For those who may not be familiar with the phrase; throwing up a flag is when you openly display a symbol in hopes that another person will recognized its meaning and/or significance.

For example... I use a Games Workshop lanyard for my house keys and wear it around my neck in hopes that someone will recognize the GW name and logo while I'm out in public and strike up a conversation with me about the hobby. I'll also read White Dwarf in an airport, again hoping someone will recognize the magazine or content and strike up a conversation.

Do any of you throw up flags to hopefully meet other gamers? If so what kind of flags do you use?

I wear my GW lanyard to my government job in the hopes that someone on the metro will recognize it and I'll find a new opponent. So far, I have found one person in my office who recognized it, and is involved in the hobby.

A few of my friends have met other members of a website called "Bodybuilding.com" through wearing the "Misc" shirts or using the lingo associated with the forum. I've met a few guys on here that are also a part of that site simply because I recognized the humor and jokes they used regularlly.

I don't really show any signs that I play

I actually met a guy at church that plays 40k yesterday.
Our church group was working on a community landscaping project when we stuck up a convo because he over heard me saying "Dig for the emperor" under my breath.

Unfortunately, there's no GW t-shirts that are legally available really, unless you find some rare ones from old GW events/employees. I know a few folks have 40k tattoos for this sort of thing, but I don't really have any means of "flying the flag" as it were. Well, my Crimson Fists case has the :getout: frog on it, but that's only good for recognizing members of a single forum I frequent.

My leather jacket has a GW metal aqulia badge (the original BIG one, about 3" across), a Babylon5 EarthForce cloisonné pin, a "trust no-one" X-files pin and a "THINK" badge all on the same lapel.

I get the occasional "wha's tha' mean?" from people looking stupidly at the "think" one.

I get the occasional "cool badge" for the EF pin followed by "I want it, where can I get it?"

The rest don't get much comment.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

I also work in the government, but obviously not around you or I'd have struck up a conversation for sure

My lanyard is a DUke Nukem Forever lanyard and radioactive pin.
I also have one of those Brother Osrik Space Wolves limited edition Space Marines at my desk. (#1311 actually).

to this date not one person has recognized it. sadly, they haven't recognized Master Chief mini action figured right next to it. :(

My first car had a window decal of the Battletech House Davion emblem and license plate frame that read "Got `Mechs?" and I was pretty proud to be flying those two flags.

Unfortunately I only ever got two responses while driving that car. The first was from a father and son in a pickup who caught me at a traffic light and asked if I still played Battletech but before we could really exchange information the light changed and I never saw them again.

The second was a couple who misinterpreted the license plate frame and pulled up along side my car while I was (again) stopped at a traffic light to ask me if "Got `Mechs?" was a derogatory jab at Hispanic people.

Now I drive a better car and refuse to put stickers on it so my flag flying days are about over.

If there was a cool looking shirt associated with a game I played I would totally wear it, but 40k doesn't have crap and most Battletech stuff is either OOP by 10+ years or convention only swag that is hard to come by.

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

Actually, I do the opposite. I am a furtive/ closet gamer. At schools these days Warhammer becomes a source of extreme ridicule so I draw as little attention to myself as possible. It's not that I'm embarrassed per se...more that I just don't want to make life harder than it already is.

My car has a single sticker, for Miskatonic University. It's interesting to discover how pervasive Lovecraftians are.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

I throw a B.S. Flag every now and again.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I think it'd help if you occasionally yell Waaaghh! as loud as you can, preferably when you're near small children or when the wife's on the phone to her parents.

i like my gaming tee shirts and hoodys, i usually wear my halo hoody or tekken hoody, and if it's hot i bust out the doom tee shirt or id tee shirt or my new rage tee shirt...oh man thats a great idea....i should get an id hoody...oh that would be the bomb.
i dont' really care about people recognizing them tho, i just like the games or whatever nd i like the imagery and stuff like that, also its nostalgia for me and i always walk around happier with a doom shirt on for some reason

warhammer shirts would be good too, actually a guy on here was doing custom shirts that looked really good...i think i'll have a look nd maybe get a few.

I completely agree. I let my close friends know, and other people that play obvs, but otherwise it's another thing for people to pick at.
