Can be for relative points but who is the best character in a 1v1. From personal experience I would say Angron. I charged him into that weird apocalypse formation of the 5 space marine captains and challenged 3 consecutively (splitting 2 attacks between them), anyways insta-gibbed all of them and got +3 attacks. He also wiped out the unit which meant he got another attack as well for a total of 11 strength 9 attacks on the charge!
Horus would probably beat him though and skulltaker is great for his points. Skarbrand could be good as well.

Against things that can be ID-ed, a daemon prince of nurgle with a balesword.

Otherwise, calgar.

A Necron with mindshackle scarabs is indeed a potent challenger.

Great Unclean One with:

Greater Rewards:
Balesword (Instant Death)
Feel No Pain (4+)

Biomancy Powers:
Iron Arm
Warp Speed
Endurance (just for It Will Not Die)

He can be S9, T10. 8 Attacks, Eternal Warrior, Poison (reroll failed to Wound rolls) and causes Instant Death.

Best counter strategy is to avoid an assault with him, something that isn't hard since he is Slow and Purposeful, and only has a 6" move. But since we're talking Challenges...

EDIT: Necron Lord with MSS isn't going to inflict enough Wounds on this guy before he passes a LD test and kills him in 1 round.

Unless Iron Arm doesn't go off one round, and you ID yourself with the Balesword.

Well you could always just swap that Greater Reward for something else before the game starts. Personally I never take the Balesword and pray not to get the Death Incarnate Warlord Trait whenever my opponent has MSS.

Gotta say it's gotta my a Necron Lord with Scarabs and Scythe. He's less than 100 points and he can take on anyone in the game between S7AP1 and Mindshackles.

If you want to spend a little more, toss a pokeball on him and he can finish off a bio-titan if he has to.

Crowe. WS 8 + I6 + rending on a 4+ means 90% of the characters you challenge are dead before they get to swing back. The hard part is just getting having him survive long enough to get into combat.

drazhar, because hey, who doesnt want a minimum of 4 str 4 or 6(?) AP 2 attacks at ws 7 with preferred enemy in a challenge with all rolls to wound of 6 allowing another attack and a 2+ armour save with any roll of 6 adding another attack? also lelith against anything str 4-5 or less.

No, no , no you all are doing it wrong! The best character in a challenge is the most weak ass inexpensive character possible that holds up some combat monster for a round!

+1 to that, guardsman Bob stands to even an unnamed IC, then he has done extremely well.

And that's why a necron lord isn't the best. Yes, half the time he causes you to punch yourself, but half of the time he doesn't. 50% chance of winning is basically his upper limit.

Because if he doesn't get MSS off, then there's really nothing very special to him. He's basically just a thunder hammer/storm shield terminator with a couple extra wounds. Beefy, but far from unbeatable.

I have found a number of characters are good because they have amazing saves. I MSS Mephiston for something like 3 turns and he wasn't strong enough to actually kill himself! im not sure if that was just bad luck though....

That discussion was about ICs, so Swarmlord wasn't counted. Yes he'd probably win though.
