Oh boy, more crapware bearing the GW brand. At this point I pretty much expect any Warhammer-related video game to be garbage until proven otherwise.

I don't get it. All the recent GW video games have been great-- Dawn of War II, Space Marine, and Kill Team were all excellent. What garbage games have been coming out that I haven't noticed?

The recent "miss" games in my opinion are several years old and on the Fantasy side. The WAR MMO and Dark Omen were both poor games. The good games were really only coming out of Relic. Now that they have been shaken up by the collapse of THQ, GW is having to try new companies.

Not sure how everyone missed this little nugget?

Dark Omen......recent?.......a poor game?

DO was all kinds of awesome, between it and Close Combat 2 and Xcom Apocalypse I might have had more than 5 minutes to finish the course work of my third year at Uni!

Except Relic did not have a big backer till right before they released Dawn of War. They were only acquired by THQ several five months before DoW was released. Having a big backer does not mean the game will be a success, in fact it can be a detriment. There are plenty of stories of EA and Activitison sticking their nose in studios development.

Mythic was a well renowned developer backed by EA and WAR was poor MMO. Your criteria means nothing.

Plus, GW is likely charging a premium for these licenses, so there must be some money backing these studios.

You know how the first thing I said in my post was "think critically".

Anyway, to get back on point - My criteria means nothing? No, not really. No where in my post did I leave out the possibility that a game could be poor, only that - if we think critically for a second - a renowned studio with a good publisher behind it has a better chance of releasing a good product than a these billions of tiny indie developers. Relic were a studio with a history of critically acclaimed games. Some of the developers GW appear to be signing up don't appear to have much of a record of anything and there are so many of them in such a short space of time that a number of are worried that this 'scatter gun' approach to developing games is more of a grab at license money than any real decision to make games.

GW loves their license money, it's helping their bottom line as their sales volumes drop and constant price increases keep them even. So more of that money is what all these different developers look like, almost as if there's a quantity over quality aspect to this mad dash to license every property they can.

Yeah, I did see that. The 'recent' part made me laugh. Decided to leave it though. Can't speak to its quality as I never played it.

1. Not irony.
2. Spelling has nothing to do with the point being made.
3. Nice try.

I never actually said that. Please don't claim I did. I was making a comparison between tiny never-heard-of-them studios who act on their own vs developers of note backed by publishers people have heard of and which was more likely to produce better results.

Big publishers don't = good results though, and even good developers can turn out a crap game.

I think this fits GW's model of targeting younger gamers. Veteran gamers will probably still pick it up too, but for kiddies who want to take part in the 'GW Hobby' but can't afford the big stuff yet, this keeps them on the hook as it'll probably be pretty cheap compared to most GW items.

Unless this is released under their Finecode program where they charge ridiculous prices for shoddy digital offerings...

You're right, there is a great difference between IP infringement and hiring out their IP.

Perhaps though, what he was raising was that these appear to be cheap low end games and prior to this, I remember GW talking about WAR and how they could only let their IP out to the 'right company, who will produce a really quality game' and this extremely rapid sale of IP to a great many companies in succession does not speak of that, rather it speaks of needing to get the profit margin up fast before the next financial report.

Ok at 1 licence this is cool, at 3 it's a little strange, at 5 it's very strange. At *9* something has to be wrong, they must be after a quick cash grab to cover recent losses/pad out the next financial report, there is simply no other reason they would do this.
In the past they have been very careful about their IP and only recently let Relic play with it on proper consoles and PC. A company like GW who is afraid of modern technology and deletes their facebook after some negative feedback DOES NOT just start handing out licences for these sort of things because all of a sudden it sounds like a good idea, and especially not without doing 1 or 2 to test the market first.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Maybe GW are finally starting to think that being behind everyone is a bad thing.

I mean, Warcraft and Starcraft could have been Warhammer and 40k games if GW licensing had not made a huge mistake. After all, Blizzard wanted to make Warhammer the video game at the time.

But if they let these mobile companies develop stuff, they might hit one of the "markets" with a defining game of their own.

I don't know if they are changing to some forward thinking or not - maybe they got an agent who knows this type of stuff. But I bet they have some form of final say on the games being released. So they can let these companies pay some money, see what they develop and figure out if it should come out. Then if they get lucky, they might have a "hot" property (I imagine they think Angry Birds hot, say with a game called the Guns of Tanith).

Really H.B.M.C., not really disagreeing. It may be a cuase for concern. But maybe somehow it means someone finally pulled their head out of their pants. Might take a while to find out though....

EDIT: @H.B.M.C.: Jesus, how did you get over 20,000 posts anyway! Saw when you did that - so congrats, but geez, you live here or something? ;-)

Just to point out wargaming.net has no publisher/backer and has over 6 million players. Robert Space Industies has no publisher and yet broke all the funding records on kickstarter.

Ok these little games won't make them millions but it will get there IP about plus I wondr if the creation of all these digital products will help strengthen their copy writes elsewhere.

Its win win get money and increase your IP

Your apologetic nature aside, thing critically for a second Kingsley. What do those three games have in common?

Well-renowned developers? Check.
Big publisher backing? Check.

What does this recent damn-near fire-sale of GW IP appear to be? Selling the license to anyone who will have it.

There's a reason why we're worried.

Hmmm... that seems to say that right there that.

I'm blaming the Hobbit.

"We paid out of the nose for this new Hobbit license and it's sold terribly. What can we do to make up for it in our reports?" "Lets make someone else pay out of the nose for licenses to our games!" "Hey, how about 9 other people?"

"A situation is often considered to be ironic (situational irony) if there is an 'incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result.'"

I would consider the actual result of your trying to be a hardass while managing to minorly screw up in the process to be situattionally ironic myself
And thank you, the best reward of a nice try is a nice result!

Seriously though, saying someone is "not thinking critically" because it's slightly more intellectual sounding than "i think you're being dumb" does not make the statement no longer a gibe. "Your apologetic nature aside" is also fairly rude to say. Can't we all just get along, HBMC?
