We've decided that we wanted to get a good game to play together on occasion. Im really up for most things, but the wife.....not so much. I was thinking she could probably get into playing a FPS or 3rd person shooter, as we used to play a Resident evil shooter on the wii some time ago. (It was OK personally, but she enjoyed it) But Im not limiting the search to just a shooter style. I was thinking something actiony as well could be fun for her. So ideas? Because Im really drawing a blank, as I dont really play video games enough to spit ideas out. Here are the catches.

*needs to be multiplayer IE needs to be played with 2 controllers
*needs an easy option, so she can learn to play instead of being thrown into the meat grinder.
*needs to be able to ramp the difficulty up a notch or 4 once shes good at killing mofos.

Cmon DAKKA gamers, dont let me down!

Borderlands/Borderlands 2 co-op splitscreen.

I would say LotR: War in the North, but it can be sorta rough until you get some levels on you.

Tomb Raider: Temple of Light has a really fun 2 player co-op.

LotR: War in the North is a very good example, that is probably the one you want to spend money on. It has great split screen, good gameplay, and although it can be slightly aggravating in being tricky sometimes, it isn't TOO hard. It is a great game, and you would really enjoy it.

Borderlands 2. It was the first videogame my girlfriend's ever played and now she's addicted. It doesn't have an easy mode, but it's pretty forgiving, and really funny and entertaining too. Only downside is the menus are a little annoying to navigate in splitscreen, as they didn't really resize them.

I actually got my wife to sit and play Gears of War splitscreen. FWIW she didn't complain and seemed to have fun. She's not into console gaming at all either.

Well we have Halo3(its my sons) So we could play that. BUT after telling her some of the suggestions in here, she bought another controller and Borderlands game of the year edition for us to play. Apparently she liked the looks of it. So! Thanks for the advice all, Ill keep them in mind for later ideas

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

My wife and I enjoyed playing the Fable games coop. Fable III is much better in terms of camera control though - Fable II can sometimes get you stuck at the edge of the screen (though there is a "teleport to player 1" button).

Portal 2 is excellent and has a coop mode, though my wife doesn't really do first person games so hasn't played it. She does quite enjoy helping me solve the puzzles even if it makes her dizzy sometimes

We started playing Halo together but she is not really into it so we only played a couple of levels so YMMV.

My wife loves the GTA games but sadly they are not coop - however your wife may enjoy them if she wants a third person action/shooter/story driven game.

Give Gears of War a whirl. The controls have a bit of a learning curve but it's fun once you've got it down.

Borderlands is a lot of fun.
Gears of war is great for co op.
Portal 2 is the greatest co op game ever in my opinion but doesn't have much replay value.

This is exactly my list, sans L4D...but that's only because I'm not a huge Left For Dead fan

I agree with both Borderlands and LOTR. Also, bring out the LEGO games too: Star Wars for the Sci-Fi, Batman for the Superhero, LOTR for the fantasy, Indiana Jones for the adventure, or even Harry Potter for the "I hate my life and should suck and die" gamers. Also, Hunted might be another good fantasy, but it's hard as hell. War in the North is easy by comparison. Also, if you can find it and like Super Heroes, Justice League Heroes (made by the same guys as LOTR:WitN) is outstanding, as is the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The second is flashy, and the first part of the story is good, but the character "creation" is weak in comparison to the first. I'm a Marvel guy though, and I think the DC heroes game is better. Only downsides are that it's a bit on the short side (8-10 hrs) and there are 3-4 levels that the game picks the characters for you.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I believe it is supposed to, and it is from Gearbox so the odds are good that it will.

Oh another acade game: Castle Crashers. It's a 2.5-D brawler with really cartoony graphics but it's also really brutal. Awesome music, tons of replay value. It's great.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

What sort of styles are we looking at.. as to games I have played with my wife and we've had fun with.

Dynasty Warriors 7 (the rest aren't worth bothering with, avoid 6 like the plague)
Any of the Lego games, can't go wrong really, Lord of the Rings is the best of the lot, but Harry Potter years 5-7 and Pirates are really good as well.
Carcassonne XBLA strategy game, can be a lot of fun.
Minecraft, I've not played it to check, but apparently it has a split screen multi-player on the XBLA version.
If you can track them down.. either Marvel Ultimate Alliance games are a blast as well.

Splosion Man, it's a goofy little platformer, and it has up to 4 person co-op, it's a fun little game. But can get crazy difficult.

We've been playing Borderlands on and off the past couple days. Its ok, though I could be honest and say there are a couple aspects of the game so far that kindda annoy me a bit. But I woke up this morning and the wife told me on the way out the door, that she bought a Gears of War triple pack while I was sleeping and itll be here in a few days So we will have that as well
