Subject: ArbitorIan's TIGER CLAWS - 21st Dec - Speeders, Razorbacks, Librarians done!

Hello! So, some people at my local club want to play the Badab War campaign. I 'd like to play, but the only Marine army I'm planning any time soon is a fancy Heresy-era one, and I'm in the middle of building a massive Renegade & Heretics army.
So, the plan is to use those heretics to play as the Tyrants Legion (yeah, they'll look a bit 'cultisty' but it'll be fine). However, the first few phases of the campaign are marine-only boarding missions, and Tyrants Legion kinda a requires a few Marines, so I'm doing a quick 'bits box' marine force that I can add to my Renegades to turn them into Tyrants Legion. Thankfully, I'm got loads of old bits lying around, and hopefully this will use up all the 2ed stuff I don't want in the Heresy army. I want to get this done fast, and I want it to fit in a half-size KR case at the end.
I settled on TIGER CLAWS. Not only are they a good substitute for Astral Claws in the Tyrants Legion army, they're also suspicious and possibly tainted, so it makes sense that 'their' Tyrants Legion are a bit more chaotic. Also, this colour scheme looks pretty easy to airbrush, which means SPEED.
Here's the table with all my old Marine bits lying around.
And here's the results, built in a day:
First, a Tactical Squad (or Cohort if you're in the Tyrant's Legion), made from some old plastics. Sergeant has a power fist, and there's an old Plasma Cannon and Plasma Gun in there too.
Then, two five-man Retaliator squads, which can go together to make one Siege Assault Squad when playing the boarding missions. The first are made from some Anvil Industried bodies which look pretty void-hardened, and the second lot are made from some old metal assault marines. They'll have the old Void Junkers shields.
My Carnac Commodus, converted from the old Sgt. Centurius character.
A Corpse Taker Apothecary and his two Dissection Servitors. The Corpse Taker used to be Asmodai, and the servitors are a mix of Mantic zombies and flagellants.
And an Iron Hunter bike squad, really assembled from bits. I had to bend some old metal back-banner poles to make additional handlebars and cut down some regular bolters to get them finished!
Since a few of those things can't be used in the Boarding Missions, I went a bit further to make this playable as a SM army. First, a Librarian and Chaplain, armed with plasma weapons for some marine killing.
A five man Terminator squad (and extra sixth heavy) made from 2ed plastics and RT metal terminators.
A Devastator squad, old style, with missile launchers (that could be Flak at a push) - also providing weapon options for my Tacticals.
And finally, two reclaimed RT era Rhinos.
Phew. Forty models and two tanks all assembled in about a day. Time to get undercoating!!

Thanks. They're already on the undercoating table!
Been wondering about the best way to get the faded yellow/black effect actually. My current plan is...
- Big zenithal highlight dark grey - airbrush
- Smaller highlight dark/mid grey - airbrush
- Iyanden darksun for the base of the yellow - airbrush, then paint in should pads
- Mid-yellow highlight - airbrush
- Gold highlight - airbrush.
- Rest of the colours with a regular brush
- Transfers
- Gloss varnish and a brown oil wash.
- Remove excess wash for highlighting.
- Bases
- Matt Varnish
I'm not sure if some sort of brown would be needed before the iyanden darksun, to give it a base colour? The colour in the reference pic looks quite brown, but then it'll get brown shading anyway with the wash...

Well THAT took longer than I thought it would...
The initial spraying of yellow was a bit of nightmare to get the right colour, so I put the army down for a few weeks. Every combination seemed to come out a bit too lime-coloured and not deep and orange enough..
But the Badab campaign is looming, so this weekend, I searched through my whole paint set until I came across Miniature Warning Yellow, which seemed to work fine over the Iyanden. Now they're assembled and base coloured and ready for washing!

Been looking forward to this since you first mentioned it on your (excellent) Chaos thread, and faster than a speeding bullet, job done, a really cool looking Tiger Claws force, excellent work once again. I've noticed you use a lot of metal/plastic hybrid conversions in your armies, something I would like to do in the future, do you pin your models together and if so what diameter of rod/wire do you use?

Boyz "R" Us wrote:I've noticed you use a lot of metal/plastic hybrid conversions in your armies, something I would like to do in the future, do you pin your models together and if so what diameter of rod/wire do you use?
Nothing in this army is pinned yet. I do use pins for difficult (thin) joints or on larger models, in which case I'd use normal paperclips as my 'rod' (so roughly 1mm in diameter). However, all my metal/plastic joins I reinforce with a tiny bit of green stuff pressed into the superglue - partly to fill in any gaps and partly so that I don't have to hold the bits together. Wobbly hands make for poor bonds!!
Boss Salvage wrote:Also, I have to admit some jealousy of that Centurius mini, still longing for my own LotD bald leader of mysterious doom
Aha - yes, my stupid teenage self decided to chop off his Animus Speculum and lose all the extra bits, so he wasn't much use as a REAL Centurius. Nice to get some use out of the model though, and he looks pretty scary as my stand-in Carnac Commodus.

So, I've been building up the second lot ready for another quick spray job. This is really dredging the depths of my bits box - I had to get a few more legs just to make use of all the arms I had spare...
First, some additional Tacticals - another squad.
Then, five Sternguard Vets plasma'd up with some converted combi-plasmas for fighting in the Badab campaign.
Some additional Retaliators so that some of the current ones can switch to real Assault Marines.
And a bunch of Scouts. I had lots of bodies left over from my Arbites Bikers, so used legs from old Warzone minis.
And five Assault Terminators. God knows why I chopped their heads off years ago, but I managed to Insta-mold some replacements.
And finally, an old-school Vindicator. I'll have to find something to replace the piston-plate with.
Some more bits to come, and then I'll start the paint job...

Yeah, I wanted something fast and the new scheme looked like the kind of thing that could be turned out pretty quickly. The old scheme might have taken a bit longer!!!

Thanks - I adopted it for my Chaos army here, and it seems to be holding up well: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/426461.page - airbrushing, only brush-painting the details, and then shading AND highlighting with white spirit and oil washes.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'm hoping that, once painted, nobody will notice their spindly little legs. Anyway, they're meant to be teenagers, right? And teenagers all have weirdly shaped bodies anyway...

UPDATES! I'm finally going to try and get this batch done this week so that army is finished and my Badab campaign can continue without having to worry about building more stuff! Here's the vindicator, with it's pistons replaced by an old Leman Russ engine part. Still have to do some filling with Milliput, but otherwise complete. And some dreadnoughts! I have three more complete RT dreads planned for a GK army, so these are basically all the spare parts, with some press-molded replacement sides and some plasma cannon mounts made of Sentinel cannons and some Zinge industries bits and bobs I picked up at Salute. Now, to milliput, drill the barrels and prime!

-- TRANSMISSION BEGINS --
Unknown Astartes bearing the badges of the eradicated Tiger Claws chapter - thought lost to the warp millennia since - staged an audacious attack on Loyalist forces from the Star Phantoms chapter.
The initial boarding action by the Tiger Claws succeeded in destroying some key systems but valiant assault action by the Star Phantoms forced the Tiger Claws forces to a stalemate.
However, the Tiger Claws consolidated in the outer deck levels and the Star Phantoms found their own deck layout working against them as they attempted to dislodge the embedded attackers.
Contact was lost shortly afterwards.

And the second batch (and almost FINAL batch) is done - one army that should last me the next year's Badab campaign. Tactical Squad B (really built from any old bits I could find!) Assault Squad - some of which used to be the Retaliators Retaliators - some reinforcements to replace those lost to the Assault Squad Assault Terminators - featuring Terminators of all ages! Sternguard Vets - built from BA and Techmarine parts, and armed with ALL THE PLASMA Scouts - with those spindly Warzone legs. One bolter squad with heavy options and a small sniper squad And finally, DREADS! Two old ball dreadnoughts with plasma cannons. One tall and one short. Should finish the Apothecary and the Vindicator tomorrow..
