Beyond the Beltway

I orginally posted much of this material on the Official Infinity Forum. In the hope that it may inspire a few people to play the game, or at least consider playing it, I'm posting it here. This is my terrain for the Bourak (desert) board that I have been slowly building.

First the Inspiration. I am thinking about the Painted Desert, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon... etc, and also The National Museum of the American Indian, a 1/200 version of which I built for the NOVA Open 2012 Narrative Tournament, show in the following photos.

For the first building on the Bourak Board, I built this.

A close-up of the rooftop details

I am in the process of finishing several of the smaller buildings for the board. They need paint. The half building is meant to be placed along a table edge. I'm not so sure I'll keep the rooftop garden.

For scatter terrain, I built this. I call it an Urban Oasis

I also built several more pieces to accompany it. All will be painted to match, and two of them will get water effects.

I also made these in lieu of trees, Communication Arrays ( I think that's what they could be). The effect is supposed to be red marble. It doesn't photograph so well ( Or I don't take photographs so well.) I have a few more ideas for them, and the basic design.

Here is the tabletop I built for it, using floor tiles. It is a heavy tabletop. I like the lip around the sides. Keeps things on the table (like dice...)

I'll post more photos when I get more work done-- which may not be for a while-- I need to paint some minis... as you have seen There will be two more of the large buildings, and some more scatter like the Comm Arrays.

Thanks for looking. Now go play some Infinity.

N.B. Moderators/Moderatrices. Does this belong here or in the Painting and Modelling forum? If the latter, please move. Otherwise, please leave. Thank you.

One of the coolest scenery buildings I have ever seen !

Since this is for a Haaq table have you considered doing sand dunes with troglodyte habs inside (think Tatoine Star Wars)?

WOW!

Stunning - and lit up too!

Looking forward to watching this thread as you continue to build up that beautiful board!

Now that is the gak. Are you using fiberboard and a lot of patience? I'm assuming there is a solid foundation to help you bend it?

Thanks All.

No to the Tatooine question. I want my Bourak board to be clean and tidy, and Tatoine was a filthy place with all sorts of junk lying around, IIRC (but then, as I also recall, Han shot first.)

Tutorials... Hmmm. I posted WIPs on the Infinity forum, and I could bring those images here. But no, not fiberboard, rather cereal boxes, cracker boxes, cardstock... yeah, junk from my recycling bin.

It might be a while though, I jumped into a terrain building contest here (and started this thread partially because of that.)

That is the most original terrain I've seen! Well done!

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

All right, a tutorial of sorts. This montage shows how to make the curved walls by lamination, which is the basis for this sort of construction.

Fairly simple, just make a form; cut strips and laminate them. Them glue the hex pattern on, tidy up the edges and voila, walls. The same principle is used to make wall sections for larger buildings. The sections are then glue together to get something like this

Which is the large building shown above, but not the NMAI (the first building shown) The next step is to add a roof, and have access to the interior through it. But, it is a but of an obstruction from certain angles. I would do the roof differently, if I were inclined to do it over.

Finally, add in a catwalk for the second floor, so you can play both floors at once.

The gray block in the center of the second floor is just a place holder. I later replaced it with some plexiglass. But for play we generally just leave it out. You can also see some of the walls in the building, so we can re-arrange the interior from game to game. We treat the wall layout as the same for both floors.

Here is a better shot of the walls, and a piece of floor tile used for the first floor. We can set it up on a side table if we need to.

The doors slide open, as seen in this WIP shot/montage

However, being paper they can stick a bit on the revolving doors, but the flat doors work fine.
Here's a shot of the tower interior, and its winding staircase.

It is all about lamination to make the shapes, then glue them together. You end up with a very strong structure. But you need patience. With so much glue used, you have a lot of time to wait while it cures. Too bad I didn't use the time to paint some minis :(

Thanks for stopping by. Now go play some Infinity.

That is absolutely stunning, I don't think too far to say that when you start to see the crossover between model building/painting, and what can really be called 'art'

Out of interest, are you an architectural engineer or something in RL?

Beautiful work though, can't wait to see how this develops!

I agree, this really is art. The laminating part always makes my papercraft stuff warp, though, how do you avoid that?

@ Pacific: No. But I did take a bunch of Mechanical Drawing and Architectural Drawing classes in High School. This was before CAD too, so seriously old school training.
@Hdbbstephen: clamps of all sorts, including several styles of binder clips, spring clamps, etc. Oh, an weights...

Although generally not that much. A little warping is to be expected. You just account for it while building and clean up and correct it before priming.

Thanks for the compliments gents

Anyway, been working on the LoER terrain contest. Here are a few WIP shots of what I'll be entering. As you see, I need to get to painting. And I won't finish the interior, which is a bit of a bummer. But the outside will be cool enough (fingers crossed) The theme was accommodations, where you little metal (or plastic) meeples lay their weary heads for the night. I figured shipping containers, but with a twist. Make 'em hexagons, 'cuz nothing says Infinity like hexagons. There are 3 'hab' modules/containers, 2 HVAC units, a comm array, a couple of planters, a generator, and, a 'comfort station'. Hey, people will still need toilets and showers in the future.

Wish me luck. The competition is tough. Some excellent work. Oh, and there is one minor surprise I plan to include

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

You have some amazing pieces here, really love the layered style of these builds. Also, those water features are great atmospheric touches

I'd suggest starting a thread over in the Dakka P&M Blogs pages to showcase your build process to a wider audience, then use this thread for the final models...

Just the right level of detail, and the plants look just right without being OTT.

Please keep the pics coming

Thanks guys.

Rugland, good idea. I was thinking that I could post the final stuff in the P&M showcase, and the WIPs here, but I like your idea better. Thanks.

Anyway, Here are the first photos of the finished results. The judges requested lots of photos, and since my entry has lots of pieces (Hey, we need lots of terrain in Infinity, no?) So I'm going to put them all, but as I finish them, rather than all at once. This is going to end up being a looooong and picture heavy post. Bear with me, please.

The mini is 31mm high overall, for purposes of scale. Someday I'll finish painting it. The terrain is built from old food packaging-- cereal boxes, cracker boxes etc-- and a few bits from here and there-- Q-tips, wire insulation, some plastic aquarium plants, a couple of clear plastic party plates for the glass. Basically junk. Saves money for tools and minis. Priorities, eh?

So the planters first. We need them for the low visibility zones, and the planter portions can provide some partial cover. Planters make excellent scatter.
Top views:

Front views:

The back of the chevron shaped planter is meant to go against a wall of the hab module, so it is not painted, just primed, and hence, not shown.

Power, always a need. So here is a generator, which serves as another nice piece of scatter.
Top views:

You can see the LED inside the generator. Yes, we like to light up the terrain in Infinity. It is the cheerful brightness of the near future

Front Views:

I did not have time to print any sort of warning signs or anything else that would have added additional character to the generator. Maybe if everything else is done in time, I can go back and try. It's hard to photograph something that is internally lit too :(

Here are the HVAC pieces. All good Hab modules need air conditioning eh?

And here is the Commications Array, so folks can phone home, or something

Here is the Comfort station. It is large enough to house a shower, a few sinks and of course, the toilets. The last photo shows the LED inside. No I was not going to do the interior on this

And finally the Habitat modules themselves

Here is the interior. I ran out of time and could not add the interior stuff to it. The plan was for a few bunks, a table and some benches, and a few cabinets and foot lockers to be used as interior scatter. I did not add LEDs here, because they would get in the way of play. The windows are removable, if it becomes needed, as are the doors. I chose blue doors because when I researched my big building, I noted that a large number of doors in that part of the world were painted blue. So, I paint my Bourak building doors blue.

And here are a bunch of group shots showing the whole thing in action-- as a listening post, or outpost or FOB or research station etc. As you can see, it will be quite playable, and actually looks like a nice enough place for our little metal meeples to lay down their weary heads after a hard day of fighting, or exploring, or whatever... watching cable pirated via the Comm Array

Ruglud asked for a lot of photos, so here they all were. If you want to see them in gallery form, here is the link http://redharvest.imgur.com/ they will be in the LoER Contest Album.

Any pointers on planning this stuff out you think might be useful for someone about to dive in?

No stairs, since I did not have time to finish the interiors. I started 3 weeks after the contest started. Truth is I sort of stumbled across the thread by accident, read the theme and an idea just grabbed hold.

I would use a ladder for the stacked version. At some point I will finish the interior with some scatter bits, and post up thoe photos.

Never saw the star wars old republic or planetside. The modules remind me of the temporary classrooms we had when I was in High School, now that I think about it-- but those were square. Inspiration comes from the strangest sources eh?

As far as pointers go, I think having a good theme helps, since everything can flow from that. Oh, and patience. And lots of glue.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
