed causes a Suffering Servant to find it difficult to distinguish between his own actions and those of other, similar beings (in this case - other marine chapters). Thus, each and every Suffering Servant feels the pain, shame and guilt of the failures of other chapters. Such a disorder is the reason for the unusually depleted chapter strength - The Suffering Servants are always fighting battles and serving penance for failures that are not theirs - even in the face of foes they know they have no hope in defeating. The chapter wears antiquated armour, long since robbed of its once astonishing golds and flawless whites, now dirty and tarnished. Maintenance is rarely performed upon the armour - the Servants not believing they have earned it. The Chapter Masters of the servants are known as the Grand Martyrs and are promoted from any rank based on their selflessness and perseverance. The majority die particularly young, even by space marine standards, by virtue of their tendency to attempt overly heroic feats - most of which are unsuccessful. The current Grand Martyr is Lenconius Celeritas, and has held the position for roughly 23 years - making him the second-longest serving Grand Martyr in recorded chapter history. They maintain poor relationships with most other chapters due to their reckless behaviour, but many admire them for their acts of courage - foolish though many of them may be. The chapter is also in possession of a Contemptor Dreadnought - a gift they claim was bestowed upon them by the Imperial Fists after successfully thwarting an Ork Waaagh that threatened a planet under their control. The Imperial Fists recall no such event, and, indeed, still hold dominion over all of their Contemptor Dreadnoughts - a fact proven by the toll of a hundred battles. Thanks

Thanks guys. The gold is done in a way I picked up from a guy on DakkaDakka - it's Iyanden Darksun, washed Devlan, Burnished Gold and washed devlan again.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I painted a Contemptor for them as well, although I feel it could have come out better it still does the job (tabletop army)

It's the Space Marine captain model with a tiny conversion - I used the eagle from the top of the standard rather than the normal Iron Halo

White and gold are by no stretch overdone in the custom colors world! Black red and gold, now that's overdone!
I love these guys. Your painting is very painterly, for lack of a better term, and the exaggerated shading is awesome. The lack of consistent basing kills me though! Also, you've got to drill out those barrels. Once that's done, these guys will look incredible. Great work!

Really, really nice! Love the scheme... My only criticism would be that perhaps that white needed a couple more layers before dirtying up. I don't know, mebbe that adds to it?

Actually, I think that's the perfect term (and a completely legitimate one, if the faculty of my university's Art History dept. are to be trusted). I was thinking along those same lines and as soon as I saw that word in your post something in my head went *DING!*
Eiríkr wrote:My only criticism would be that perhaps that white needed a couple more layers before dirtying up. I don't know, mebbe that adds to it?
I wouldn't change it, at all. Folks tend to cite remedies to common failings by course of habit, potentially ignoring more important considerations (in this case, I think your latter point, Eirikr, is closer to the mark). Up close, that painting looks a bit crude (well, maybe not crude, as I wouldn't want to make any comparison to my own brushwork quite so unfavorable ), but at arm's length these guys look more awesome than a lot of "better" painted models (the red cloth on the Hector Rex model is a perfect example, I think) by virtue of color selection and placement.
Under a magnifying glass, they're what most call "tabletop." On the actual table, I doubt that's the first word that would come to anyone's mind. Great stuff!

My word man, those are incredible. Great choice of paint scheme (and the gold looks absolutely fantastic). I give as much credit for coming up with out of the ordinary paint combos, as I do for the brushwork, hah hah. It takes a kind of thinking that I'm just not good at..
Really nice attention to detail. Your Rex model is completely amazing man. Absolutely love it. Can't wait to see your Raider. Keep 'em coming!

Oops, sorry, didn't realise. That's Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex, a Forge World model. It's under the Grey Knights section.
I've started painting a dreadnought using some weathering powders I bought to try out. Disaster so far. I'll see how it goes, though
Thanks a lot for the positive comments
