At least it won't be too much of a burn if the game folds since Matt/MWG is not fitting the entire bill.
The only issue I see is with so many miniatures games coming out, more so now with sites like indiegogo and kickstarter there is bound to be a complete collapse of some of these companies. Spartan Games, Games Workshop, CMoN, CB, Wyrd, Battlefront, Cipher, Privateer press Mantic and quite a few more.
Games Workshop is the big dog. Like it or not, they have been around a long time and have dominated the table top world for a long time. Probably will for another decade or more. I've been told GW's sales account from anywhere from 70% to 90% of non-historical miniatures games from various people and retailers (in terms of money and not customers). That pretty much means all those other companies have to fight for the scraps and slowly chip away at GW's control.
Privateer Press Seems to be the next big thing or the closes to it.
Not saying they can't do it, I hope they do, but seems like a monumental task to get involved in miniature wargaming. Not suggesting they have to be number 1 to be successful, just that trying to compete in a crowded small market will be tough.
At least MWG has an established loyal fan base preexisting, something other companies do not hate.
I don't see it as a bunch of companies collapsing, I think it's just a new way of getting the games you want.. like how MP3s changed the way a lot of people buy music. I think it will be business as usual for the guys already established, and the small companies out there can use crowd sourcing like Kickstarter to get their feet in the door and worse case, they can just do Kickstarter after Kickstarter for each new product and get them out there direct to the fans. It's a whole new business model, and with the amount of money Kickstarter projects are generating, it's proof that people want the stuff. Good projects get funded, bad ones don't. It's a way for small companies to get their product directly in the hands of their best fans, and cut out all of the middle men along the way. That means higher profits that can get put back into the company to afford bigger and better stuff next time.
This project is a great example of a good crowd sourcing project. They already have a great following just in general, so of course the vast majority of their fans are going to jump in and support them and get some great stuff in the process. They clearly planned out their campaign, the same way a big company would plan out a marketing campaign .. same thing applies here.
But it doesn't have to be just for new businesses. Spartan games has a great following for example.. if they did a kickstarter program for a new product line, they'd have great results too.
So, yeah, I don't think it's going to hurt any companies, as long as they all make good products.. even in a crappy economy, we're still throwing our spare change and then some to feed our gamer addictions It can only get better from here.
Well, I bit the lead and chipped in. They are already at $16,795!!!
I am pretty sure with nearly doubling their goal in less than 8 hours, they will be doing more than 5 minis. Which means I will get to pick and choose! Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I'll be donating 100 on my next pay check (2 weeks).
They have my confidence that they will get this produced. Matt is a hard worker and determined. Willing to go through growing pains. Weather or not I really like the game, I will have cool miniatures.
I can pretty much guarantee that the quality of sculpts will be up there with GW, Infinity, Mercs, PP, etc.
Matt has mentioned in a previous video, long ago to be competitive your minis have to have that standard.
Well good job that they are double that goal, I think they are seriously under-costing this. $10,000 I'm surprised that would get you 3 mins. This draws the question who is the sculptor that is giving there time for so little?

Were I a year further on in my career I would donate the 1,500 to get a mini named Ma55ter_fett.

Thats what I was thinking.
You never know how much a business venture is going to cost until you are too deep in the gak to turn back.

Cyporiean wrote:$2k per mini? that seems high.. Are they planning on going plastic or something?
Metal minis.
I believe it was a conservative estimate. He basically said he would try to get as much as he could out of whatever was donated while keeping the quality high.
Heh guys I am also looking at the mwg game Dark potential and just have to say " I have DARK POTENTIAL do YOU?' there are at 23363 dollars or pounds or whatever at the time of this post!!! I am so excited we need more people to know about this!!! Im trying to spread the word and obviously from this post you guys !!!!

Yeah it slowed down alot about 4 hours ago, its just trickling in now, but I mean they did double their goal so there's something to be said about that...on the first day
They say that's how these things go... mine was the same way (only like 1/4 of what they raised ) .. starts out huge, then slowly trickles down most of the campaign, and then a big surge at the end when everyone realizes it's almost over and they want all the goodies before it's too late.

Don't be a troll.
MWG does A LOT to support the table top community and they are asking for donations. If you don't want to donate, don't.
I hope they do well with this game. I purchase all of my stuff from MWG and appreciate everything they do for the community with all of their vids and advice to help out new players learn new games, and their bat reps are top notch.
Total Finecast models purchased: 5
Total models without Finecast issues out of those purchased: 0
... "Finecast"
If you own a business and you have an idea, you invest in it. Asking other people to do this is odd. Kinda thought it was an April fools joke but guess not. You are supporting them if you buy stuff from them.

Well, the 'kickstarter' method seems to be the new thing for small start-ups. I don't mind, and apparently $23k+ worth of donors don't mind either. Personally, I see this as a way for them to start a new investment without putting the core business at risk. If DP fails, at least MWG will still be around.

I can see why you would say this, but remember that those who contribute get models, so essentially you are pre-ordering the miniatures.
Some people see this as "begging" for money, but if that is the case, then anybody who tries to get customers into their store (online or offline) is begging for money. In this case people not only get miniatures, but get to feel like they are the part of the development.
And to answer the question about metal or plastic, we will most likely start with metal as it is cheaper to get off the ground. The $2000 per miniature includes all the concept art, illustration, sculpting, mold making, and production costs to get enough miniatures to cover what people should get as perks, and to have more miniatures on the shelf afterward to sell.
Considering all the rage about pre-order delays in the Defiance Games thread (where there is really no doubt that models are actually being produced) I certainly have to congratulate MWG for getting people to throw money at vague promises so eagerly.
The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.
I hope Matt and his team do well, You can see that this is his passion and if the game becomes a success or not i think Matt will hold true to his word and give out the miniatures as said.
New goal of 40,000! There's going to be a lot more than 5 miniatures now. Matt is asking the community what they'd like to see as far as starter sets and factions in the first run!
I like the ideas and artwork that you have out there so far.
I would love to get in on this deal, but I would also like you to put up some more donation options.
I have absolutely zero interest in your main site or videos (though I am sure they are well done) so I would love for you to add alternate rewards for the levels.
I would seriously consider the $250.00 donation level if it had more rewards from the game and its materials and none from the MWG site.
I hope this didn't come across too harsh, as that was not my intent at all. I would just like to see more rewards directly related to the game itself.
finally new challenge and when we make it to 40k (which we will with all the people who are contributing) I want the Beast as the starter set. Also if they are in the starter set I hope some of the animal figurines look really good\regal looking
