Subject: Khorne Legions of Chaos project log

I am starting a new Legions of Chaos as my first fantasy army (that's not counting the undead i had when i was 10 ).
I will try to update as often as possible and post as many WIP pics as i can.
So... I recently acquired a decent core to my army which is as follows:
1 Chaos Lord on horse (needs a bit of work as was already built)
11 Chaos Knights (1 built, again needs tweaking...)
24 Chaos Warriors
10 Bloodletters
2 Chaos chariots
3 skullcrushers
which, when added to my existing 30 Gors with Great Bray Shaman and 10 Bestigors, will give me a very solid start i think
the Chariot champion type guy is getting converted into a Sorcerer cos i was playing about with different heads and it just kind of happened, are they any good in chariots? im guessing they would have to be decent in combat unless they could be used as a mobile spell platform? is that viable? i don't know...
there will be much kitbashing as ive got quite a few space wolf heads left over and they look awesome on the knights plus i want my army to look a bit more wild and blood drunk lol
I'm going for a fully Khornate army (in appearance at least) because i love the look of all the Khorne stuff but none of the other chaos stuff really grabs me. plus i think it will be easier as a project to have a simple theme which is something I've never done before I tend to be a bit here and there sometimes
I quite like the chimera, and the skullcannon but not sure how well they play although iv read good things about the skull cannon
also planning on some ungor raiders for some ranged attacks (being a 40k player mainly i hate the thought of no ranged weapons) some more bestigors, another big unit of warriors or gors, a soulgrinder (will do for my CSM too) skullcrushers (OBViously), more daemons, hounds, a doombull, another chariot, bla bla you get the picture
Any thoughts, comments critique etc are most welcome, I'll leave you with a WIP shot of my tester Warrior after his 1st wash...

Done a bit more painting on my test warrior tonight starting to build him up a bit. Happy with the general colour scheme, might mix it around between units to give them all their own unique flavour. Decided to use the chariot guy as my BSB using the skullcrushers standard, nice and Khorney.
Here's a few more shots of my ( rough) tester
Any feedback would be good and most welcome

Sounds like you got quite the core block of an army. Knights, Warriors and chariots are all things I include on a regular basis. Not sure on what a Sorcerer on a chariot could do, but I recklessly throw my chariots into blocks of infantry, so who knows what happens if you play things right Chimeras play well (when they dont die turn 1 from a cannon ball) - not sure on the skullcannon as I dont have one. If you're looking for shooty stuff, flamers might fill the void. d6 S4 attacks at 18" per flamer, with a unit min-max of 3-6. But personally, I've gotten used to no shooting...
Anyway, painting related, your test model looks good. A wholey khorne army would definately look cool. How are you going to base them? Snow would be cool. Red and while would be quite striking on the TT.
( BTW, the pictures in your first post are miles better than those in the second post).
Looking forward to more

thanks! yes i know about the pics i'm gonna redo them i think the 2nd lot were taken at a friends on the quick gonna base with light brown dirt and cracked mud with a hint of scorched grass, when you say flamers do you mean the tzeentch daemons? are they template attacks? and can you summon daemons in fantasy? (dont have the army book might try and hold out til 9th ) did my BSB tonight quite happy with the results thanks again for the feed back!

Well that's a suitably awesome model for your BSB! And to clarify; they are flame templates in 40k. But in Fantasy they're d6 shots each.

done a bit more tonight first up made the musician to fit next to BSB then started to paint the BSB but he didn't really go to plan, the plan was to do him all red armour but it just looked a bit flat so i did a couple of metal bits but that didnt look quite right to me either so i gave him a wash and ill revisit him later with a fresh head next up to build is the champion, when he is built ill paint the 4 existing models then batch build/paint 4 at a time for the rank and file i've realised that my main aim with this unit is to try and coax a little bit of life out of the warriors kit by rotating on their bases slightly and turning heads etc just subtle changes which i hope will make them look a bit more animated. Oh and they WILL end up covered in blood (for the blood god). another thing, this unit will be a mostly horn free zone because when i was looking through the heads and trying different ones onto the bodies all i could think about was this: http://luminescencias.blogspot.co.uk/uploaded_images/Arthur-and-Bedevere-and-the-Knights-of-Ni-715052.jpg then i found this http://www.retroist.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/knights-say-ni.jpg which is awesome but not what i want my bloodthirsty warriors to look like

You lord looks ok.
It might be the lighting in the pictures but the red looks really bright. even after the wash. I think that it doesn't look quite right because it's too bright, and when you highlight it, it'll be even brighter. I think, if you take it down a shade of red, then highlight this shade of red, it'd look great.
But dont worry too much, you have 24 warriors to trial schemes on
4 per batch seems reasonable. I did 3/batch for a while, but i felt it was taking too long, so upped it to 9 to get the last 9 done - never again Way too much!

The hero already has his first lot of highlights
Base of khorne red
Heavy drybrush mephiston red
Light drybrush evil sun scarlet
I've found if I do my highlights after wash they too bright whereas I like how a wash tones them down.
Also just looked now and he darker than pic it must have been the light last night

Nice one thanks! It's something I've been meaning to do for ages and I liked the thought of a khorne army with elements from the 3 chaos ' factions' ( for want of a better word) and then the rules for the legion came out in glottkin and made me a happy boy! I think I'll wait to see if they do a combined chaos army book this summer as I would rather spend my 30 plus quid on that than the glottkin book.

Got my command group built tonight with most of their basecoats done, tweaked the hero slightly much happier with the result.
Tried a different order for the basecoats amp before when I highlighted the red it went over onto the metal so this time they got a black undercoat then the red areas were done and highlighted before the metal, this worked much better for me. Getting an idea now me how the unit will look as a whole
Any thoughts? Feedback?

Quite a productive evening, got all the command group and the tester to more or less the same stage now. they've all had a wash so just touching up now and final highlights and details.
toying with the idea of painting the bases red/orange so that when i paint the Agrellan earth on top the cracks show the colour underneath. seen it done somewhere i think...
also made a bit more effort with my pics tonight
anyhoo hope people are still reading this...

Maybe add a bit of gold, or even bone colour on the trinkets? I feel they need a bit of colour.
They still look great though, subd!

Thanks! the trinket will end up almost white, i wanted it to be made from stone Not sure about gold, don't have one anyway. The cloaks will get a final two highlights with administratum grey then white scar. The weapons' handles and the horn etc will get a highlight with terminatus stone (they had one before the wash but nuln oil killed the highlight). I think the bases might end up quite light so that might help.

I know this isn't a fantasy model, but see how a brass-ish colour has been used on the details? Maybe it would work on your as well.
But they're your models, im just saying what I think would look nice

Don't forget there aren't finished :-)
Awesome picture! Only trouble is with the warriors there's no trim. You're right about the need for spot colours and that's tonight's job, I'll be posting pictures late this evening.
I've been thinking about the shield colour and with feedback in mind I might go for a light grey with red chaos stars. The blood will show up nicely on those as well.

Thanks! The silver is dark cos of the wash, it'll get a bit of necron compound to brighten it up a bit Automatically Appended Next Post: No pics tonight I'm afraid didn't get much done cos my partner in ( chaos) crime was round we just ended up gassing :-S
Managed to get a few highlights done tho. Hooray!

built my next 4 warriors ready for when I finish painting the command group so I can just get straight into painting them. Been toying with the idea of having my front rank mostly bare headed to represent veterans getting pride of place (and the pick of the skulls!) in the front rank.
