It's based on one of the classic early sci-fi series.
The "Barsoom" series by ER Burroughs, who also wrote Tarzan.

Outside of book circles it is fairly obscure. The average American, before this release, probably would probably be more familiar with Warhammer than the John Carter series.

They all are as far as I know.

American from the 19th century wakes up on Mars, shenanigans ensue. Fights monsters, saves princess, ect ect.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I am sure a 19th Century man had no problem with seeing blue skinned aliens - no culture shock there that I can see.
Will we be subject to the "white guy (hero) comes in and saves the day from the native inhabitants that apparently can't win by themselves" argument that has come up from the last few films like this one again (ie Avatar)? I hope not because JC looks pretty good.
Another that looks really interesting is Wrath of the Titans, but I will likely just wait for both to come out on DVD.
I loved those books and a lot of other Burroughs fare. Ever since I first read them back in the 80's, I've been hoping they'd be made into a movie, provided it was done right.
I'd advise anyone who likes this show to check out some of Burroughs other books, The monster men, the Moon Maid series of books, etc.
Be warned though, you'll have to look past the prevailing attitude of the times about white people being superior written into the books.

Yeah, there was also a lot of that in H. P. Lovecraft's work. Not much you can do about it but just gloss over it and just enjoy the rest of the story.
It is a movie inspired by the Barsoom series. John Carter (film) is based on A Princess of Mars. I'm not terribly impressed with the subject matter, it is planetary romance pulp.
Of course it's a lot easier to bring pulp to the silver screen than to do a proper HP Lovecraft film or even miniseries, sadly I will probably die before I witness one.

"The Last Samurai".
That's really all there is to say on the matter.

Frankly this review alone makes me want to see it. Being Big Budget has meant rehashed plot/storytelling simplicity. A big budget SFX movie with a complex plot line? Sign me up.

Complex as in screwed up, not as in intelligent and deep.
The original stories are simple, linear, early pulp fiction.
There's a lot of "romance" and spectacular weird things that can be put on screen from John Carter of Mars. The plot isn't one of them.
The trailers look like they've captured the look of Barsoom.

But...
Spoiler:
They didn't exactly win...in fact they were sort of winning before Tom Cruise showed up.

Went and saw this one today and I would Highly recommend it. It also makes a lot more sense than that travisty Avatar aka Death Wish 4 for liberals.
And yes the white outsider becomes the leader of the natives schtick is a well worn path in literature but that was the times it was written in, get over it.

No, but it is the height of hollywood stupidity and arrogance to suggest that Tom "I'd Like to Crash and Burn... In Your Ass" Cruise is the last samurai

He wasn't. The Last Samurai refers to Katsumoto and his Last Samurai.
"Crash and Burn...In your Ass" Cruise never claims to be a Samurai, though he respects and eventually mimics them in many ways. You'll notice though at the end he reverted back to his Western uniform rather than continue to wear the armour.

@Melissia as per your signature line, how would you evaluate the princess character as in strong characters, female? Just curious for your take when you get to see it.

I think this is a classic case of marketing not being in communication with production... The marketing/ad guys hear "Hey movie called "The Last Samurai," starring Tom Cruise, he's a white dude who gets captured by Samurai and goes native, and becomes The Last Samurai" when in reality his character is supposed to play the role of a participant-observer to events of the actual Last Samurai...

Woola was great. The fliers were awesome. Dejah Thoris was gorgeous. Much of the stuff that looked a bit wooden and fake in the trailers looked much better in the finished film. The bits and pieces of dialogue which seemed a little cheesy or cliched in the trailers came off better in the movie too.
I'm not entirely a fan of some of the stuff they added and things they changed, but other alterations (like the Therns, and how JC gets back and forth to Mars) worked quite well, I thought.

Like Sasori and Mannanhin, my wife and I enjoyed the movie. There were differences between the the book and the movie, but in a lot of cases, they enhanced the story.
