I for one love the look of fantasy models on round bases and am in the process of changing over the few minis I own for AOS (I had only collected a few as I was always a 40k player and didn't want to spend a ton to invest in fantasy). I always use forums for painting and modelling for inspiration, but have noticed that there are very few project logs for either fantasy or AOS. I figured I'd start a thread for those who have rebased their fantasy models, or have painted any new endtimes or AOS models.
Lets see your minis!

Well I have around 200 goblins and 300+ WoC....let me think about this lol.
Plus I plan on staying with 8th until they sort the rules out for AoS. I for one love the infantry blocks.

Rebasing is a bad choice in all regards. With square bases, you can easily use the miniatures in other games such as KoW. Rebasing to square means less compatibility, a high monetary effort and a lot of time spent on not gaining anything.

Actually I've got a load of nurgle stuff awaiting assembly onto round bases, it just takes time to get up and running. Plus I've been a bit distracted by the khorne stuff in the aos starter.
I'm seen a few blog posts pop up with new stuff on rounds bases here and there, but it will take time for all the painted stuff to filter through.

I'm in the process of re-basing a High Elves army. I'm also a huge fan of the round bases and think they make for a nicer looking army.
I respect players who don't think it's worth the effort, but it's important to remember that different people get different things out of this hobby. For me, re-basing a couple hundred models represents hours and hours of relaxing hobby time with my friends. For others, it represents a terrible waste of time. Different strokes for different folks.
I just wish the new small ovals were easier to get your hands on and cheaper. Automatically Appended Next Post: Sigvatr wrote:Rebasing is a bad choice in all regards. It's not a bad choice for me. I hated 8th. I hated Kings of War. Besides, round bases can EASILY be put onto movement trays and ranked up. For me, and people like me, it's the best choice.

You haven't given a reason why. You spend a good amount of money and time because...?
Even besides compatibility issues, they also are harder to store than regular bases.

I'm starting a new death army all on round and rebasing my order army to round too.
I'll start one of my glorious plogs as soon as the first model is fully painted :-)

There's absolutely no reason why you can't use rounds for KOW. So long as the unit footprint is correct you could use rounds, squares, no bases at all!
It's not exactly for AoS as I've been doing Fantasy on rounds for ages, but here's a few. Round bases are just so much better for showing off the minis!

Easy... I enjoy the hobby aspects as much as I enjoy playing the game. I'm not particularly worried about the money. Re-basing 200+ models takes time. Even with factoring in the cost, it's about the cheapest form of entertainment I can think of. I chit chat with friends or watch TV with the wife while I do this. It's a relaxing, social activity. I re-based 57 models over the weekend.
I'm also not sure how you're storing your models, but I see no difference in storing a 25mm circle versus a 25mm square. They both fit in the same space.

I can definitely see both sides in this argument - a lot of us think the fantasy miniatures look great in skirmish mode on round bases, but if I had a huge painted army with movements trays and the works, you could never get me to rebase. As it is, for my small Night Goblin horde, I think they'll stay square based, while new miniatures and projects will get the fancier round stuff.
It's worth mentioning, should one wish to go round base and still rank up the minis, that the Tablewar magnetic trays are perfect for this purpose: http://www.tablewar.com/unit-trays/

even if I wanted to play AoS, which I don't, AoS doesn't require or even give an advantage to round bases.
Bases are absolutely meaningless in AoS. It seems rather foolish to me to rebase troops from square (which are useful in any number of games) to round (which aren't even useful for THIS game).

Honestly given how distance is measured in AoS, it's best to use the smallest base that can support the models for them. That way you will spend less time stacking a base on top another.

Circle bases vastly improve the playability of mosh-pit melees. The corners of square bases really get in the way.

Well, at least with my orcs its the miniatures themselves that would cause a problem for a mosh pit, rather than the base. I can barely get them to rank up in the movement trays!
Are people playing AoS with movement trays? I can't imagine trying to play WFB without them. Moving so many, many, many little dudes. . .
But then I guess 40k has the same problems, and most of the new AoS players seem to be coming from that based on comments. So they just must not mind.

I play with under half the models I used to in 8th. So it's not to bad.
For AoS under 50 models plays best.

I'll be re-basing a couple of my Skaven (most notably, my Warlord who just falls over all the time), but that's about it.
Going back and revisiting completed models, ripping them off a perfectly good base and putting them on a newer, larger base just doesn't appeal to me. I'd almost just rather buy a whole new model.
The other issue I have is that bases don't matter, and "stacking" models on a base are "rules acceptable" for melee range. I tend to spend some extra time on the bases of some models, and the idea that my opponent can just stack models onto my base just to get into melee range?
Of course, you and your opponent can just say "measure from the base", but that's not really the rules (such as they are ).

The whole "round bases look better" argument has never worked for me. To my eye, the round based battles in 40k just looked like a jumbled up mess. Ranked up blocks look impressive, and they work the best with squares. Different tastes, I guess.
So no rebasing for me.

Rebased my whole Undead army (~200 minis). Didn't play WHFB in 12 years and probably never will again, but AoS is a fun and quick game (with house rules). For me at least.

Edlowe - that tutorial is pretty damn good!
Been wanting to rebase a few models but have not done so as they are rather delicate.
However, my daemons are 40k anyway so no issues there.
Might push them onto the new 32mm though as you get more room to tinker with the base.

That's a really awesome tutorial.
I still don't have the wherewithal to re base over 35k worth of armies, but its a really cool and easy way for people that want to rebase without the headache and paint destroying nature of ripping the base off.
