This thread will be about my Iron Warriors army:

The Iron Warriors 27th Grand Company, 'The Siege Machine'

First up, a bit of background.

Many a year ago now, in April 2001, I acquired White Dwarf issue 256. In this issue is Index Astartes: Iron Warriors.

I read that article and have adored the Iron Warriors ever since. It would be a few years before I started my Iron Warriors proper, as I didn't have much skill or experience at painting or modelling back then.

My first attempt at making some Iron Warriors was probably around 2003/2004. There were 20 Chaos Space Marines, and they weren't up to much. All the models had a thick boltgun metal paint job, blood red lenses and a snakebite leather base, and that's it. No black shoulder pads, no gold trim, no hazard stripes and no basing at all.

I eventually sold them, keeping one because I liked the heavy bolter! You'll see him a little later.

After more inspiration, namely Storm of Iron, Dead Sky Black Sun, and the 'Will of Iron' White Dwarf articles, as well as some great Iron Warriors threads on the internet, I would begin again around 2005/2006, and I have been slowly working on my Iron Warriors ever since.

In those years, my skill and execution has improved a lot, and my models will have some conversions, a bit of sculpting here and there, and a cleaner paint job.

--------------------------------------------------

My army will not necessarily be following the official rules, but I don't play anyway.

The 27th Grand Company will be similar in composition to a Space Marine battle company, in that it will be built around the main body of 100 Chaos Space Marines.

Warsmith Sturm is the commander of the 27th Grand Company, and he has 5 lieutenants under his command; Zaon, Krieger, Atlas, Hauser, and Strausser, as well as his champion Obsidian.

--------------------------------------------------

Phew. Now for some pictures!

I'll post some completed imagery before some of my wip models.

Warsmith Sturm

This model has had many revisions, but I'm very happy with the final appearance.

Next to a regular marine for size comparison.

Stay tuned, I will try to update this thread regularly.

Tactical Squad 1

These marines may look a bit shiny, but I'll give my Iron Warriors a black wash sometime to counter this.

Lieutenant Zaon

The servo arm is from an Imperial Guard Techpriest Enginseer.

Great to see some Iron Warriors, and I like them so far -

As an aside, some of the paint on the first set of photos looks a little grainy and uneven - I had that problem with some old paints I was using that had dried out a bit, which may be something to be wary of?
The latter ones look fine though

Some good conversions, and a strong sense of movement and menace about them, I think this army is going to be really impressive!

An interesting choice to use so many Loyalist parts. I rather like it though. It's rare to see a Chaos army that's relatively clean and lacking in spikes and pointy bits.

Cheers fellas!

Yeah, if you spot some grainy/crusty painting in this army, then the model has probably had a repaint or two, or is from a time when I was more of a painting rookie.

I kind of don't mind it though, as it shows my progression as a hobbyist.

Hmm, I don't think I really realised the amount of loyalist parts used at the time, I just made them out of whatever bits I fancied!

Although you could say that it represents scavenged armour parts, as 10,000 years of war would take its toll.

Dreadnoughts

Dreadnought 1

Dreadnought with tracks from an Ork Wartrakk.

Dreadnought 2

In progress. Left leg armour is fashioned from card, as the original was used for some conversion or another, with defiler face plate.

Painted. Spikes are made from cocktail sticks.

Dreadnought 3

In progress. AOBR dreadnought with jewellers chain and defiler face plate.

Painted.

The purity seal was too embedded in the model to remove, so I simply painted it red to give it a more sinister look, an 'impurity seal' if you will.

Next up, something I think most of you won't have seen before.

A scratch built Decimator Knight. And I call it a Knight for a good reason. When the GW model came out, I liked it, but for £50+ it's not a very big model... and I wanted it Knight sized.

So I decided to build my own Decimator, at 200% size of the original, so mine will be about 8 inches tall.

I scratch build using cereal box card, and if you know how to use it, it can be a viable material. When I first started scratch building, I used PVA, but this makes card prone to warping and takes ages to dry. I now use super glue and layering to make models strong.

My Decimator will be outfitted with a Butcher Cannon and a Soulburner Petard. I will make the Soulburner Petard using a part from a metal Tiger tank cannon.

Some of you in the UK may remember this from a few years ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rcHISx6O-w

I had no intention of buying all the mags, but the first issue came with the cannon, which I thought would make a great Earthshaker cannon, and it cost me only £1! (would have been 50p, but it was a back issue).

The whole thing is too long to be an Earthshaker cannon, so the shorter piece will be the Soulburner Petard, and the longer piece will be an Earthshaker cannon which you will see a little later.

Pic time!

Decimator Knight

Detachable arm joints, for ease of painting and for potential arm swaps.

Tiger tank cannon piece on the left arm. Also, to give you an idea of scale, the MDF base is the size of a CD (120mm).

The Butcher Cannon is about the length of a Rhino!

Here are my rivet makers. A paper hole punch for large rivets, and a hole punch with multiple sizes from small to large, it is also quite a pain to use.

Some pics of the finished build. My Decimator has 231 rivets!

I can't wait to see the Knight finished. Looks promising.

And I love the Dread with tracks

Decimator Knight Cont.

It has been a bit delayed, but here it is. My scratch built Decimator is now painted!

My scratch builds are normally a riot of colour, but a lick of paint really brings it all together.

I had to get a new paint or two, because my snakebite leather and my custom gold mix finally dried up after the hot summer here in the UK. I'm still rocking the black flip tops.

Time for some more older marines.

This is the one remaining of the original 20, as the thick paint job will show! The heavy bolter has been replaced with an auto cannon, and he has been given a new left shoulder pad.

The Decimator Knight it's awesome. Great Work!
But the head?

Earlobe deep in doo doo

The Decimator is excellent although the head is a bit wonky. A Defiler head or an old Warlord Titan head would look far better.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I'm afraid my first though was that the head doesn't look right, other than that, unless I physically handled it, I probably couldn't tell it wasn't plastic!

WHAT!? Wonky? I don't really see it myself...

And a Defiler head would look ridiculous on this, it would look like a shrunken head!
If I may point you to an earlier picture, the Dreadnought has a Defiler face plate.

I appreciate the feedback, but as far as I'm concerned the Decimator is finished, weird head or not!

Here it is, more IW!

Rhinos

Two of the Rhinos here were my first 40K scratch builds, and have had a few modifications over the years.

One such modification is the addition of IW icons. I sculpted this vehicle icon, then moulded and cast it with Milliput.

Rhino 1

Old progress shots.

Obligatory modellers hand shot.

All pics from here on were taken with the help of my new daylight bulb. No longer am I restricted to daytime to take Warhammer pics!

I really like the scratch builds that you have posted. Conversions are always one of my favorite parts of the hobby.

I too like the use of lots of older loyalist bits. My plague marines have similar scatterings of loyalist bits. I figure that being all rotted, plague marines would not want all the spiky bits o get tangled up in.
Likeing the work. Keep at it.

It's time for something big, a scratch built Baneblade!

Excuse the grainy pictures, these where taken a good while ago with a bad camera.

Baneblade

Demolisher Cannon mounting.

Sponsons and mini turrets.

The brown stuff is homemade filler, made from sawdust and PVA glue. Works great for scratch building, and is cheap. It dries rough though, so it requires sanding after it has dried.

Main turret recess, to allow the turret to move.

Moveable turret.

More Baneblade to come.
