These licences are like rats, everywhere!

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/ninth-studio-announces-warhammer-licensing-deal/0112851

Canadian developer Roadhouse Interactive has become the latest studio to get its hands on an official Warhammer license.

The company has reached an agreement with Games Workshop to make a side-scrolling Space Marine game for smartphones and tablets.

“The work we have seen to-date from Roadhouse makes us extremely confident that this new mobile title will be a fantastic addition to the range of digital games we are building,” Games Workshop’s head of licensing Jon Gillard stated.

“We are extremely pleased that Tarrnie and the guys at Roadhouse Interactive, who are both veteran developers and very familiar with our IP, are going to help expand the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the hands of mobile gamers with this unique take on it.”

MCV revealed last week that games Workshop has struck deals with seven development partners in the last nine months alone for games based on the various Games Workshop brands.

Today’s deal with Roadhouse is the ninth we know of, joining existing agreements with Creative Assembly, Slitherine, Zattikka, Rodeo, Full Control, Cynanide and Nomad Games. EA’s Mythic studio is closing down its F2P Warhammer title at the end of the month.

Is there any new game not being a facebook / smartphone game?

Yeah, non of these smartphone/facebook games interest me at all. A console game would be a whole different story, I am ashamed to say I would probably end up getting it no matter how bad it turned out to be as I love the background so much!

I have no problem with GW giving away its licence like these, I actually quite like it as it should help expand the universe a bit. Hopefully it will lead to bigger and better companies picking up the licences and we will get another game like Space Marine which I enjoyed quite a bit (even the multiplayer despite the constant glitches).

I always used to think it would be great to have a lot of different GW video games, but now I'm starting to feel like they're just grabbing licensing cash from whoever wants to pay it...

This, pretty much. Talk about the same company that said they don't do sales because it would devalue the brand. Yeah, pooping out licences to everyone will surely raise it!

Facebook and mobile games are relatively easy to monetize and pump for quick cash.

I suspect that is why we see this trend.

I can't wait for the vertical scrolling Chibihawk blaster game (41,941 - the battle of Midway XII?) to be released. It will prove beyond doubt that GW are now printing licences on confetti and distributing them as such!

Naturally I will be buying it no matter what.

On the bright side more games in development mean more possibility of a real cracker.

Oh boy, more crapware bearing the GW brand. At this point I pretty much expect any Warhammer-related video game to be garbage until proven otherwise.

Crapware, eh? Many of us appreciate the time killers on our phones. If they did an Imperial Guard Angry Birds I'd play it.

And FYI, Roadhouse Interactive has a fairly solid reputation. Family Guy Online was really well done, and Mechwarrior tactics looks very cool.

And BTW, Dawn of War is a really great RTS, Space Marine for PS3/Xbox was GREAT, and even the 'throw away game" Kill Team was really fun.

Those were real games, by real developers - made back before GW started handing out the OK to develop like crazy.

I'm considering them all suspect till seen as well, a policy I apply to most Apps/FB games, etc

And Space Marine was far from great.

Reds, you should have left the comments about the games Roadhouse HAS developed.

Mechwarrior Tactics looks great.
Family Guy Online is really fun.

They not be AAA titles, but they're well produced. To simply call them crapware is ignorant and uncalled for. The same happened to the last company (Slitherine) that obtained the license.

Seriously. It takes a 4 second google search to determine that these companies DO, in fact, have solid development history. Take that 4 seconds before spouting off about things of which you have no knowledge.

Gotta say I don't mind them releasing a bunch of games I have no interest in (phone/tablet games) in much the same way I don't mind them releasing Eldar or High elf models, all I care about is that they release some games that I do think I'll like. So they released 9 licences and one was to Creative Assembly - I say well done GW, top work to them, I love all Creative Assembly games and I imagine that what they will do with the Warhammer licence will be amasing.

Ummm... GW had a reputation for horrible licensed games before Dawn of War. They have always been hit or miss.

But come on, Pin-up Power: Sports of full contact burlesque!

That is the sign of QUALITY from this studio right there

Oh and for the record, I like Space Marine. It was good game. Not a great game, but a good game.

I don't get it. All the recent GW video games have been great-- Dawn of War II, Space Marine, and Kill Team were all excellent. What garbage games have been coming out that I haven't noticed?

The recent "miss" games in my opinion are several years old and on the Fantasy side. The WAR MMO and Dark Omen were both poor games. The good games were really only coming out of Relic. Now that they have been shaken up by the collapse of THQ, GW is having to try new companies.

Your apologetic nature aside, thing critically for a second Kingsley. What do those three games have in common?

Well-renowned developers? Check.
Big publisher backing? Check.

What does this recent damn-near fire-sale of GW IP appear to be? Selling the license to anyone who will have it.

There's a reason why we're worried.

On the slightly less dark side.... It might mean they'll be less grumpy about films in future, after they've milked games.

Except Relic did not have a big backer till right before they released Dawn of War. They were only acquired by THQ several five months before DoW was released. Having a big backer does not mean the game will be a success, in fact it can be a detriment. There are plenty of stories of EA and Activitison sticking their nose in studios development.

Mythic was a well renowned developer backed by EA and WAR was poor MMO. Your criteria means nothing.

Plus, GW is likely charging a premium for these licenses, so there must be some money backing these studios.

Relic had a little came called Homeworld, which is still commonly seen as one of the greatest space strategy games of all time. Not even Sins of A Solar Empire has come close since.

Yes, but it didn't have a big company backing it was my point. HBMC seems to think that only large companies are able to put out good games by the criteria he is listing.

Yes it did - it was backed by Sierra, which was a very large publisher at the time.

But I agree with the sentiment, nonetheless. Small studios can release awesome games, and furthermore, bigger studios can release big, stinky turd games.

Sierra was on it's deathbed at the time and wouldn't really call it a big publisher. I suspect the sale to THQ was to save the studio from being taken down with Sierra.

But none the less we are in agreement that just because these licenses are being given to small studios isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Now the sport of full contact burlesque, can be a cause for concern in some people eyes. Or it can be awesome in the eyes of others <_<:
