What made you pick up your second army? (Multiple answers allowed)
Wanted to try something new.
Got bored with first army.
Wanted to paint something other than (color).
Wanted options beyond a single codex.
Left 40K and came back after selling the first army.
First army was destroyed in some fashion.
Liked other model range more once it was updated.
Current army suffered too much codex creep.
Don't have a second army.
New army grew from being an "Ally" army.

I started with Tau shortly after they came out (Must have been late 3rd). Left 40k for awhile, and my brother persuaded me to get back into it. Now I went with what I could get into with a minimum of expense, so I'm picking up Dark Angels.

I'll probably start picking up Tau again, At first just as an Ally Force, but might develop it into a full army.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Needed something for my tyranids to be swarming on my board like a diorama, naturally I chose the 3rd coolest race (behind Kroot and nids) orks.

You need an option of "really like the fluff" or something to that effect.

I started with Space Wolves and read their fluff and their constant enemy was the Thousand Sons. I started to read the Thousand Sons fluff and really liked it as well so I started an army.

Wanted to start getting into the game, really liked Necrons. I was advised to wait until their new codex hit to buy models. I said okay.

New codex hit, I started buying Necrons, got around 3k points and everyone in my local meta started complaining about how OP they were.

Not wanting to be regarded as TFG, I picked up Orks. Haven't had a chance to play with them yet (waiting to pick up more models so I have a full list) but if anyone starts complaining about those too I will beat them with a battlewagon.

EDIT: Grammurr.

I was inspired to collect a new army because of a book I read about them and that they had a different fighting style to the BT

Started Eldar. Loved my Eldar and did good as them, but their overall finesse and planning made them hard to play week after week and continue to have REAL fun with friends rather than having things get purely competitive. Originally had my second army as IG, got bored of them fast for multiple reasons. Hated playing THAT much horde, the units just don't have enough character, and in my local Meta they were almost an instant win button. I got Black Templars for the challenge, character of units, and the fact that I love me some Crusade era history. Loved playing them, they were the complete opposite of Eldar I had been looking for. Sold my IG to someone who now plays with us and buffed both armies up to ~3k Points.

Started nids. Got bored and went dark eldar. Liked them but got bored. Then got Orks. Love playing them. Then found out more about sisters. My original army I wanted to play. So started playing them. In love with sisters. Now started building a chaos army. Sisters are by far my favorite to play so to me they are "my" army. I'm also he only one that plays them. And people love playing me to see them in action. Last game was Orks vs sisters. Local tourny. Sisters dominated that day. So I'm trying to always increase my sisters army

Picked up Orks after IG because, well... Orks.

Seriously, do you need a reason to start an Ork army?

Started with Eldar, got a Space Marine army because I realized that as long as I was buying the starter boxes to get stuff with my rulebooks I did kind of have a 1,000pt Space Marine army already.

Started the game with Tau, started IG as allies (fluff-wise) because of the FW superheavies (especially the Marauder Destroyer). Then my girlfriend bought me a Hades drill for my birthday, and DKoK veteran spam became my primary army.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I started with Dark Eldar as a second army for a few reasons.
The great modelling possibilities, the chance to paint something other than red, the differences in gameplay and because the whole range of model has been updated and looked great.

I simply love the 40k universe too much to not have at least a small force of nearly all of the armies

So I work on like 5-6 armies at once

Allies is a good way to start another army, for example I have about 1750 of gk.

For a 2k tournie next year, Im getting some necron to put in with the knights, from there they will grow to be my second army.

Allies is so helpful, to play in bigger battles, as you can go 1k of marines and 1k of tau for example, instead of having to get 2k of one or the other.

It's often hard to get a game in for me so I got 2nd and now 4th and working on 5th and 6th armies and maybe a 7th if I get rich, just so I can play against myself. It's helped train me quite a bit and alot of fun! It's like playing chess against yourself and trying to outthink onself is quite hard actually.

Mostly for modeling reasons. First army was Tau, but by the time I had enough models to really play anything I had just kind of grown tired of the models, no real posing ability on anything (Fire Warriors just had the four or so default poses, Crisis Suits and Broadsides basically had the one way they could be posed with only minor variations). Moved on to Space Wolves, had an absolute blast assembling them - the Space Wolf kit is awesome, by the way.

Even after that, I still couldn't quite get my modeling fix on, so I jumped headfirst into Orks and found a near-permanent home there. Wound up "looting" a bunch of models, which is perfect for when you want to see how another army's models are assembled but can't afford to start them. Orks have become my all-time favorite army now, just because I love the models.

Beyond that, I did half-ass a Deathwing army using Space Wolf models, mainly because I hated that my Wolf Guard Terminators were gathering dust. I just use Logan Grimnar as a stand-in for Belial, since both units do the same thing to their respective armies (make Terminators troops). More recently, I threw together about 600 points of Blood Angels to use as allies for my Space Wolves, but they'll probably wind up as a full army eventually.

My Armies:
Kal'reia Sept Tau - Farsight Sympathizers
Da Great Looted Waaagh!
The Court of the Wolf Lords

Started with Chaos. When I started 40k, soon after 5th edition came out, I was torn between Necrons with their awesome robot stuff and the spikes of Chaos. So after a while, when the Necron codex came out, I decided to go Necrons.

Started with, amy my main army still is, Orks.

But I'm a gamer and one army was never going to be enough. So I trued Space Wolves. Every so often I try them again, but I really am useless at playing Imperium armies.

So I've stuck with the Xenos and gone for Necrons & Tyranids too.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.
