I bought the Tyranid Limited Edition codex. I was thinking, "I paid twice as much for a different cover and a what ever number out of a 1000?" At leas it wasn't a piece of paper saying that.

With all the limited editions being sold out within 5 minuets of release, I am surprised after a few hours that it's still available in Canada. I missed out on the Dark Angles Limited edition and I was refreshing every minute. So maybe GW finally hit the price limit that we will not accept.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

I returned to the game at the beginning of 6th. They have done this (or less!) for every single limited edition book since then.

And yet, somehow, people are still surprised; and some people even get excited!

This hobby is bewildering to me...

with print runs as small as they are, they can probably always sell out of them, that's basically one book for every major metro area of the UK, US and Europe. There will always be *that* guy somewhere.

It's still no less shocking to see how much extra can be charged for some paper and some coins.

Hey making your own sculpts is artistic and fun.

Plus you get to attend a lot of life drawing/sculpting classes.

Saving money is cool, maybe you can homebrew a codex too.

I picked one up. But, then again I didn't have any prior Tau Empires stuff. It might have been different if I already had previous books.

I wonder what number I'll get!

Apparently people really liked those printed coins. Guess they don't realize that the books are worth nothing and are going to be obsolete in 2 years or less.

I'm one of the suckers who sprung for Codex: Dark Angels: Reclusiam Edition. I have to say, although the price was way above and beyond what I should have done, I do like the metal objective markers and the nicely printed Cypher dataslate, plus its nice having something very few other players have. It usually turns a few heads at my FLGS (the metal markers especially). As cool as they are, I will never buy another special codex, as there are far better things to do with my money (like more models ).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 48 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

I was thinking of selling my few tau units...

Well I saw this and caved. I too am a collector of limited stuff, especially if it is shiny. The cover art and colors are much cooler, black page edges, those awesome objective markers, and I don't have to buy data cards!

Damn it is expensive though. I seem to limp for a couple days after gw opens up preorders like this...

Being obsolete in one to two years isn't a problem with any product, even a limited edition one. The issue comes with how much more that limited edition price tag costs, and how people get almost nothing for it.

I mean really, limited edition product usually exists to either support the main company, or the FLGS that sell their product. Though I hear time and time again how GW is scum when it comes to business practices, and I've seen some of it myself, so seeing people support them with this is just disgusting. The very least GW could have done was used these to support FLGS, but they didn't.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I really wanted the map, honestly, but instead of spending almost $200 on a map I opted instead to buy three boxes of crisis suits from my local store, so...

I honestly think GW would make more money in the long run if they made cool stuff like that and just sold it regularly. Posters, tokens, custom dice, t-shirts, key chains, etc. Oh well.

I actually did buy my copy through my LGS. They have been able to get all the limited stuff for me.

I wish they would do it as well, but from my understanding the reason they don't make it a "regular" item is that it's made by a third party and it would be rather expensive to keep doing it rather than the one-off methods they do now.

The U.S. webstore sold out last night, to make a grand total of about 10 hours after release for them all to be snatched up. I think Britain sold out first by a long shot. But, they do have a time zone advantage.

Of course, that isn't to say a chunk of the boxes weren't picked up by resellers. I fully expect to see Ghostkeel boxes on Ebay for $300 in the next couple days. It might still be possible to get one if you really go hunting!

I would actually be surprised, considering they were limited 1 per order, same with the Raven Guard/White Scars datacards.

So while I respect that, and Tau was also the army I chose after coming back from a ten year break a few months ago, I just still can't see any justification for purchasing the limited edition codex.

Like if this was a product they sold at the cost of a regular Codex to FLGSs, and then allowed FLGSs to sell it at the stupidly marked up price, as a way to support those who carry their product in even a minor way after how they tried to kill them with their own GW stores, I'd be completely on board. When they themselves use it to basically swindle their costumers, for their own gain alone, I can't get behind it.

Do what? The "limited edition product" that's sold at cost to FLGSs specifically, and not big box stores, in order to reward them for selling their product?

Yea, Wizards of the Coast does that with their "From the Vault: ____ " product, which a premium product only sold to FLGSs at cost of any normal product (their MSRP is actually 35$, so whole sale to an FLGS is probably half of that or less), and then it's sold for like 100$+ to costumers. It's just one of their many programs to support small size retailers for carrying and supporting their product. Like there's a reason MtG is as massive as it is.

Thanks for the info. WotC must be unique in that. It's a very admirable move by them too. I wouldn't hold it against GW for not doing the same, but it would also be a move worthy of admiration if they did.
