So I've been tossing around an idea of making an Apocalypse Unit that had a little more "Bite" than what's currently available... A shooty platform from the "Hive Mind" This bad boy would probably come in around 2500 points if I can stay on track and finish him. The idea came from several games where I would field a Hierophant, and it would promptly die from all of the shooting directed it's way. Then I added a Harridan to the mix, but that didn't seem to help either. Finally I got tired of it all and said I'm just going to build a bigger bug... and here is my attempt. I've been building this for a few weeks now and will update this blog with my progress.

Starting with 2" Foam

Drawing out the general shape

Roughing out the shape of the leg

Scale Photo next to some Tau

More Scale Photos - "titan belongs to my friend"

The other leg roughed out.

Next, draw out the basic shape

Now trim down to the lines

rough comparison

Final rough shaping

Next is the tail section...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here with an update... Started working on the Torso since the 2 halves of the tail section weren't glued together very well and needed to be re-done

Drawing out the shapes

Then the more refined shaping...

I split it into two pieces to start shaping the carapace

Rough Shaping on the Carapace - This is only one side of the Carapace Shell

Mock up for scale with the legs

Whoa, that is some serious business.

Great progress!

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

**From the Blog 12/01/12

Been a slow day at work, so I got a little more done... Some would say I'm a little bit OCD... :

Hollowed out the cavity for the connector piece for the Torso and the Tail. This part was very difficult and took a lot of cutting, sanding and digging to get all of the pieces to fit. I am using a Carnifex that's assembled - see photos, and I can't really get in there to draw/measure the piece. Plus I wanted to adjust the stance a little so it's definitely standing more than hunched over like a regular Carnifex.

Enjoy...

Here are the connector pieces with a rough sanding on them

Here is the Torso bottom half shaped with ribs and arms

The Connectors sanded and dry fit

Here are some mock ups with the "Model" in for a scale reference... this is with the Carnifex normal stance

This stance is more of what I'm going for...

Enjoy...

update for today....

Started working on the Head and here was my first attempt using the 4x scale for a Tusked Carnifex head

I thought it was too small, so I went back and cut out a larger one and here is the results.

And here is one half of the head mocked up on the body

I have a surprise for the head that a buddy of mine (Mark) sculpted for me but I didn't grab a photo before packing everything away for the day... but it really completes the head. Still trying to decide if there needs to be a big nasty tongue sticking out of it's mouth since it's going to have Bio-Acid... What do you think?

Anyway, next I started shaping out the weapons, I'm thinking of a variant of the Heavy Venom Cannon called the Super Heavy Venom Cannon (I know it's not very creative) and the Heavy Bio-Cannon. Here are the rough shapes

SUPER HEAVY VENOM CANNON

HEAVY BIO-CANNON

And one for scale

Here is some rough shaping

That's all I could do today, hopefully I'll get more done this week. Need to finish up the other half of the head, finish these weapons, the other pair of weapons (Left side) and start knocking out some of that "boxy" shape that the Torso & Tail have.

Thanks for following

Worked on the Super Heavy Venom Cannon a little last night, I'm not liking how it's coming and may have to scratch it and start over.

This is amazing! And in it's pink foamy state it looks like it could be a Cuddlefex. Man, having a plush Carnifex would be awesome. You cannot deny this.

In any case, definitely looking forward to seeing this come together! Totally impressed!

Looks awesome. Just be sure to coat it in something before using any sort of spray primer. Wouldn't want to see it get eaten up by the paint, as tends to happen when aerosol paints are used on styrofoam.

From the Blog (12-05-12)

Got a chance to work on the arms/guns today. I spent some time yesterday picking out bits and getting ideas from people. After spending some time with the arms, I decided to go with the original set of weapons that I had cut, since the bits seemed to fit so well.

So here is the Super Heavy Venom Cannon mock up:

Here is the Heavy Bio-Cannon

Everything will have to be matched up with green stuff and filler to make it seem a little more organic, but it's laying out the textures that I wanted to get accomplished in this step.

Been working a lot lately, but I have an update on the MegaFex...

I got the hard coating from a local distributor that helped develop it. It's called Styrospray 1000. It's a 2 part process that hardens in about 20 minutes and fully cures in 24-48 hours. It's hard enough to tap with a hammer an not crack, but flexible to resist breaking. You can brush, spray or roll it on.

I spoke with the manufacturer and he said that it will serve as an adhesive for holding the bones in, a filler to soften the gaps and the final hard coat.

Steps:
carve, sand and shape foam: If you're using the Pink foam then you won't have to seal it, if you're using EPS then you need to seal it first with the Styrospray sealer.
brush on Latex Primer "Kilz"
mix & brush on the Styrospray 1000
let dry
sand rough spots
apply greenstuff details
prime with desired primer
paint with choice of paint

I'm going to try and do a sample piece soon and see how easy this material is to work with. The manufacturer said that it is going to work great.

About how much does the Styrospray cost? Is it a kit? Where did you purchase from? Sounds promising as I tend to do alot of things with foam.
